This may mean a 2005 release date, but with just 3 months left this seems doubtful (but definitely in the realms of possibility). This is more likely a release date for 2006.
Other possibilities include that February 9th could be the official announcement of Bungie's next project or the first wave of downloadable content for Halo 2. Bungie has expressed that Halo 3 will not be its next project yet this released date does leave some speculation...
Having only completed the game on Heroic I'm unable to verify this news, but it doesn't seem beyond the realms of plausability, especially for a company that has such excellent marketing as Bungie.

It will most likely be downloadable content. There is no way they are going to release a new game by that date.
EDIT: They will probably have downloadable content to the players who beat it on this difficulty. Hell, maybe even a new ending. Has anyone tried changing the date to Febuary 9th on their X-box control panel, then beating it again?

Similar to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It says online capable on the box, but that is only because you can download additional camo for your character to your memory card.

For the last couple of months there have been rumours that the date appeared on completion of the game, something that has captured the attention of Halo 2 Live! gamers disappointed with never-ending Capture the Flag on Zanzibar (and Bill Murray thought that he had it bad in Groundhog Day.)
In their weekly news update, Bungie has now officially said that, “The whole February 9th thing is bogus. Some kid claimed (in spite of evidence to the contrary) that halo 2's end credits featured Feb. 9th as a mysterious date. They did not in fact contain that date. Somebody simply made it up. Nothing particularly special is going to happen on February 9th.”
So that’s the end of that or so it seems, we’ll still be keeping an eye out for anything that does happen on Wednesday, and let you know.

An anti-climax, rather like the game itself. Given that this rumour has been floating around for some time, it's strange that Bungie have only just officially denied it.
