What do you think is the best age for kids to be taught about sex? This is for the experienced parents and the non.
Also, if you remember, how old were you when your parents taught you about the birds and the bees? If you learned some other way, when and how?

IMHO, there is no set age. It depends on the kid and the maturity that he/she brings to the situation. Both our kids knew about the biology of procreation by age 10.
I don't recall "the talk" with either of my parents.

My parents never talked to me about sex, or womenn, or anything. I learned the biology from school sex ed, but I think my parent's reticence to discuss such things with me contributes greatly to my current status with women -- very, very single, with nary a clue how to deal with them despite all my best wishes to the contrary...

I don't intend to have a one time sit down with my kids. I think it'll be little lessons over time. When my kids ask me where babies come from I don't plan on telling them it was the stork or from a cabbage patch. I'll just say that mommy and daddy make the baby and it grows in mommy sort of thing. I'll fill in the details later.

I think the best way is to have sex in front of your kids. That way they will know the mechanics, and they will be horrified to have sex until they're much older.

That's the way we started out with it, too. It's perfectly reasonable.
Eventually, they may ask how the baby gets in there, and you go from there...you'll know what your kids are ready to hear.

my parents started talking about it with me before I was 5 years old, the age I first asked about it. They've never lied or hid anything from my little brother or myself.

Jim put it well, it depends on maturity. But if I had to pick an age, I'd say 12 or 13.

I never got "the talk." My mom taught Lamaze class at the hospital for about 7 years, during which time I was, myself, born. So she had books and charts and posters and stuff... I don't remember a time in my life where I didn't know about sex.

If you've got a daughter, I think you've got to talk about it with her sooner than that, though, in most cases. Girls mature sooner and so you daughter may have her period before she's 12. She's got to have some clue why she gets it.
