Aronofsky Ankles Watchmen
Director needed for comic book pic.

November 03, 2004 - Ain't It Cool News breaks the dispiriting news that director Darren Aronofsky has ankled Paramount Pictures' big-screen adaptation of Watchmen. The Requiem for a Dream filmmaker was long attached to helm the development hell-plagued feature adaptation of the classic Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons graphic novel.

The site claims that "the reason (Aronofsky) left involves timing issues. See, The Fountain is about to start principal photography. We're talking about a matter of days here. And I love The Fountain as a project. Paramount just couldn't wait, though. They want to have Watchmen in a theater by the summer of '06, no matter what. That means they need a filmmaker who can be ready to shoot long before Aronofsky would be ready. So the hunt is on."

AICN adds that the cast Aronofsky was mulling would have been "glorious." Past reports had Simon Pegg and John Cusack up for Rorschach and Nite Owl, respectively. There's no word yet on if David Hayter's script has also been jettisoned.

I wasn't sure what the term "ankles" meant here, heh.

Aronofsky represented the one, tiny, almost minute bit of hope I had for this being successful. I didn't want this to happen before, and I certainly don't want this to happen now.

I think I kinda agree with you, Ani. Without Aronofsky, this project will go nowhere fast, methinks...

I'm not sure that it's official yet.

I think Danny Boyle should direct the film.

Have to go with Whomod here. Grimm and I have discussed at great lengths the idea of putting Watchmen on HBO as a miniseries. If that were to happen, you could sit back and watch the Emmy's role in.....
Posted By: Disco Steve Re: Aronofsky Ankles Watchmen - 2004-11-07 12:51 AM
I think it's completely and utterly possible to do a decent Watchmen film in like three hours (two hours? What kind of worthwhile film is two hours these days?). It would not encompass everything that happened in the series (nor should it), but I think it's very possible.

Years ago he posted at the DC Boreds, before they became incredibly gay.

Due to popular demand...
SEVEN REASONS WHY I HAVE QUIT THE ROB KAMPHAUSEN MESSAGE BOARDS

1. The Comic Book Forum, which gradually became the only place worth visiting to me, had become an uninteresting sludgehole where people preferred to take part in the same repetitive banter that makes the entire board a huge self-referential inside joke rather than actually discuss things aside from how modern comics suck and all the creators are betraying pointless shit that happened decades ago.

2. The entire board is one big, stale self-referential inside joke.

3. MisterJLA, The G-Man, rex, and Wannabuyamonkey. They're ignorant, jingoistic parodies of themselves. A doodle of a Chinese man with bright yellow skin, 2334293084 children, an indecipherable accent, and a masturbatory love for Chairman Mao is less of a stereotype than these people. I refuse to share a common space with such wastes of sperm and egg. I've realized I don't hate republicans or Bush supporters. I just hate fucking assholes like them. Even people who should be agreeing with them can't because they're shitheads.

4. I've realized I have better things to do with my precious time than post on a message board. Like writing. Or homework. Or reading. Or looking at manga porn. Or, y'know, having a life.

5. I talk to most of the people I like from the boards on IM, with the exception of a few, like Dave.

6. I've found that I don't fit in with most of the people on the boards and merely just intervened in conversations to call everyone morons for their stupid, stupid opinions. Or to accuse others of Nazism.

7. I'm Disco Steve, the guy who's only known for saying "Heh" a lot because he has nothing worthwhile to say. Good riddance, I think. Off to new ventures, without being known for monosyllabic sarcastic-sounding laughter.

The End.

damn guys, im impressed......

Yeah. I cant's stands thems college types either. What with their book learnin' and all.

I'm sure you realize there is this stereotype of conservatives as being anti-intellectualism.

So you do realize you're proving his point, don't you?

And since I was yet again referenced by JLA, I think I mentioned I was having fun with you guys on that other board that day. Why is it that if one of you "fucktards" has a bit of fun it's just having a bit of fun. Yet If I start insulting you guys, I'm having a "meltdown"?

When the DC boards went to that crappy format, Rob was busy inviting people here in the promise of this being some sort of better alternative to the new format. A refuge if you will. But of course this was and always has been a NB hangout where bsams jokes are actually funny to people, it's supposed to be charming to see you guys respond to each others jokes (sometimes your own jokes) in your 20 ID's, and the type of right-wing intolerance someone else pointed out on that other thread, rules the day. And woe to anyone who disagrees or doesn't bend to your wills. Old (NB)boys club. But hey, I'm here so I obviously still get some entertainment value out of being here. Still, it all does get old and tiresome sometimes.

Just keep in mind, he and others in that other thread made good points. And I can't fault his descision. You managed to succesfully drive away yet another good classic DC boards poster.

Of course though, you're predictably just gonna cover your ears and sing "Lalalalala" whilst insulting him.

"He's wrong, I'm right. I WIN!!"

Yeah, you guys "won" all right.

Numbnuts.

Now just continue your back slappings and insults directed at Disco Steve. Dismiss him as an intellectual asshole. Just keep in mind, he undoubtedly had more to offer this place than the usual repetitive sophmoric bullshit some of us here have to offer.

Uh oh, I questioned the infallible correctness of your views and opinions.

Its not the book learning that bothers me, its the students that believe the crap that their instructors force feed them. Its the ones that cannot think for themselves and when you call them on it they get defensive and can't back up their views. I think a great example of that is was in the Jonathan Brandis thread where Jim Jackson was defending a child molester. His view was that because he was a great musician and did so much for society, that we should let him go. Its the same excuse that people use for Micheal Jackson.

I usually don't give away many personal details on the Internet (I have plenty of stalkers as it is, putting more information out there can't be a great idea) but I will let you know that I do have a degree.

The fact that I have a degree doesn't blind me to the truth that the vast majority of kids in college are complete dumbfucks, either concerned with mimicking their professors, or partying. Thankfully that wasn’t me: I did well with my major, but with most of the brainwashing prerequisites I just made it through.

Am I an “anti-intellectual”? No. I did take some courses that worth my while, and they had real value to me. Am I anti-pseudo-intellectual? You bet. Found this blurb on Hollywood Reporter as being posted a couple weeks after the announcement of Aronofsky's leaving the project.

Quote:

Nov. 22, 2004
Greengrass, Par on Watchmen

Paul Greengrass, who directed "The Bourne Supremacy," is going to direct "The Watchmen" for Paramount Pictures. The project is based on the seminal DC Comics limited series of the same name, created by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbon and originally released in 1986 as a 12-issue comic book. Darren Aronofsky had been attached to direct but bowed out because of scheduling conflicts. Aronofsky is shooting "The Fountain," starring Hugh Jackson. David Hayter has written the screenplay for "The Watchmen," which Paramount was eager to put into production. With Greengrass aboard, the project is now eyeing a possible 2006 release date. (Borys Kit and Liza Foreman)

I've not seen The Bourne Supremacy yet... or any of the other films this guy has directed, for that matter. Anyone who's seen anything of his care to enlighten me as to what his style/ability is? Do you think he can pull this off?

I dunno, Disco Steve's absense? Your delusions of grandeur made known??

You win.

As if anyone gives a fuck. Which was my point in the last post.

A Million JLA's for one Disco Steve.

By the way, sorry chewy. If you can somehow move the non-topical stuff somewhere else, it'd ease my mind.

Or I can simply rehash my opinion that anything less than a HBO miniseries of Watchmen would be a wasted and futile effort.

this is Priceless! JLA im SO jealous now.......

From IGN.FilmForce

Quote:

February 28, 2005 - IGN FilmForce investigated the possibility that one of director Paul Greengrass' Bourne Supremacy cast members might reunite with him on his next film, Watchmen, and we've come up with some curious albeit inconclusive results.

We heard a rumor that Oscar-nominated actress Joan Allen – who appeared in The Bourne Supremacy as shady government operative Pamela Landy – might portray Sally Jupiter (a.k.a. The Silk Spectre I) in Watchmen.

For those unfamiliar with the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons comic book, Sally Juspeczyk (she later changed her surname to Jupiter) was the mother of Laurie Jupiter. Both women fought crime under the guise of The Silk Spectre. Sally's relationship with the slain Comedian (Edward Blake) is a key subplot in both the comic and the screenplay adaptation by David Hayter.

Sally's role in the draft I read was significantly diminished from what it had been in the comic but she was nevertheless important. Sally appeared in roughly a half dozen scenes.

IGN FilmForce's e-mail inquiries to Allen's reps at ICM and her publicist at PMK/HBH went unanswered. A rep at ICM refused comment on the matter when reached by phone.

The 48-year-old Allen's credits include Face/Off, The Notebook, The Contender and The Upside of Anger.

Watchmen aims to begin filming this summer in Britain for a 2006 release.

I giving Watchmen another try. I read that Alan Moore is a Ayn Rand fan and puts a lot of her philosophy in his comics. Its supposed to be really evident in Watchmen.

Edited because of my stupidity.

What the fuck does Frank Miller have to do with Watchmen?
Posted By: rex Re: Aronofsky Ankles Watchmen - 2005-03-02 11:27 PM
I'm sorry, I meant Allen Moore. Both of them are fans. I just got their names mixed up.

It's got Nite-Owl, and Nite-Owl II's costume looks a lot like Owl-Man's, and Owl-Man is The Bat-Man's anti-matter version, and The Bat-Man stars in Dark Knight Returns, and Dark Knight Returns is Miller's best work.

I like Allen Moore too, he directed Horatio's Drive: America's First Roadtrip!

In that context, isn't the designation "Intellectual" moreso a kind of partisan movement as opposed to an actual summation of a person's intellect?

Just because you dub your group "Pragmatists" or "Intellectuals" that doesn't necessarily make you pragmatic or intelligent.

Keep some dramamine handy. You're gonna need it.

Or, as ABBA would say (just to piss off whichever one of you hates ABBA with a passion hotter than the hottest flames of hell - I know at least one of you does...)

"You can watch, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that film, watch that scene, take some dramamine"

I can't think of anything Moore to say about what Greengrass is gonna do with "Watchmen" than that.

You do realize that Greengrass has been off this movie for some time; and it's now Zack Snyder of Dawn of the Dead and 300 fame directing this movie, right?

Um...no...not 'till you said so.

Anyways, I was mainly responding to a question about Greengrass's directing style. But I'll refrain from making comments that are snyder than that.
