The official X3 website is reporting that Joss Whedon may write and direct X3. Production start time of 2005.

I lost hope when Singer left.

well, I'm enjoying Astonishing X-Men, but I really do wish that Singer and Hayter were working on this. It could be worse, we could have McG directing it.

Well.....at least I enjoyed the first two....

The fact that he's in consideration is enough to doom this movie for me. I don't like Wheadon's work. Never have. The closest I got was the Buffy movie, which was turned up on it's ear by the director and producer and 100x's better than the TV show.
Posted By: Jim Jackson Re: Astonishing X3? - 2004-08-31 10:25 PM
I can only attest to loving his Astonishing X-Men. Other than that, I can't speak to his work. My youngest kid likes BUFFY. So I don't know. But clearly, I'll go see the film, whoever helms it.

Am I the only person who likes Joss Whedon's non-comic work?

I loved Firefly when I saw it on DVD. Thought it was great. Loved the characters and their interactions. (If anyone tries to childishly compare it to that Outlaw Star anime, I will punch you. In the groin.) Can't wait to see the movie.

I also enjoy Buffy the Vampire Slayer (not the movie, though. My, is it bad).

Angel is... okay. I haven't seen the full series, but I've enjoyed the bits that I've seen, I guess.

And he's currently writing X-Men. Why would the movie version (which features many of the same characters) suddenly be terrible if suddenly he's writing/directing it?

No. I loved Firefly, enjoyed Buffy a lot, and even liked Angel. You're not the only one.

Plus, I think he has a great grasp of the characters he's working on now. If anyone can make a non-Wolverine centered X-Men movie work, I think it's him.

Joss Whedon???!!

Why not get Joel Shumacher on it while they're at it?

Whedon's "ideas" are either laughable, or, stolen outright. He's a hack living off shallow work, and questionable skill.

In his first issue, Wolverine and Cyclops fight. Oh, and they put their costumes back on. Oh, and he brings back Kitty Pryde (because YOU demanded it!).

Wow! How original and imaginative!

The Astonishing X3.....I can see it now....

"What do want....yellow spandex?"

"Well...yes, please...."

"Oh, okay....here you go...."

Superman IV: The Quest for a Script, Batman & Robin, and, now, X3. It's a shame. The first two were ground-breaking.

Oh, well. There's always Superman!

Comparing it to Cowboy Bebop is a bit of a stretch. At this point you could say everyone is ripping off Star Trek and Robotech.

It's actually closer to Outlaw Star in terms of VERY general plot. This group comes across a mysterious package (a naked girl in a suitcase), then they go into space. Hijinx ensues. I believe Outlaw Star involves the search for the "Galactic Leyline," the holy grail of holy grails or something. Firefly, on the other hand, is similar to Cowboy Bebop in terms of execution. You have a bunch of standalone stories that simultaneously flesh out the plot and characters as time goes on.

The difference: Firefly is good. Outlaw Star is essentially your usual silver city hover craft future with some space pirates and obligatory cat-girls thrown in for good measure. Firely uses the Old West as a model for the future, with such unexplained oddities as Chinese phrases being a part of the spoken language and what-not.

What was Gene Starwind anyway? Just some dude that dreamed of going into space, so he does once he gets the chance. Meanwhile, Mal is a veteran from the losing side of a intergalactic civil war living under the radar of an oppressive government.

I think hearing nothing but "Firefly rips off Outlaw Star because it has a girl in the box" from little shit anime fans has gotten to me. As a result, if I ever get something made, a naked girl in a box will be the first fucking thing we will see.

I'm saying the way the conflict of the show is introduced is similar. Girl in a box results in the finders of the girl being chased by the "owners" of the girl. Otherwise, the execution is as different as the quality.

I think to shout "rip-off!" is a childish thing to do, especially when your only source is a naked girl in a suitcase.

Or, perhaps, we have tastes based on our personal opinions?

For example, I like things that are new, and original. Thus, my personal opinion is that I don't like seeing the X-Men trotted out in yet ANOTHER round of spandex and 'soopervillians'.

It takes all kinds, Piggy. Nothing snobby about having likes and dislikes....
