• The masseuse who discovered Heath Ledger's body made two frantic calls to his latest squeeze, actress Mary-Kate Olsen, before dialing 911 for help, police revealed yesterday.
  
  "Heath is unconscious. I don't know what to do!" Diane Lee Wolozin screamed in her first call to Olsen on Tuesday.

Ledger is from my home town, Perth, most isolated city on the planet. His old high school is a 20 minute walk from where I am sitting.

Its likely that we could have met, as we apparently went to the same bars, although I don't remember him at all (unlike Hugh Jackman, who I remember as a waiter at a restaurant my wife and I used to frequent).

Ledger's death has come as quite a shock to our city. He was a local boy who made good on an international stage.

Over Christmas, Ledger was back in town, visiting family and friends. He was unmolested by local press. They recognised he was back in town for a holiday and left him alone. People here liked him. As a consequence he was able to go to the movies, hang out with friends, go to restaurant and cafes, and generally pretend he wasn't famous. So at least he had a nice Christmas before his death.

I feel a bit flat about it all. He had a daughter who he didn't see much of. When he was tracked by pararazzi in Sydney he kept giving them the finger to spoil their shots. When he was in Perth once year with Heather Graham, he took her to the speedway to watch the racecars. He seemed like a pretty down to earth guy.

A 'FREE PASS' FOR MARY-KATE

• NYPD officials inexplicably dropped plans yesterday to interview Heath Ledger's diminutive dish Mary-Kate Olsen about frantic phone calls she received from the masseuse who found the actor dead.
  
  Questions loom over whether the Police Department came under pressure from Olsen's considerable legal machine.
  
  The department's about-face shocked veteran law enforcement officials, who said that interviewing Olsen was something straight out of Investigation 101 - especially considering that toxicology reports are still pending.

• * Why would Olsen not immediately tell the masseuse to call 911?
  
  * What possible role could a trio of security guards - one with a pistol license - have in the medical emergency?
  
  * Were any of the guards qualified to administer CPR?
• There was a nine-minute lag between when the masseuse, Diane Lee Wolozin, first discovered Ledger's body and when she called 911. In that time, she called Olsen three times.

Yeah, that bit with the waiting nine minutes really bugs me.

And why did not anyone try CPR?

From what has been reported some variation on the following seems likely to me:

The masseuse calls Olsen. Olsen knows that Ledger has a drug history. She's been in rehab herself for cocaine. She thinks "shit, if we call 911 and there's drugs around we're both busted." So has the private bodyguards sent over because they can get rid of anything incriminating and, hopefully, get Ledger to the hospital. But then it turns out that Ledger is already dead.

Sounds about right to me.

I think I remember hearing that the masseuse knew Ledger was dead, or checked when she called Olsen or something.
I could be wrong, though.

  The drugs are the generic names for the OxyContin painkiller, the anti-anxiety drug Valium, Xanax, an anti-anxiety drug, and the sleep aids Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is another name for ibuprofen.
  
  The ruling comes two weeks after the 28-year-old Australian-born actor was found dead in the bed of his rented SoHo apartment. Police found bottles of six types of prescription drugs, including sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, in his bedroom and bathroom, raising speculation of an accidental drug overdose.

  The 28-year-old Australian actor, who died in January from an accidental overdose in his SoHo loft, filed the three-page will Down Under in April 2003.
  
  The will was filed before he fell in love with actress Michelle Williams on the set of "Brokeback" and had a child with her.
  
  It was unclear if there would be any provisions for Williams and their 2-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose.
  
  There's also no hint of the real size of his wealth, including the fancy Brooklyn townhouse he and Williams shared, any property in Australia or cash stuffed in trust funds.
  
  "If they had jointly held assets, those are not subject to probate," said Karin Barkhorn, an estates specialist at Bryan Cave. "There's no sleight of hand, it's just not required."

Most likely. However, it should be noted that, under the axiom that a motivated prosecutor can indict anybody for something, she might figure better safe than sorry.

For example, maybe her attorneys told her that just admitting she knew he had the drugs in her house might be enough for an overzealous prosecutor to slap a accessory to possession charge on her. Or maybe the DA would try to argue that, by not calling for an ambulance, she committed "criminally negligent homocide" or something.

Brokeback Mountain aside, how do you know it was a homocide?

I'm not saying it was. I'm saying that I've seen cases where someone dies from an overdose and the prosecution charges someone with criminally negligent homocide for not taking the victim to get medical treatment.

From what I've read, one of the allegations is that Olsen didn't call for EMTs or an ambulance at first but, instead, called her bodyguards to the scene.

Personally, I think that's stupid, not criminal, but we don't know all the facts and, if I was her attorney I might tell her to not talk because, as the Miranda warning says "anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

  The Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office closed its probe into Ledger's Jan. 22 death without any charges being filed - and won't enforce a grand jury subpoena against the diminutive 22-year-old actress

  The DEA was trying to find the source of the drugs that killed Ledger; most were legally prescribed in El Paso, Texas, and Los Angeles, sources said.
  
  Everybody connected with Ledger and his death has been interviewed and cooperated - with the exception of Mary-Kate Olsen.
  
  Instead, she's declined to cooperate and has insisted on immunity in return for talking to the feds.
