Half-Life 2 headed to arcades...in Japan

TOKYO--Taito today announced that it has signed an agreement with Valve Software to release Half-Life 2 in arcades. It will run on Taito's new arcade hardware, which is called the TypeX. Given the title's strong name recognition, Taito hopes to release the arcade version worldwide, and it is currently slated for a summer 2005 release.

As GameSpot reported from the Amusement Machine show this past September, Taito's TypeX board is based off the architecture of an ATX IBM-compatible PC. Since the hardware is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the PC format and uses the Windows XP Embedded operating system, PC games can be ported to the platform with great ease. TypeX cabinets come standard with AGP Radeon 9200SE (128MB) graphics cards that can be upgraded to X800XT cards, if required.

Taito's arcade release of Half-Life 2 will be a customized version of the upcoming PC release. Currently, three modes have been announced. You can enjoy the game alone in the story mode, or you can team up with players in other arcades, via network connection, to play cooperatively. And, of course, there's a versus mode where you can fight against players in other arcades as well. Furthermore, you’ll be able to enjoy the game on a wide screen and in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound.

My brother and I visited the arcades in Southend last Sunday (you can read about it as soon as I've finished writing the article). Overall it was a depressing experience. There were no new machines and all the old ones were broken.

Porting popular console and PC titles to run on quality coin-op machines could be a way of reviving interest in arcade gaming.

Arcades: They're overpriced, the games haven't kept pace with developments in console and PC technology and the places along the golden mile in Southend are always full of shady characters. Regardless of all that I still enjoy going occassionally. I think that it's partly to do with nostalgia - I remember when arcade machines had far superior graphics to anything you could get on a home entertainent system and I have fond memories of bunking off P.E. in the afternoon with my friends and all of us crowding around four player Guantlet.

I'm hoping the Half Life coin-op will set a precedent for quality arcade machines because recently that part of the industry seems to have given up. I haven't seen anything new that's excited me for a long time.

Seems like the only way to rejuvinate the arcade market is to rethink the way arcades are made. If I were to make an arcade I'd restructure it as more of a PC LAN CyberCafe. Charge for time played and run online games like shooters or RPGS. The only coin-ops I would invest in would be stuff you couldnt get at home: Foozball, air hockey, light gunners, and those rhythym games. Arcades really need to evolve with the times if they plan on avoiding extinction.

Places like Dave & Busters and Gameworks have success despite their high prices. There's another place near me (Enchanted Castle) that used to have wall to wall arcades. Now if they aren't crappy ticket games they're shoot 'em ups. The older Mortal Kombat games, including 3, seem to be non-existent. Laser Tag and Mini-golf help bring kids in, otherwise the place is a dump. Its saving grace is the nickel arcade and the kid's Jungle Gym. I miss the good ol' days.

I have yet to see one of these mothers.

I'd type more, but I just got done jacking off to a Jenna J clip, and can only use one hand. (Too lazy to go to the bathroom)

Thanks.

The nickel arcade has been removed.

I'm stuck with D&B now.

And my emulator!
