No need to respond to this. I just need to write this out so I can get all the tears out of my system for today.
Kelsey had been sick yesterday. All morning and afternoon, hell pretty much since Ivane (my sister) & I left for work that morning.
She'd thrown up twice, barely eatten any food, pooped & peed once and is weak as a newborn.
Ivane took her in to the vet (he works out of his home & makes house calls) because she was getting worse.
Finally, around 6pm, he calls back and tells us that she's still very, very weak but what had him worried was her gums and tongue. Her gums were almost white and her tongue color was very, very pale.
It was too late to send out major blood work for the night, so he's going to do some more minor blood work there as well as some x-rays.
He says that she's stable and not in any danger of dying, but that he'll call as soon as he finds out what's going on.
The thing that had us worried...he told us that with dogs, sometimes their spleens will just bleed and that could be causing her symptoms.
Our poor baby...not at home but some place she's never been...all weak and with none of us there to calm her down or make her more at ease.
And to top if off, Toby (our cat) hasn't left anyone's side since Kelsey left. He's been around someone the whole time.
God...what a day for this to happen. She better be okay. I couldn't have that day be associated with two beings I love passing away.
Being that it was the 14th anniversary of my dad passing away is hard enough. We've had Kelsey for almost 12 years...losing her is going to be very hard on Ivane and I.
We got the call around 9am this morning. We (mom, Ivane & I) all cried for awhile and then decided to go to the vet to see Kelsey and say our last goodbyes before we have her cremated tomorrow.
I didn't think that any of us would be able to do it, but we did. And I think it's good that we did.
I got to see her, pet her, give her one last kiss on her head and say goodbye.
The vet called a little while after we got back home. He had done the autopsy and it was as he thought. She had cancer throughout her spleen and all around various areas of her abdomen. Because of the advanced stage of the cancer and the tumor, her spleen finally ruptured and she bled out into the surrounding body cavity. We now think, that when she was sick last summer (not eating and losing weight) was the onset of the cancer.
He said she went fast and that it was probably better that she went that way. She didn't suffer very long.
I asked if there had been anything that could've been done. He said they could've tried to take out the spleen and the cancer. But he also said that most dogs don't survive for very long after that and that the cancer would probably come back in other places and she would've suffered.
