I wanna get something like an iPad (mainly to read Word docs and browse, I don't give a shit if you can play Angry Birds in it), but I'd rather not deal with all the bullshit that comes with buying an Apple product. I'd wait for the Kindle Fire but Kindles have limited usability outside the US. There's probably a way to hack them, but that sounds like a pain in the ass (and I shouldn't have to do that anyway, so fuck those guys).

Any recommendations?

Is price a consideration?

I think the Asus transformer would be right up your alley, mainly because if you get tired of using it as a tablet, you can attach the keyboard dock and use it as a netbook.

Whoa!
Shit, that looks awesome. I might even retire this old piece of shit if it has a good keyboard.
I'm talking about my anus obviously.

The Transformer is a tad expensive, but you were originally considering an iPad, which is still more expensive than the transformer.

As for straight up tablets, I believe the closest rival of the iPad is Samsung's Galaxy Tab (at least, in south east asia). It's not as good as the iPad, of course. But it's way cheaper.
