Not that the Commonwealth is a big deal anymore - in fact, I believe Australia wants out - but here's a thread to display your uniqueness for those from Canada, U.K., Australia and other Commonwealth countries. God Save the Queen! (and Princess Crujectra, of course)
Bet American fans didn't know that we in Canada have our very own villain whose name ends in "O": Gordo Campbell, premier of British Columbia. He got the name Gordo when he was arrested for DUI on Maui a few months ago.

The Commonwealth is a bit strange, methinks. Australia may want out, but Mozambique wanted in, and recently got in, despite never having been a British colony or dominion.
I take it this doesn't include the Commonwealths of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, or Kentucky? (Yes, technically, they're not States.)

Australia don't want out of the Commonwealth, just a lot of people there want the Queen removed as head of state (which these days wouldn't automatically exclude them from the Commonwealth).
And i'm pretty sure Hong Kong is still part of it too. Even though it's now part of China they certainly had a team at the Commonwealth Games last year so maybe they're still honourary members. Lots of countries do want in though. It may not be the most prestigious group to have membership of but it does actually have advantages to it.

In Australia we had a refarendum a few years back to leave the Commonwealth and if memory serves correct the vote was to stay by a huge majority in all but one state. Having said that however the referendum question was very poorly worded and we were pretty much left with the possability of a power vacume as nobody came up with a replacment. Anyway Australia is currently under the control of an erronious little troll like dwarf who seems delighted with the role of George W Bushs lap dog (and a minor one at that) but if the powers that be had there way the 51st state of America would be in the Southern hemisphere.

That's pretty much it. I'd really doubt that Australia would want to leave the Commonwealth. Australia established APEC when ASEAN wouldn't let it join in the 80s (and the EEC - now EU - in the 60s). Australia likes to join things, not get out of things.

News to me. Maybe you're thnking of the Pan Pacific Games, or the Asian Games? HK doesn't field a team for the Comm. Games anymore - its now sovereignty-wise a part of the PRC: even though it can still field teams for international events such as the Olympics, it just seems very un-PC to be involved in the Comm. Games.

Well, we'd be glad to have y'all, but switching to a single system of slang words would probably deep six the deal anyway. Plus how would all the "anglophiles" in America display how "quirky" and "cool" they are if using spellings like "theatre" became the norm?

Of course countries want in the Commonwealth. We not only have Gordo, but our meetings have the best buffets.
If Commonwealth of Mass., etc. people want to post here, that's okay. You're welcome too. You could join Canada, but you'll have to get in line behind Florida, on which Quebec has first dibs.
I thought it was kinda funny that there are two Polar Boy characters here from Australia. I know it can get pretty hot there, so I guess that's wishful thinking.
And I'll have you know I won 2nd prize in a Commonwealth Society essay contest in Grade 11 and got to meet the Governor General.

What about those of us posting from the original 13 colonies, FC? After all, if it wasn't for Georgia, England wouldn't have had anywhere to empty their debtors prisons into, not to mention what a fine job we did as a buffer state between South Carolina and Florida.

Well, you learn something new every day - and it doesn't all come from Cecil Adams, either. I didn't know Georgia was the Australia of the colonies. Quite frankly, I didn't even know that Georgia was one of the original 13. And who says that Americans are ignorant of other countries? (Besides Rick Mercer (canadian joke, eh?))?
