Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Tuesday, May 20, 8 p.m. (UPN)

WHAT HAPPENS: Get out your garlic-coated tissues, 'cause this it. After seven years, the Scooby Gang is about to go the way of Scrappy. Creator Joss Whedon would put a stake through us if we revealed too much about the series finale, but we CAN say that Buffy will finally face the season's Big Bad, known as the First, who turns out to be the father of all vampires. At the same time, Buffy's own ''first,'' Angel (David Boreanaz), will cross networks to return for a last kiss. And hopefully Whedon really was joking when he told EW that the ep will end when ''Buffy's head explodes like a pumpkin.''

WHY YOU GOTTA SEE IT: You'd have to have the undead heart of a vamp to want to miss Buffy's final Hellmouth adventure.

Cookie dough? heh [biiiig grin]

He didn't stick around for very long.

Only the crazy ones "sleep on a night like this."

Oooh...so much for the original opening bit..."unto every generation..."...but it's cool.

The humor! It came back! WooHoo!

Hoppy! Floppy! Bunnies!

Oooooooo....Woods is damn sexy...

Doh! Anya...

Woah...Spike....wow....

"No you don't. But thanks for saying it."

Spike?!? [gulp!] What?!? [gulp!] Noooooooooooo!!!! :'(

Buh-bye Sunnydale!

"So, what are we gonna do?"

Totally broke my heart. Been watching for 7 long years - back from freshman college days when local stations only played it at 3 a.m., all the way til now. Really sad to see it go.

The last episode gave us a little bit of everything and did that whole "back to basics" kind of deal. I really haven't enjoyed it since the move to UPN but this last episode made up for it.

I really liked the concept of how Buffy won. "To each generation a slayer is born" - "because a bunch of men made the rules. How'd you like that power NOW"? And a hundred girls get activated as slayers. Going out with a bang.

Not to mention fighting a 1000 uber-Vamps at the bottom of the hell-mouth in dramatic, slow motion - GRANDE FINALE way. Very kewl. :)

I wonder why, if Willow can tap into that kind of power - let alone bring a slayer back from the dead - why she couldn't heal Xander's eye? [yuh huh]

Because that would take all the fun out of it...and yet another "the core cast can't be hurt for long" kinda thing.

Personally...I prefer it that Xander remain as is.

True. Me,I believe some things are worth doing for character-sakes than just so not to avoid the cliche'. I'd rather listen to people complain about it and see Willow do it - as I believe she would in real life - Xander is her best friend, and her first love. There's a point where good friends become family - and I think these two had that connection. Brother and sister. I can see why the "i'm afraid to do magic" card was pulled, but still..... ah well. :)

I miss it already. I'm almost glad Firefly got cancelled so that Joss could put his full effort onto this last ep. I just knew that this season was going to end on a bomb - but surprisingly, it was great!

I'm anxious to see what Marsters' character will be on Angel - since the contract is already there but Spike is "dead". I'm going to let it rest before i start speculating, or I'll be curious all summer. What did you think about the core four in the hallway? It WAS a good ep, wasn't it? :)

Now I'm REALLY sorry I missed it. Sadly, I forgot all about it until around 10pm. Just got done looking for the last episode on Kazaa and Bottler, but came up empty.

What was the NAME and EPISODE NUMBER of that last episode? That would help plenty.

I thought it kinda sucked. The whole year's been a big letdown. There was no explanation for Giles' odd behavior his season, the stuff with Joyce wasn't really explained, and she didn't really stop the First Evil. They just stopped her army. Buffy's ressurection caused an imbalance between good and evil. That's why the First was able to act now. So, by activating all those new Slayers just creates a larger imbalance which would allow the First to do even more.

Something of a letdown for me too, and hard to follow.

The best part was definitely Spike's "No you don't, but thanks for saying it" line. That was, for lack of better term, hella cool.

I really hope that the rumors of James Marsters joining the cast of Angel next year are untrue or a deliberate misdirection. I'd hate to see Spike's last act rendered meaningless.

He came in at the very end of the episode last week. He was super happy and joking around. Which is odd considering he just lost his son and the woman he loves, may have compromised his team to Wolfram and Hart, and ended world peace.
Guess the Buffy writers don't watch Angel. [no no no]

I actually got the feeling Angel was very happy to have seen Buffy...

...and that he might think he's still kind of putting one over on Wolfram & Hart.

All in all, a nice ending to the series...and, those that want to can show up in Angel...heck, I wonder if we'll see any new Slayers over in Angel next year?

Now, if we could just get Firefly back on the air...

I liked the finale. It was a bit rushed and should have been two hours, but it ended in a mostly satisfying manner. The only thing I was really disappointed with was the death of Anya, which was handled matter-of-factly. It was as if Whedon said, "Oh, look, we've got to kill off one character, and it can't be one of the main stars, so lets pick the sarcastic ex-demon who doesn't contribute much anyway."

Granted, I haven't been watching Buffy regularly in the last few years. I've just had other things to do and I consider VCRs to be the spawn of Satan. But it was amazing how easily I got back into these last two episodes. Seeing ol' Xander with an eyepatch was a bit of a jolt, but everything else fell into place. Buffy sure has grown from an awkward teenager into a tough-as-nails general in the war against evil. Dawn has also grown from a bratty and annoying kid sister to a resourceful but still bratty young woman. And then we have Willow's humility ("This woman is more powerful than all of them." Yeah, right, she seemed to be thinking).

Loved the scene with the four Scooby originals in the hallway, pondering what to do the day after the possible end of the world. That's so ... Buffy.

One thing confused the helloutta me: What happened to the other residents in Sunnydale? Did I miss something, or was the town abandoned?

There were a couple of epps that mentioned people were leaving town in mass. A recent epp showed Buffy walking down the cente of a street that was bumper to bumper with slow moving cars full of people and demons leaving town.

Yeah, but she also found a guy holding out in his house with a shotgun. So there could be several people left hanging around. After all the crap that's happened in that town, longtime residents should have thick skin.

Wanna know how Spike might come back?

SPOILER ALERT!

* The first characters we see are Buffy and Spike. It’s a flashback to Spike’s final moments over the Sunnydale hellmouth. Spike goes all bright and dusty, then:
* The first new scene is set in Wolfram & Hart’s “White Room.” It’s somebody’s point of view. Somebody on his or her back. Winifred, Charles and Wesley are all peering down. None of the trio has ever seen this mystery-person before, but Wes seems to have a pretty good idea who it is. Angel arrives and eliminates any abmbiguity with a single-word: “Spike.” No more POV. Spike naked save a familiar-looking amulet, turns groggily toward Angel and mutters, “Oh … bloody hell.” He hear a violin and the title credits roll.
* Actually, before the big reveal, the first thing we hear in the White Room POV shot is heavy breathing. But when we see Team Angel hovering, none of them seems to be breathing very hard.
* When Angel offers Spike a cup of blood in the law firm’s examination room, Spike says he actually feels like a chocolate shake.
* The second Spike learns Buffy survived the big doings in what used to be Sunnydale, he starts off to find his true love. But Angel won’t let him leave until he can figure out why Spike is still alive. “Oh reeaaly?” asks Spike. “And are we sure that’s the reason now?” Angel also wants the amulet back, since it’s technically Wolfram & Hart property. A big Spike-Angel fight ensues.
* There is much shattering of law-firm glass. As the Spike-Angel fight grows more intense, Angel goes into vamp-face. Spike tries to do the same, but finds he can’t!
* Angel manages to yank the Amulet away from Spike. Spike begins gasping and turning blue. “Angel, the amulet,” cries Wesley. “I think he needs it. He’s dying.” Angel hesitates, but Fred reminds Angel that Spike just finished saving the world.
* Angel returns the amulet and Spike’s complexion immediately turns rosier. “His breathing is returning to normal,” advises Wes. “‘Breathing?’” asks Fred.
* Angel rips a giant mirror from the wall. He can’t see himself in it, but Spike casts a reflection!
* Lilah turns up with Spike’s blood test. The DNA matches what the Initiative took out of Hostile 17 four years ago, but the amulet seems to have “cleansed” the vampire right out of Spike. He’s all human now!
* Wes remembers the Shanshu prophecy. “When that a souled vampire fulfills his destiny – whatever that may be – he becomes human.”
* But if Spike’s human, why is so strong, and able to fight Angel so effectively? Wes remembers speaking to Willow by phone about the “joining spell” that turned all the potentials into slayers. “So when the cleansing began,” asks Lilah, “did you – I dunno – touch Buffy?” Spike answers in the affirmative, flashing back to the fiery hand-holding.
* And then, at the end of this first act, Lilah and Wes come to the same conclusion – and reveal one last amazing thing about this new Spike:
* He’s now the world’s first male vampire slayer.

Anya's death spoiled it for me. This was a character I never cared for but her death seemed thrown in. It just didn't work having Xander cracking jokes at the end like that. Great series for the most part, hope Angel is back next year!

A couple of things about the finale really bugged me:

-- What the heck was that thing Angel gave to Buffy (who then gave it to Spike)?? It came from out of *nowhere* and suddenly became the thing that hands them victory on a silver platter -- What the fuck?!? They had all season to build to it and they just toss it in at the last minute -- bad writing, imo.

-- Anya's death [sad] . I know not every fictional death has to be grand and majestic like Spike's, but for a show like this, I would've expected Joss to give her a better sendoff (unless she's really the one going over to "Angel" and that death was just a setup (hope hope)).

-- I don't really understand what Buffy's plan was -- I get the point of Willow's spell, but if Spike's amulet hadn't saved their asses, what were they really planning to do? And what were all those non-slayers doing guarding the school hallways? Even *one* ubervamp should've been too much for them, let alone whatever number poured out of the hellmouth.

-- This is more something that's bugged me for awhile rather than the last ep, but it kinda wrankles me that Dawn's existence as "The Key" is simply *never* mentioned again or used in some way -- she crossed over from simply annoying to completely useless.

That was from Angel. In the season finale he was given the necklace and told it would help Buffy. I like little crossover things like that.

Emma Caulfield had some very bad dealings with the studio and made it clear to Joss that she didn't want to del with them again (which she'd have to if Anya returned) so Joss killed her. I thought it was a bit cowardly. They should've killed one of the main characters. I think Xander since he was the first one to meet Buffy on the show.

They really messed up with the writing this year. Early episodes were excellent (Conversations with Dead People especially) but ever since those potentials moved in the show was pretty mediocre.

I think it was implied in the beginning of year 6 that she doesn't open anything anymore. Buffy's death sealed the gateway, so Dawn is useless. I agree with you there. It's kinda sad because the actress Michelle Trachtenburg (sp?) was a big fan of the show and it was a dream come true to join the cast. Then she became the Wesley Crusher of the series.

I do too when it makes some amount of sense. The Willow appearance in "Angel" made perfect sense since she gave Angel back his soul years earlier, and I liked how Faith crossed back and forth, but I thought it was a bit duex ex machina for the key to their victory to just come out of nowhere like that.
