Why do they always put the good music in the Folk category?

I wouldn't consider Zevon (or Tom Waits) Folk music, yet both won for Folk.

Is it because they have to give the flavor of the month backstreet britneys an award, but need somewhere to put the real musicians?

Thats my guess...

Zevon though really is kinda in a category of his own much like Waits...

I rarely watch these awards shows but the patients had it on...what was with the whole psuedo lounge singer mottif of Timberlake..

I did find the Jason Alexander bit amusing.

And the fact that Zevon's son Jordan said "When your sons or daughters are asking you 'Who's Warren Zeovon'...add on A GREAT FATHER".
Reminded me of a summer fest deal he did where he was on before Poi Dog Pondering he asked "Do any of of you fucking kids know whoo I am?"

Good for 'ol Warren Zevon! I'm sure he's smiling somewhere up in heaven right now if for nothing more than what his kid said about him!

Rock singer Warren Zevon, who rushed to complete his final album, "The Wind," before his September death from lung cancer, won his first two Grammy Awards, one for contemporary folk album. He also was honored for "Disorder in the House," a duet with Bruce Springsteen , which won for rock performance by a duo or group with vocal.

"His hard-boiled side would say, 'I don't care about this. These people never got me,'"said Jorge Calderon, a producer and longtime friend of the notoriously irreverent Zevon. "His other side, which was very Sammy Davis Jr., that part of him would be loving it. He'd be dressed in an all-cashmere suit. He'd be here digging it."

Of course he's won an award for The Wind: he's dead. I'd imagine Johnny Cash won something as well.
Nice to see he's finally getting some props, though.

Glad to see that Warren won something. He should have been winning awards for the last 30 years though.

In fact, given how far up its collective ass the Grammys usually are, I'm surprised those idiots didn't nominate him for "best new artist."

Frankly, guys, of all the major media industry awards, the Grammys are the worst. They have the least credibility, IMHO, of any of them. They do not reward good music, they reward strong-selling music.

This is not meant at all to besmirch Zevon winning one, although I have a feeling that Zevon wouldnt' give a shit about it. But it's often the case that artists win after their deaths...John Lennon's DOUBLE FANTASY won Album Of The Year following Lennon's death. No way that album gets a hint of a Grammy nom had Lennon not been gunned down.

To my knowledge, the Stones have never won a Grammy. Townshend and the Who have never even been nominated (although Townshend has a Tony win and an Oscar nomination)

The Grammys are crap. Pay them no attention.
