RKMBs
Posted By: Rob RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 3:46 PM
...con-fer-ence... thats spelled right, yes?

unimportant.

*ahem* ladies and gentlemen of the rkmbs.

this past halloween, we suffered some major outages on these message boards. tremendous downtime followed by unexplained losses.

troubling for you, headachying for me.
Posted By: Rob Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 3:46 PM
the past:

the reasoning behind the failures is the company that hosts this wonderous site, powweb -- the same name you've probably heard me belittle before, during other rkmb explosions.

without direct or progressive notice of any kind, they relocated my site and hundreds of other clients from one server (computer) to another.

at "best," that would have caused downtime of roughly 6 hours -- the downtime the majority of my site sufferend. at "worst," that would have screwed up aspects of the site that rely heavily on databases, codes, ecommerce, scripts (etc); namely, these forums.

in panic mode, i made many phone calls, many complaint emails, many ftp backups in order to save what i could, utilize what i could, and restore what i could.
Posted By: Rob Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 3:46 PM
the present:

some 48 hours later, the boards, allbeit clunky, were back online.

there were significant and noticeable damages, including the loss of an entire folder, thousands of threads in the comic book forum and off topic forum, certain avatars, specific member status tags, the ability to edit posts and create voting polls, etc, etc. some of these can be fixed; some already have.

one major problem:

powweb's new server has a file limit of 15,000 files. im safely within their bandwidth and file size limits, however, these boards push me over that 15,000 limit, as each thread is its own file.

just to get back online yesterday, i had to delete roughly 8,000 threads, mostly from the off topic, comics, and womens forums.

rest assured, i have back ups of them all.

however, with the limits in place, i can't restore them. further, with the posting pace on these boards, even with all the space that we have now, we'll surpass that limit within a few months, maybe weeks, and things will be shut down again.
Posted By: Rob Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 3:46 PM
the future:

we (i) have some options here.

barring the hope that my host will eliminate, or at least increase, this file limit... i'll either have to (a) find a new server home for these boards or (b) "upgrade" to a new, but similar, infopop boards system, which uses a meatier database (essentially, it keeps everything in a few files, instead of creating an individual file with every thread).

the (a) option:
this would involve me finding another host, backing up every file, transferring every file, resetting every file's permissions and a shitload more hassle. it could also mean i'd be shelling out more money on a monthly basis, getting less in return, or dozens of other unknowns.

my current host might not have the best reliability, but its not that expensive and you get a lot for your money. the pros are much higher than the cons, which is a rarity with web hosts.

as always, i'm shopping around, anyway.

the (b) option:
i use the term "upgrade" in quotes because i'm relatively unfamiliar with the new program. its still infopop, so everything will be very similar. odds are, the learning curve will be small -- as different from these current boards as these are from the old DCMBs.

the program is called ubb.threads (this one is officially called ubb.classic). check out some screen shots here

all posts and member accounts, from what i know, can safely be brought along to the new boards, so we wouldn't lose much of anything (again, as far as i know). things would generally look, work, and act the same, with the potential for newer and cooler features (such as text color options, and such)
Posted By: Rob Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 3:47 PM
neither choice is a favorite of mine, nor one that i would make (at this time) if i didn't have to (and yes, we have to).

all i can promise is that there will be an RKMBs, there will always be an RKMBs, it will always be free of charge to you, and assanine conversation coupled with boobellic imagery will always be the norm.

thank you, and rob bless.

i'll take a few questions now:

Will any nukes be used?

How much file space did we have before?
Posted By: Rob Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 4:20 PM
the file space wasn't an issue. i'm permitted 1,000 MBs (1 GB), but we were only using 40-45%.

the file amount is what became the issue. they shut down sites with over 15,000, and my site was at 25,000 or so. the boards, alone, were around 22,000.

next question, please:
Posted By: Pig Iran Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 4:31 PM
Can you condense them into a file that contains multiple files?
Posted By: Rob Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 4:35 PM
yes and no.

in the current set up, there are ways to archive threads. that would group a bunch together into one huge file. however, it makes them read-only -- meaning no 2-year anniversary bumping or drunken bsamsing or whatever. sorta defeats the purpose of having them.

next question, please:

Posted By: PenWing Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 5:32 PM
It really sucks that you have to deal with all of this, Rob. If it helps, I took a look at the link you provided above, and the layout of what the boards will look like with option (b) looks more or less the same.

So, thanks for the boards, sorry about the crap, and good luck with whatever you have to do to keep the RKMB's up and running.

Those boards look faggish. So with you deleting files, does this mean that we won't have as many Llance pics to splurt to?
Posted By: Rob Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-03 7:51 PM
avatars will be back, its just not currently a priority. i'd rather have the boards working solidly, first.

the look of the ubb threads is their default look. the colors and icons and such are similar to the default of this board. all the gray tones and neat-o buttons were things i later added (and could later add there). dont judge it by its weak style.

Should we at Hero Headquarters be concerned about losing some or all of our story threads?

BTW, if you wanted to, the completed stories that are in the "locked" position could easily be moved into the same archive folder. I know that's not much help, but it's an option. Unlike most forums, when we close a topic at HHQ, it stays closed for miscellaneous reasons.

not really.

every thread i deleted i made a back up of first. so, even if i did delete the hero threads (which i wont), i'd have extra copies of them i could later upload.

posts/threads, yes. they were a "controlled loss" -- something i deleted on purpose to lower the file limit and get these boards back online.

PMs, no. they were "premature deletation" -- something that got lost in internet timespace during the outage.

Posted By: Poverty Lad Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-06 3:54 AM
It's not really what they DID as what the DIDN'T do, which was post there. Robby busted his butt setting up LHQ for Legion fans who were disenfranchised with the new DC boards. The majority of them were even LESS enamored of the hijinx of the beloved and illustrious NBz, and fled in fear of the dread LLANCE onslaught of '03. Since then, it's pretty much been Llancey's (and Franta's!) playpen and an eater of bandwidth. Rob did well to delete it.

WTF!

Well, after reading this thread I almost forgot what this was about... :)

Rob, you know I am in the same boat as you with the POW. It's really us that are POW's. Prisoner's of this companies lamebrained skillz. [AAAHHHH!!!]

Not that my opinion matters much but I do have suggestions.

The Board:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
It only broke because of Pow-Web. You cant just Copy and paste boards obviously, but these things are not so obvious to the POW.
There are other boards but I dont think most of them have the flexibility of UBB (or the support in general on ubbdev), while usually lacking in good code as well. Thus the price difference I suppose. I am sticking with UBB for good or evil, this mostly due to lack of crashes and again, flexible code in conjunction with mods and hacks. The far above mentioned boards I would avoid, I like the possible (and current) looks of UBB. UBB does have the elite service which is supposedly easily upgraded to, including the hacks.

The service:
"We gotta get outta this place"
They screwed me several times, and their guarantee of 99% uptime is laughable. Try 90% at best. Plus, there is no guarantee. And on a technical standpoint, they have pissed me off many times, your's Rob being the last.

I am definetly getting another service and while the download and upload of the boards is a lot of work I think the price is worth it for the future.

Here are a couple links to reviews of Web Hosts, notice Pow web is not ever listed as a good service, its mentioned in passing as a decent "deal". We all know now that it's not, an end-user should never have to put in a call or e-mail, ridiculous... [no no no]

http://www.hostaz.com/

http://www.hostpile.com/

http://www.hostingstart.com/

I am thinking about Lunar Pages but haven't decided yet.

Either way, Pow web is way gonna be subfucked by something major in the way of my technical boot in their server's ass. I dont care at this point if they find out.

Another option is Dedicated Hosting. On a dedicated host, they would never ever move your stuff to another computer without first consulting in depth.

http://smartconsumers.infinology.com/secretdedicated.html?AID=9485295&PID=1385269

These guys have dedicated servers from BSD $39/mo to Linux $59/mo.

Just an idea.

Sorry for the long post.

I've had a quick look at the sites on the other end of these links and consequently I am now a member of a community that I know nothing about, under the name Magic Raymond?!?. I don't think Magic Raymond will be doing much,if any posting.

It's difficult to pass judgement on the boards because aside from minor details, they look like hundreds of other boards that you see all over the internet. I didn't really like the designs or the colour schemes but this is purely cosmetic and I guess there's some scope for you to set up the site the way you want it.

I imagine the things that will recommend using these boards is going to be the stuff behind the scenes - reliable, flexible software, good tech support etc.

good idea to register, bw7. thats really the only way you can truly check out all the features of that type of forum vs. this type.

cosmetically, everything on that board and this one can be changed. color scheme, basic layout, etc. for example, my boards look like this, but the same program for another site made them look like this. so, don't get too caught up in a critique of the colors and background images.

if you review, be more wary of what the screens look like when you first enter. or when you reply to a post. how the private messages and profile screens look. is it as easy to navigate inbetween forums.

etc, etc.

Do you think they are going to merge the UBB threads with Classic when they hit Version 7?
Or just keep it separate?

UBBDEV.com seems to be a hybrid, am I wrong in this assumption?

I like the navigation of the sample threads and the transitions, but obviously a lot of MOD and hack work would be in order when changing to this. I guess the more hacks you have now, the tougher the move. Luckily the CGI code is all the same.
That's one of the things I really like about InfoPop in general.

i'd guess not. though i don't agree with it and think its kinda silly, the split since v6 was intentional. infopop is now branching out into several different MB programs.

like my current boards here, ubbdev.com uses classic, but a (somewhat) modded version of it. ubbthreads (ubbdev's sister site) is a (somewhat) modded version of threads.

well, for starters, tho these boards use cgi, threads do not. thats their main benefit -- instead of creating a new cgi file for every member and every thread, they pack all the shiznick into one big ass, data-crunchin mysql database.

that'll change my server's file numbers from roughly 25,000 to roughly 7. it should also ensure things run a little smoother and a lil faster.

to properly move over, i'd have to strip ALL hacks from the boards. wouldn't affect any of you or even the posts, just the way they look.

then, i'd have to import everything, test it out, run around naked, and start remodding stuff.

the ubb.threads license will cost me like $250, and the modding, tho free, will take days (which is why i'm really looking for some good feedback on those threads sites, so i can make sure this is a direction we WANT to go in)

buuut... if the end result is a more stabile, faster rkmbs, with all the fun and love of these, plus new features like dancing bananas, so be it.

Ahhhh, I've been quoted, (feel so special!)

Sorry Adam, Rob and I do not meet, there would be a rip in the Computer-Person continuum.
(But here's a link for ya.)

MySQL is a good idea that they have, but do you trust Powweb to have MySQL running properly on their Apache Servers?

I understand that the "actual" file amount would go a way down (being an old SQL/Oracle guy) but I thought that Powweb looks at the entire MYSQL Device and Database and sifts through for actual relational files thus giving you a total close to what you have now. (Run-on sentence, bad use of gerunds)
Could see the POW pulling some kind of carp like that.
Perhaps Lunar Pages,
Supposedly these guys do not have this gay file limit that Powweb has.
Need to get that in writing though.

Doesn't VBulletin use MySQL also, it is quick on some of the pages I've seen, definitely faster than most UBB Boards.

I thought that the Threads by InfoPOP used the MYSQL backend for power, as well as CGI on the front end for threading and mods, this be incorrect? Me silly with this web programming nuttiness.

Almost forgot, My buddy John Petrucci's forum is pretty slick using phpBB.

But, pretty much the same as INfoPOp I guess.

you could be right. you know more of the coding world than i do -- all of this mysql shizzit is very unfamiliar to me. mebbe you could help with the future hacking of stuff?

i'm beta testing the software now, trying to find out what it can and can't do, how it works on my server, etc.

updates soon, i hope.

And, did I mention that Pow web is carp?

also, on the UBB code,
code:
[b][/b]

is accepted, where as
code:
[B][/B]

is not. Same with italics.

and if you have a picture in there and you edit it, it posts as <img=> and the picture doesn't show up in the post.

Two things that bug me that are on most message boards(and the preview one) but not the current RKMBs:

Displaying the number of "views" a thread has. It's just so unnecessary, and that bothers me.

Each post within a thread having a subject line. Once again, completely unnecessary. I just prefer clutter like that being gone.
Posted By: backwards7 Re: RKMB press conference - 2003-11-20 3:29 AM
That little shout box (basically a small chat window) on the main page of threadsdev.com is intriguing. You can open it in a separate window as well. I guess on these boards it might just become a home for quick-fire abuse.

If you go to your profile options, there's an option called 'My cookies' and I'm not sure if I've understood this correctly -

Does this mean that the board stores the threads you have visited in your profile so that they load quicker the next time you visit?

This is nothing to do with what your web browser stores right? I'm assuming that your cookies for the threadsdev board are saved on line - Is that right?

I'm lost as hell in that place. I opened a door and I thought I was where I was supposed to be, but it turned out that I wasn't and then a big scary looking guy told me to get out of the ladies bathroom and then I couldn't find the door again and I wound up just wandering around until the janitor saved me. Help!

Rob, you need a board that has a Smite option. People don't take banning seriously anymore.

You need to be able to smite posters who mis-behave on a regular basis...or nuke them or something.

oh-kay. some news.

i just did some wheelin and dealin, which'll cut the transition costs on my end in half. thats good. for me.

the new version of ubb.threads was released last weekend. thats good. for you.*

i'm purchasing and doing all the learning on my end starting tonight, and we'll hopefully switch over during the christmas holiday break, when i get some free time.

on your end, i was assured all member accounts and posts can be transferred over. plus, we'll regain the threads i had to delete a few weeks ago.

also, * with the new version, ubb.threads is now much more like classic. user names can have spaces. ubb code works as normal. 'standard' features, like quoting, are back in bidniz. basically, all of your above concerns have been (or can be) resolved.

here is the official ubb.threads sample. it uses the new version of the program. its in the standard color set, which can of course be altered to fit this (or any) style. it doesn't feature all of the hacks and mods here (like my custom graemlins, avatars, custom title, etc), but those can all be popped in as i learn the new program. i'll also have the ability to create multiple user-selected templates, so's you can still have the gray boards, the dc-looking boards, or whatever you personally select.

all in all, some great news.

bottom line, on your end, these boards will simply be "upgrading," as i've done several times in the past through the various versions.

boo yah.

tests of the new program are going very well. i've reworked the colors and such to resemble these boards and a few of the bonus features here have been addded over there.

and, so far, the new boards run much quicker than these -- and they'll be more reliable (so, in theory, no more fucking "cache errors")

i might be able to upgrade these sooner (and with less trouble) than i originally estimated.

in addition to updating the boards, and ditching this older, glitchier software, i'm also changing web hosts, and ditching this older, glitchier shitbag of a host, powweb.

that should prevent the 3-a-week "power outtages" this site has been having... and hopefully, for good.

i can, and will, do both switches at the same time. both would cause some minor downtime for you -- anywhere from 6 hours to 2 days. aside from that, nothing should change on your end.

once that downtime period is over, my site, email, and boards (including your accounts and posts) will be back in bidniz.

i'm not exactly sure what the new URL for these boards will be, so just go to www.robkamphausen.com if things are a lil screwy. odds are, i'll make a fake "ultimatebb.cgi" file that just redirects you (and preventing "i come here by bookmark" mishaps that have foiled universes altogether)

and yes, this whole ordeal is a pain in the ass on my end, so just be a lil patient. if you feel the need to yell and blame someone, i'll be happy to give you random email addresses, more than likely starting with franta's.

ok, thats it! be prepared for the switcheroo to take place within the next week

however, within an hour or so after that, i'll provide a link to a temp board over at my new site. you'll be able to blast each other with homosexuality there, until the new boards are active.

the new boards could also be activated later tonight. however, the URL robkamphausen.com won't link to them for 24-72 hours. so, until that time, you'll probably have to use the temp link.
