In the presence of NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and other African-American leaders, comedian Bill Cosby took aim at blacks who don't take responsibility for their economic status, blame police for incarcerations and teach their kids poor speaking habits.
Cosby made his remarks at a Constitution Hall event in Washington Monday night commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision that paved the way for integrated schools, reported Richard Leiby in his Reliable Source column for the Washington Post.
Leiby said Cosby's remarks were met with "astonishment, laughter and applause."
When Cosby finally concluded, Leiby said, Mfume, Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert and NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to the podium looking "stone-faced."
Shaw told the crowd most people on welfare are not African American. He insisted many of the problems his organization addresses among blacks are not self-inflicted.
Cosby said, according to Leiby: "Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids – $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.'
He added: "They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. ... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"
The Post said Cosby also targeted imprisoned blacks.
"These are not political criminals," he said. "These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"

I have no qualms admitting it. Bill Cosby is right. Mostly. The incarceration topic is still very iffy. As if you haven't heard it enough to the point of exhaustion non-Black folk, there are still some African-Americans that are wrongly accused and sentenced. I know I've been multiple times (wrongly accused). My mom was nearly put in jail when she was 12 'cause she resembled Black Panther leader Angela Davis. 12 fucking years old!
Anywho, that's debatable. But when it comes to priorities with money and education, we need to get our shit together.

Where I live, it's just about 50-50 where Latinos and blacks are the ones cops have their eye on, while it's white kids causing a lot of the trouble in Cleveland these days. So yeah, I do think that minorities often draw an unfair amount of attention from the authorities. But that doesn't excuse the crimes that actually are committed. It's just unfortunate that so many innocent people have to suffer from the authorities overreacting to the actions of a much smaller group of individuals.

Take a look at ALL the posts. Aside from one person making an admittedly inappropriate comment, everyone seems to agree with Cosby's message. No one, in any of the more well-reasoned posts, takes any kind of racial swipe. I kept my post intentionally race-vague because Cosby's speech applies to every race. Caucasian, African American, Latin American, etc - every race has a percentage of people who behave in an ignorant, selfish, and stupid manner. Every race has a percentage who use poor English like it's a badge of honor. And every race has a percentage who use the factors that you mention as an excuse to not at least make the attempt to better themselves. And the intention of my racial-vagueness was to avoid a discussion/argument based on someone assigning "racism" to my post. There is none.
If you want to discuss what the factors are that cause the problems Cosby outlines, then, by all means, do so. If you want to argue the validity of Cosby's points, then do so. If you want to criticize a comment the was insensitive and unfunny, go ahead; I won't argue. But don't you dare try to accuse me in your passive-aggressive manner of racism, whomod. You don't have the proof to back it up or the right to make the comment, which is as insensitive and slanderous as the initial "joke". You fucking prick.

I don't give a shit what color a person is. To me they are either a piece of shit or a spare kidney. I don't really have friends I just like to hang with people who have the same blood type as me.
I for one don't think it's fair to just single out black/colored/Americans of African descent/afro-Americans/African-Americans/flavor of the decade terminology that just helps seperate people from people/ when it seems like most of the american youth culture fail to speak anything remotely resembling proper english these days.
Overseas just because of geography most people are fluent in two languages. I'm pritty sure that's a fact. The percentage of people in this country who speak one is most likely frighteningly low.

you are completely misunderstanding. i was talking about whomod attacking people for having the same PoV on the issue. he basically stated his thoughts were the same as everyone elses but noted that we(he implied everyone else) only agreed because it gave us excuse to attack black people. yes there are insults thrown by everyone its the rkmbs but he is so hellbent on attacking anyone who isnt a bush hater he has to attack positions even similar to his own.....

I know some of you enjoy these stories because in yuour minds this somehow gives you carte blanche to unleash your tirades aqnd generalizations about black people under the guise of "well another black person said it first". Still, this hits a new low even for you guys.
I actually agree with his attacks on bad english as it indeed is the gateway into a better life and opportunity. Does this mean that he also condems overcrowded underfunded, and underqualified schools that a lot of these kids attend? Or does this just fall under the 'black people are stupid" category for you all?

Actually, I think G-Man and Dave have more class than to engage in this ugly display here. I may disagree with them on many issues but I can't see them condoning racist crap like using the N word with pleasure and pride.

concerning the original topic (until its untimely, and somewhat predictable tangent) i dont see any posts that are any worse than what you or cosby said. it all seems to depend on how you view them. all of them could be taken in a completely general sense, or an attacking sense, but weren't necessarily made in the latter form. if you already think ill of the poster, then obviously, you'll taint their meaning or intent.
from what i can see, the only blanket generalizations made for that sake are your own about us being racists, or something similar. i'm trying to see your views otherwise, but you make that difficutl.

first off, i think the now-deleted post was bad, and certainly unnecessary. i also find it especially unfair for you to associate with others, especially when most of us didn't even see it.
the second one, however, i don't have as much problem with -- the meaning, at least. thats a break down i've heard quite often, and one i tend to agree with, in principle. there is black and white trash out there, just as there are black and white good people.
the phrasing, and specifically the timing, were poor, that much is clear. and i'm not going to win any gubernatorial elections by "defending" it. but i don't think he meant any harm in saying it.
chris rock has a set of political views i feel are nearly perfect. granted, he's only out for laughs, but his sense of efficient commentary are on a mccainian level. he broke that description down best in the following, paraphrased line:
who is more racist, black people or white people?
black people. y'know why? cuz we! hate! niggers! too!
...later going on to detail how "niggers" are vastly separate from "black people."
the term itself, of course, is extraordinarily sensitive, making any such discussion nearly impossible because of differentiating views on its power or weight or context.
however, personally, i don't feel that agreeing with chris rock's more vulgar breakdown is any worse than agreeing with cosby's more PC breakdown. ... even for a white person.
there's obviously a noticeable problem in place, and one shouldn't be chastized for noticing it.
