Specific songs would really help. Im on a music shortage, all the stuff that comes out today is absolute shit. I mean even the rock its not like it was 10 -15 years ago. Music then was so much better. Most of my music is rock from the 70s and 80s, and im only 21. Music these days is just shit.

Give us some examples of what you already have in your collection and listen to regularly. That could help us guide you towards music that you'd more likely be interested in or willing to give a chance.

Stuff To Try:

Reverend Horton Heat: Great Rockabilly. The stuff is so different from anything you hear on radio today, it's like a breath of fresh air. I used to play "Beer" every week on my radio show in college. Check that out, plus "Bales of Cocaine", "Wiggle Stick", "Where In The World Did You Go With My Toothbrush?"...pretty much anything on the Holy Roller CD.

Liz Phair: Her new album is more pop-oriented than past records, but it was my favorite album of 2003. For older stuff, check out "Fuck and Run", "Blow Job Queen", "Supernova", "Polyester Bride", or anything off her Exile In Guyville disc.

Johnny Cash: Shame on you if you need me to tell you about him. Amazing stuff...all of it. What struck me upon re-discovering him was just how great a sense of humor he has. For starters, try anything on that "Essential" disc that came out not too long ago. Then move onto the prison concert discs (Folsom Prison and San Quentin). And don't ignore anything he did with Rick Rubin producing.

Ska, like rockabilly, is so rarely played on the radio that it's like discovering a new world of great music. The old school stuff (like Selector, English Beat, The Specials, Madness, among others) makes an obvious starting point. But don't forget some newer stuff, like Save Ferris, Reel Big Fish, Dance Hall Crashers (Lockjaw is a permanent fixture in my car), and any compilation discs you stumble over...

Great Big Sea: A Canadian band that plays Irish-inspired folk/rock music. Anything you can find is worth at least one listen, but don't miss out on "Scolding Wife", "Mary Mac", "Boston and St. John's", "The Night That Patty Murphy Died", and "Old Black Rum". If they come to your area, definitely see them live. Trust me, they put on a solid show.

Cowboy Mouth: Rock music the way it should be played. And, like Great Big Sea, they put on an amazing live show. Check out "Love Of My Life", "Jenny Says", and "How Do You Tell Someone?". Actually, try anything (and any album) you can get your hands on. All You Need Is Live is a great starting disc.

There's a decent sampling of different stuff you may want to check out. Most of it doesn't find its way to radio. Which shows just how crappy radio really has become.

Look for a band called Galactic. They're a Jazz/Funk mix. Good stuff.

Son Volt is good Alt. Country. Try looking for some Medicine Hat, St. Genevieve, Windblown, Drown, and Left of Slide.

Look for anything by The Band. The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down, Caledonia, Take a Load Off Fanny, Cripple Creek.

If you like AC/DC, look for a band called Hayseed Dixie. They're a bluegrass band that did an AC/DC tribute album with stuff like Back in Black, Hell's Bells, She Shook Me, and Big Balls, to name a few.

If you like The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin I'd recommend Queen and The Doors to complete the essentials. I also recommend you try stuff by David Bowie: he's tried so many styles there's gotta be at least one of his albums you'll like. There's 26 of them to choose from.
As for more recent stuff, I think a great underrated band from the 90's is Pulp (they started out in the 80's but those albums are shit). From their "Different Class" album on everything' they've done is brilliant.
I liked a lot of the retro bands that came out around 2000, but the only ones that have stuck are The Strokes and The White Stripes. Not everyone likes The Strokes and they've only got two albums, but The White Stripes are the shit (especially if you like raw rock like Led Zeppelin) and they've got four albums, all of them great.

What I've heard of Loretta Lynn's new album is pretty solid, too. Jack White produced and played on it. Elephant's a great album.

I like the white stripes they have some great songs. I have Queen's greatest hits, great stuff. I have the strokes latest album "room on fire" its not too bad. I think the only thing i need is stuff The Doors. As for Bowie, i like "rebel rebel", but dont know which album thats on. I dunno if u guys have checked out "jet" there new album was quite good they vaguely remind me of AC/DC, probably cause there aussies too.

What i really like is rock that rely's heavily on guitar. AC/DC had the raw gutiar sound, Zeppelin was just amazing, and Eddie Van Halen's guitar solos was the major reason i like Van Halen's stuff, just listen to "erruption", that just blew me away.

"Eruption" is some sweet soloing. I prefer the intro to "Mean Streets" m'self. And I think "Fair Warning" and "Women and Children First" are vastly under-rated albums.

For guitar solos, try Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" from Ah Via Musicom (I think that's the album's title), as well as anything with Joe Satriani's name on it (but mostly from the Surfing With The Alien, Flying In A Blue Dream, and The Extremist albums). If you like Black Sabbath, try Soundgarden's "Badmotorfinger" album or early Alice In Chains (two bands I preferred over Nirvana back when I started college in 92/93).

For some reason, "More" by the Sisters of Mercy keeps poppin' in my head. I have it on MP3, but I haven't given it a truckload of thought in a while...

Have you heard of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club? What little I've heard, I've liked.

Rebel Rebel is from the Diamond Dogs album, but it's very different from the rest of the songs. Only the title song (which I recommend) is rocky. You can find similar stuff in the albums Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Scary Monsters and the latest one, Reality. The Man Who Sold The World (the album) is also rocky, but it's more trippy, in a Pink Floyd kinda way.

The ones that made radio play were "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage". Both are good tracks. "Jesus Christ Pose" comes to mind, but nothing on that disc will steer you wrong. I wish I could say the same for their Superunknown album...

About a month ago, we went to see a local band (whose name I've already forgotten) in upstate New York and the club was giving out promo 3 song CDs for Los Diablos to plug their then-upcoming show.

After hearing the CD we ended up journeying back into the club a month later for the Los Diablos show.

Great stuff.

We ended up buying two of their albums that night:"It's A Long And Lonely Time Until The Train Will Bring You Home (2001)" and "The Sheik of Araby (1999)."

My personal favorite song of theirs was "Darling I quit Drinking"

Here's their website, which has links to their music.

If you're interested, it looks like you have to order directly from the band. Amazon doesn't carry them.

Check 'em out.

Funny. I was going to recommend the Reverend, too. Awesome rockabilly. Definitely drink some whiskey and snort a few rails while listening to this band's wailin' flamin' guitar work. unfortunately, the only place to hear him played on air is from college radio, for the most part.

But if you like Reverend Horton Heat, you should also check out the more socially-acceptable music of Junior Brown. He plays this 6-string/steel guitar fusion device that lets him switch between both instruments within half a second, without missing a beat. If you're lucky you can catch him on CMT at like 4 a.m. (don't ask me what I'm doing watching CMT at four in the morning).

On to some other stuff...

Man... Or Astroman? Punk surf rock. Lots and lots of guitar work. Real twangy but still very raw, kind of like Dick Dale on 'roids (I also recommend Dick Dale, the all-time King of Surf Rock.) I think they perform live dressed up like robots or in space-suits or something.

Ozomatli - a multi-cultural fusion of funk, rap, hip hop, jazz, mamba, salsa, mariachi music. There's like 500 of them in the band (which just goes to show you, you hire just one of 'em, you end up hiring all 500 of the rest.)

Portishead - some seriously freaky tripped-out "trip-hop" (I cringe at using the term). Lots of cool scratchy beats and jazz horn samples. And her vocal fx are pretty tweaked.

Joy Electric - the most beautiful, ultra-melodic electronic pop music in the world. Sounds unlike anything you have EVER heard. Trust me. Listening to a Joy Electric CD is like discovering a whole new universe of sounds and musical textures. Joy Electric is in a category of it's own as far as style and sound goes. No one else on Earth is producing music like this. No one.

Ladytron - one of the cooler "electro-clash" bands that came and went a few years ago. Definitely funky, 80's influenced electro, chock full of great big fat synth lines and European-styled vocals.

Les Rhythms Digitales - my all-time favorite DJ. Retro-electro. I can't help it, I love it. The 808 beats, the vocoders, the high-hats and cow-horns. Mmm-mmm, bitch.

Future Bible Heroes/Magnetic Fields - Stephen Merritt (sp?) is one of the coolest, and funniest, musicians in the indie scene. I'm surprised they're not as well known as they should be.

I just came back from checking these guys out again. They returned to do a show in Ithaca, NY.

They're still great. They did some songs I knew and some stuff from their new album. Then the lead singer came over and had a pint or two with me.

Nice guy.

Ksabian and The Arcade Fire have some decent stuff out now. The Tears are also good.
