No specific amount need be applied, but a clean cut 5 or under keeps things nice and spiffy.

Please keep the Arrested Development inclusions to a minimum.

First and foremost: Star Trek Enterprise

I've been watching the subsequent 4 episodes every monday on the Sci-Fi channel and I've come to realize just how cool this series was. For once, we had a relatable Star Trek cast that wasn't trying to preach about enlightenment and peace-mongering. Granted they went a wee bit too far with the time-travel, but everything else about it makes that easily overlooked. This series ties with DS9 as my favorite Star Trek (admittedly, DS9 would probably still be better if it weren't for the Sisko=Prophet storyline at the end).

Unfortunately, I imagine that even if I did get into this series from the start that it would have still been sabotaged by UPN's non-Sci-Fi status. This, when combined with the Trekkies harping on and on about timeline infringement, totally destroys a great series. If this had started out on the Sci-Fi Channel, it probably would have survived.

Second: This Just In

If you can't tell from the avatar, I was obsessed with this show. Not only because it didn't portray conservatives as the usual uptight zealous war-mongering types that Nip/Tuck would have you believe exist en masse, but also because of its absolute status as an anti-social element to, literally, everything around it. The main character may have been a conservative, but within the few episodes the show got to air, it threw slews of venom in every direction it could. Absolutely no one in Hollywood, punditry, or politics was safe from this show--Hell, even Brian Newport, the main character, proved himself to be as self-depricating as Al Bundy. It was South Park with a dry-wit instead of exaggerated toilet humor parodies. There was no moral to the story because the scenarios that played out were the implementation of said morals to begin with. On top of this, you had arguments between the politically dynamic characters within the show. And, amazingly enough, even the ones on the left were likeable.

I think the show could have stood a chance. The only problem it had was a bad time-slot and an animated fanbase (that is to say, people who liked animated shows) that didn't care for humor that had a conservative POV.

Third: Duckman

When I first saw it on the USA in like....95? I thought that the animation was a little too abstractly caricatured and messy for my visual comfort. Two years later I catch it again and I actually start to listen to it and I can't keep myself from laughing (unfortunately, that was the same year the series ended). As I said, the written humor was wonderful and implemented, like This Just In, more self-deprication as well as sarcastic humor that wasn't so overused ala Colbert Report. And it had some of the best voice work ever; Jason Alexander, Nancy Travis, Tim Curry, Ben Stein, and Gregg Berger were all excellent.

The series had a good run that was relatively long for one of its caliber, but I still think more good writing could have been squeezed out of it. Four seasons and it was still fresh.

Fourth: Alien Nation

At times, this show got pretty annoying. This is primarily because the show didn't stick to the movie's formula with George's Naivate'(sp) and Matt's bigotry. Time and again, the script kept coming back to the word that they actually succeeded in making sound annoying: "Mating." However, in spite of all this, the concept was really cool and the story implications were through the roof. All in all it had a lot of potential and was pretty cute--Watching them integrate as a society was both hilarious and interesting.

I can't remember why his one stopped, but it did have a shitload of movies.

Fifth: Dilbert

Another victim of UPN's obscure niche in basic cable network. Me, my brother, and my dad always enjoyed watching this show; we could all tell that the writers had actually experienced cube-life, the stress of synergy, and the idiocy perpetrated by a company's inability to attune itself to consumer sensitivity. It's satire was some of the best I'd ever seen--And with more room to expand context outside of of the 8 boxes in the Sunday newspaper, it was much more layered and funny. Portraying every Office archetype, it was some of the best reflective writing I got to experience.

Damn you UPN!

P.S. If I weren't so sure it would be brought back eventually, I'd include Big O in that list.

This sums up my feelings about Enterprise. I have been taping the show for several months, and I love it more with each episode I watch.

I only watched it sporadically when it was on during 2001 - 2005.

Now, it has become a show that I am passionate about viewing.

Jesus monkey-fucking Christ, I agree with Pariah. Enterprise was a damn good show. It had it's bad episodes, but so does all Trek. I still say, give it five or ten more years, that Enterprise will gain a fan following who could finally appreciate it just as the original Trek did.

Aside from ATHF, this is one of the only other Adult Swim-born counter culture shows that I actually got into. It was satirical in its own way by using the graynie 80s cartoon backdrop and using the open-ended mouth movements to craft these hilarious situations. When they stopped showing this, ATHF just wasn't enough anymore to keep me watching Adult Swim with any sort of regularity.

I honestly cannot figure out why it failed. It's material was miles ahead of the...'Mouse show' writing and even a lot of the ATHF schtick.

It didn't fail. The creators ended it because they thought, and rightly so, that they were losing their edge and that the funny was slowly slipping away. They did a series this past year on Adult Swim called Frisky Dingo that's just as funny. Check it out if you haven't already.

  • The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Bruce Campbell in what was essentially the 90's version of Wild Wild West. Damn entertaining, and Billy Drago was a perfect villain.
  • The Flash - Not perfect, but a damn good attempt at a live-action superhero show in the 90's. CBS fucked them over by shifting them from night to night and not letting fans know where to find it. My favorite part of the show was the overall stylization of it. I mean, there were fucking murals everywhere, even in people's homes. Weird, but it let you get more into a comic book mentality.
  • Newsradio - Funny, witty, and had a great cast. It wasn't the same after Hartman was killed, but at least they didn't try and make Lovette copy Hartman. The Titanic episode was one of my favorites.
  • Mr. Show starring Bob and David - Bob Odenkirk and David Cross had created the best, satirical, and all out in-your-face sketch comedy show ever put on American TV. They pulled no punches and played with the concepts of skit comedy and all media. They fully understood everything that they made funny of. And they, as well, were able to pull together funny, brilliant players to appear with them.
  • Anything with Garry Shandling - The dude's fucking brilliant. Give him a show, damnit! Any show!

Hell, CBS fucked them over from day one. Didn't they originally air it opposite "Cosby" and "the Simpsons"?

It might have at one point. Maybe they moved it to Fridays after it got slaughtered by Cos and Bart? Of course, THAT would have put it up against the then-popular "TGIF" lineup, wouldn't it?

I agree. I think Enterprise worked on the same level DS9 worked. It was a cast of different characters with different point of views trying to be better than they were, trying to improve themselves and learn about the universe. The other trek series always bugged me because of the perfection of the characters and how preachy they could be. I take a moral lesson better when the characters say war is bad because they just fought through a war and had to make to difficult choices with no magic perfect solution button.

I really liked Alien nation, it was a good fresh take on racism and living together. It was cancelled because Fox was still very young and the ratings weren't enough to sustain it.

My picks would be:
Arrested Development
Stargate (not sure why Sci-fi cancelled it, the ratings were good and the fans were happy, even the studio is paying to continue it as DTV movies because it's still a bankable franchise).
Sliders (if done right this show could be the best on tv like in it's first 2 years).
The Flash (I always liked it, it was a good solid superhero show that was fun).
Dini/Timm Batman or DCAU (they did a great job of mining the DCU and making it interesting for adults and fun for kids).

I agree on The Flash.
Especially to see Hammill as The Trixter again (they shoulda got him to play the Riddler rather than that cunt Carrey).

I also agree with two cunts in this thread, but for different reasons.
I agree with Snarf about Angel, but only cause I agree with G-Man about hating a cliff hanger ending!
Dunno if I want a whole new series, but I at least want a special that ties up all the loose ends (and no, a comic book is not adequate Whedon you cunt).

Sci-Fi seems to have a habit of canceling their high rating series to try and cash in on a current trend. Especially if Ben Browder and Claudia Black are in the cast.

They should have never canceled JLU. They had just figured out how to do it right. But DC and WB wants to go on this kick of restarting all their animated franchises bullshit.

A show I really enjoyed was Denis Leary's "the Job," a half hour dramedy on ABC about a drunken cop with relationship issues. Granted, he more or less remade the show as "Rescue Me," by recasting the lead as a fireman instead of a police officer, but I would have been just as happy, if not happier, if Leary had just moved "the Job" over to FX in the first place.
