Or he was brainwashed. Or mind-controlled. Or it actually was Hal... from another timeline. Or Lord Malvolio. Whatever.
I think in the new Rebirth mini they'll be messing with Emerald Twilight.

"NRAMA: What are your thoughts on Hal Jordan? Were you a fan of him as Green Lantern?

EVS: He's brand new to me. It's only been the past year that I've gone back and read the older stuff, with beautiful art by Neal Adams, and then later Dave Gibbons. And then I went ahead and read Emerald Twilight, and felt what I guess many fans must have felt at the time.

NAMA: Do you think his redemption is needed in the DC Universe?

EVS: I won't say whether I believe a redemption is required for Hal Jordan but more needs to be said about him and what happened to him."

Well that's a relief. For a while I thought permanent changes existed in superhero comics. Look Barry, you're next!

Oh, I forgot to mention. Ethan Van Scvincer (or something), who's drawing Rebirth. I think he also drew Impulse.

But if they wanna "explain" it, they should at least get the best man for the job: Johnny Byrne.

No, but like it or hate it, it happened. If DC backs out of it, they'll be no better than Marvel "Green Goblin's dead, wait no he's not, Aunt May's dead, no that was an impostor, Magneto's dead, no that was some other mutant (Fucking Claremont)" Comics.

For what it's worth, I thought Emerald Twilight was a very good story. It didn't have a happy ending, by all means no, but it really wasn't supposed to. Sometimes, people fuck up, even the best of us, and that's what Emerald Twilight was supposed to convey.

I guess the moral here is- "Whine loud enough and eventually you'll get your way."

The mistake was killing Hal not making him go psycho.

Yeah. Though I thought the death was nicely executed in Final Night. Couldn't have been another way. Where they really, really, REALLY fucked things up was when they turned him into Spectre.

I don't see how. He died a heroic death, he reignited the sun; I actually got teary-eyed when I read The Final Night.

Yeah, I liked that too, but it was the idea of killing him what sucked. So much potential for a cool villain wasted (and for a real believable chance of redemption in life, I should add).

I can see where you're coming from, but how many disasters could Hal start while trying to make things right could writers come up with and it still be interesting?

I'm honestly curious as to how they're going to bring Hal back. They'll probably want to bring him out smelling like a rose and say, like Mxy suggested, that he was brainwashed or it wasn't really him or something, but like I've said on here before that wouldn't make any sense.

Me too, I always liked the story even through all the other fans whining. It was a good new interesting direction, I thought.

I think brainwashing could be plausable. The Lord Malvoio's ring theory comes to mind.

You have to remember that the Spectre Force isn't God/The Presence*, and is only motivated by vengeance.

And you have to remember that Hal's been warping its mission (with his immense willpower), from one of vengeance, into one of redemption (until recently in JSA #60-62)

It's quite possible that when the Spectre Force rejected Jim Corrigan in favor of Hal it was purely because it was drawn by the cries for vengeance from those Hal killed, without God's approval.

Now that Hal has finally released it, God might see that's what happened and give him a second chance.

* The angel Aztar, rather than being relegated to Hell, is sentenced to serve as the Wrath of God — "The Spectre" - by The Presence. (Spectre v3 #60)

That would be AWESOME!

The Hal who went nuts and became Parallax would actually be Hal Jordan from the Pocket Universe, who came into our universe, took over Hal, and made him go nuts. He is also cursed to live out one thousand tragic lives, which explains Hal dying and coming back. In order to save everything, he has to go back in time and become the Golden Age Green Lantern, which will change history so that Hal doesn't turn evil and the Doom Patrol doesn't come into existence until today.

Plus, he'd have a computer.

Man, if you aren't really John Byrne yourself you do one hell of a facsimile.

He ought to hire you as a ghostwriter and retire.

Krona was my idea!

Krona telepathically controlled Hal Jordan. Next he makes Kyle Rayner a bad guy. Next, G'nort is rabid. Then, Arisia becomes a pole dancer, and the JLA start putting dollar bills in her thong strap. Corruption blossoms!

Where do She-Hulk's boobs fit into this plot? They have a starring role in a lot of Byrne's work.

Wasn't thrilled with the way they got rid of him, but to me the thing that I like about the GL mythos (and consequently the problem with the way they relaunched it with Rayner) is that they are are essentially a police force. Sometimes one falls and someone takes his place. Bringing Jordan back seems pointless to me. They should be looking to take a step forward.

But then I like the Hal as Spectre idea (though it wasn't very well executed), so what do I know?
