(not related to the kickass website reax sometimes mentions)
I had a pretty good job interview today. micro center decided since I practically live in their store as it is I might be a good person to work there and sell their products. from what I was told today they'll probably be skipping me right over snarf-level general-sales peon and hiring me as one of the senior sales reps - basically running sales in the 'build your own pc' department - after the basic training stuff. which is nice, because that way I make more money working 30 hours a week than I made working 40 hours a week back at target. expect occasional hardware-related posts in games and tech.
rawk.
Fuck yeah, Phil! Congrats man!
Are the boards mega-slow for anyone else right now?
Congrats on the new job Mr. Sammitch.
And Pro, the boards are slow for you because I'm DDoSing you right now. I mean, my friends from Denmark are DDoSing you RIGHT NOW.

Farg. I have to go Florida this weekend for a funeral on my wife's side of the family. Might I use this thread to bitch about it? I don't think it's worth an entire thread of its own...
BTW, Sammitch, how many guys did you have to blow to get the job?
SOM only wants to know because he has a job interview himself this weekend.

Just keepin' ya in the know.
so do you know a reputable site for replacement gateway and hp-Compaq laptop parts? Cuz I keep getting f'd in the a from eBay.
I would do a google search and look for a reputable business,or if you are near a local computer repair store and either they can order parts for you and/or refer you to a site/business that can. I would definitely stay away from e-bay and sites like those for those. Barring that, there's always Gateway and HP's website....probably charge an arm or a leg though. Tell them you will fellate the exec of their choice for 15 minutes and you might get a discount
I've done the google search thing a few times too, but was sent European model parts, or shit that straight up didn't match. Oh well.
what's the model number of your machine(s) and what components do you need?
your best bet is to get the factory specs from the manufacturer so you know what motherboard/cpu combination you have. there's a surprising amount of wiggle room when it comes to replacing components; usually the motherboard is the only thing limiting what you can add or swap out.
Instead of seeing your T.W.A.T. (This Week At Target) Phil, can we can weekly M.C. (Micro Center) Sammitch Raps?
you know I can't commit to anything like that for fear of seeming reliable.
what's the model number of your machine(s) and what components do you need?
Its different stuff. Keyboards, DVD drives, monitors...never issues with desktop pc's but for some reason I get the craziest shit when I order replacement parts for laptops.
that's because there isn't nearly the same level of standardization with laptops. most motherboard designs, for example, are proprietary; there aren't standards like with desktop motherboards (e.g. mini-, micro-, and ATX) and almost all the major components are integrated (dell and hp still keep the broadcomm WLAN/3G adapters separate). moreover, all case designs are proprietary and each allows varying degrees of access to the components you can swap out - a lot of toshiba and dell laptops make you remove the hinge cover and the damn keyboard to get to the RAM, it's hard to disconnect many laptops' LCDs without damaging the video chipset unless you have the right tools, and it's almost impossible to replace the motherboard itself and still get the whole machine to go back together like new.
which means unless the problem is something like the hard drive (which have more than doubled in price since last year's tsunami wiped out western digital's and seagate's production facilities in the pacific) or the keyboard (which you'd better replace cautiously if you don't wanna break the retainer clips or short across the motherboard), you're almost better off replacing the whole damn thing. that's the situation I'm in with my hp laptop; the power-supply terminal where the AC adapter connects is broken, but you have to take all the service covers off, unmount the motherboard from the back of the case, separate the terminal from the motherboard, solder the appropriate connectors, resolder the terminal back onto the motherboard, and hope the case goes back together. with bench fees at most computer retailers (including this one) running upwards of $70 an hour (just general labor time, not even the costs attached to the repairs themselves), it could cost more than half the price of a replacement laptop to get it fixed.
Doog, you have to pay Sammitch's consultation fee.
You owe him 10 cents and a skittles wrapper.
SURVEY SAYS....MOTHAFUCKA!
I start monday morning. they said something about fast-tracking me through training because I already have retail experience, but I'm not sure how long I'll be training for this thing.
Training is gay. get out there and fuck your clientele in the wallets!
Cuz I keep getting f'd in the a.
... and you love it.
I don't love it, but it's a responsibility.
