DC is older and thus has a more adult feel. In your mind maybe.

Not just in my mind, but, in reality. DC came first, and practically invented the superhero comic book. DC begats Vertigo, which also begats WIldstorm. These two imprints have done more for adult-style themes and storytelling in comics than anything Marvel has ever produced. That's of course not counting the landmarks of DKR and Watchmen, or even Crisis (the only mainstream comic event that ever lived up to what it promised). Marvel has never taken these steps, content to go with whatever is in current fashion. Thus, it gives their books a dated feel a year after they are produced, whereas DC characters have a more iconic quality. No more, no less.

Quote:

DC sucked in the 70's. DC was sooooo bad Marvel is where it is today thanks to that simple fact! Big time!

I'm quite sure where you are pulling your facts. It might be of an opinion that the Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams GL/GA stories of the 70's had just as much, if not more of a social-themed impact than anything Marvel put out at the time. But, as far as what "sucked", well, that's left to speculation and sheer opinion. Not "fact". "Big time".

Quote:

If Marvel is such a moment trend for kids then why the All Star line at DC?

I'm not quite sure I understand the implication of your point. If you are saying that All-Star DC is an answer to Marvel's Ultimate line, then, I would probably agree with you. However, the crux of my point was based in the fact that Marvel's mainstream books, as well the creative path their entire line (historically) takes, is derived from the whatever is current and trendy. The Ultimate line is designed to hopefully bring in a new generation of readers. As well it should. And, as well as All-Star should. But, this really doesn't do anything to help make your point (assuming you have one).

Quote:

Maybe Marvel wants to save comic books for future generations to enjoy... This is a fantastic art form to tell stories. That is ALL it is.

Agreed. But, how does this imply that DC does not? And, at what point has anyone said that they didn't? And, how does this relate to the original part of my post that you quoted?

Quote:

This is why people whom LOVE comics do not get it! If we want to see comic books continue we need NEW fans. Younger fans.

I think lump-summing all people who "love" comics into a catagory that is not as "enlightened" as you seem to think you are, does a great disservice to your point, and, to fans in general. Some understand the needs of the industry as a whole, some do not. But, assuming you are the only one that "gets it" is presumptious, and nullifies your argument.

Quote:

While I, as a comic fan, love the new Batman movie it does not create new fans.

Really? I find that interesting that you are cosmically aware of such a generalized "fact". I personally know at least 10 people that have become interested in comics books due solely to the movie Batman Begins. Half of those same people found the FF movie to be laughable and silly. Thus, my original point, apples and oranges. It's all in your preference.

Quote:

The Marvel movies are doing the work the DC movies aren't. They are getting the comics on the big screen.

Oh, for certain that this has been the age of Marvel movies. And, you know, about time really. I find it amusing that certain opinionated fans use your above statement as some type of superior stance, all the while forgetting that DC beat them to the cinema by about...I don't know...twenty-years. By the time Marvel put out quality flicks (and no doubt, the Spider-Man, Blade, and X-Men franchises are quality movies) DC had already given us two of cinema's biggest box office successes in the medium, and created classics that defined their decades (the original Superman: The Motion Picture and 1989's Batman). That's not even counting their sequels.

So, yes, Marvel has created some really good movies. And, DC has as well. But, again, attempting to say that one is inherently better than the other is, as I originally stated, ludicrous.

Quote:

There's a reason DC has started their All Star line. Marvel. Period.

And there's a reason Marvel created Fantastic Four. It was called the Justice League. There's a reason they created the X-Men. It was called the Doom Patrol. There's a reason they created Sentry. It's called Superman. And the list goes on and on and on and on and on. So, really, trying to lay the base of your point on the idea that DC created the All-Star line because of Marvel is rather pointless, wouldn't you agree?

Making comparisons is easy. Creating quality concepts, characters, books, and movies? That's hard...

These two books were in simultaneous development in 1963. All indications are that it genuinely was coincidence.

Besides, DP is by far more an analog of the FF than the X-Men.

They had to go through the whole origin and everything this movie. You can't expect too much individual character development in the first flick when you have five main characters to focus on. You'd either focus on 2 or 3 and leave the others out --just like the X-Men movies-- or you'd rush it and make the story sloppy.

You can, it just depends what else you insist on doing. Character development suffered because the producers had 5 characters to deal with in a summer popcorn type movie.

My comments on the movie:

1. I liked it.
2. It made me laugh.
3. It made me appriciate those older comics Grimm recommended about six months ago. I 'got' the reason why everyone appeared to have such random powers. It was more like a reflection of their inner character, and all that other deep sounding stuff.
4. I figured the storyline was going to be somewhat simple, mainly because it was the introduction for everyone. I was cool with that.
5. Don't laugh, but I liked this more than the first Spiderman and X-men movies. I have to admit -- four is a nice round number. I can't keep track of everyone in the X-men movies, and Spiderman had a habit of beating it's theme (yes I get it...with great power and all that crap...).
6. I felt like the movie retained the whole 'family' thing. Actually, Sue and Johnny pretty much were based on me and my brother.
7. Ioan Gruffudd and Julian McMahon were hot. Heck, I'll give points to Jessica Alba as well, and I'm really not into that sort of thing. Is that a shallow reason for liking any movie? Yeah. But hey, nice to see Gruffudd in something where he's not on a boat wearing leggings. And It was nice seeing McMahon not playiung an evil, shallow doctor...actually, forget I said that...

My favorite comic book character is a DC character. That being said, I hate to back up Mr. fuckin Lesbo of all people, but this board is definitely filled with a bunch of muthafuckin DC clowns.

What do you expect from a forum where a large bulk of the membership are leftovers and rejects from the DCMB? Seems like a DC bias comes standard.

As to the future of comics. I say the key is the 15 - 25 age group. You hook them & the younger crowd will naturally follow. Them highschool & college dudes like it, so it must be cool. Just like cigs, alcohol, boobies, etc. Works every time.

Cheers!

I enjoyed it.
It was a decent comic book movie, if it would have been first, I would have enjoyed it more.
I think my biggest complaint is that Doom and Richard Reeds looked exactly alike and were overshadowed by Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm. They should have gotten better actors for the two lead roles.

The Thing and the Torch were easily the best part of the movie. They were perfect. The rest ranges from mediocre to poor.

The effects were good, but the script was awful.

Gruffud was decent, but had no chemistry with anyone else. Jessica Alba was just a pair of boobs. Nice boobs, but little else. There ain't no acting there.

Doom sucked. Big time. These jerkasses just do not get one of the best villains ever created? WTF? You want to see how to do Doom correctly? Watch the original Star Wars films. Vader IS Doom. Period. (and that's a rare moment of praise for Lucas from me)

I hate to tell you, but she's not worth it. Save yourself.

Grimm pretty much summed it up. That's exactly what we were both saying after seeing that garbage. Ben and Johnny . The rest of the movie . You'd think that with a Fantastic Four movie that they'd have Dr. Doom as the villian. Instead, we get some pussy in a Doom costume. I think that Julian McMahon is obviously a Doom-bot with gay programing.

I think they fully understood the dysfunctional family aspect of the FF, but only two actors were able to pull it off. Chiklis and Evans were Grimm and Johnny Storm. They made that fucking movie. Everyone else is just floundering off on the side like a fish that's jumped out of its tank and landed on the carpet. No connection at all. Alba and Gruffud didn't make me believe that they were in love at any time. McMahon seemed to convey anger on the scale of "You just ate the cupcake in my lunchbox," rather than the Dr. Doom level of "FUCK YOU, RICHARDS! YOU RUINED MY FUCKING LIFE! I'M GOING TO TAKE YOUR MALLEABLE HEAD AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR RUBBER ASS!" anger.

I did like the bridge scene. The FX were cool. The action was pretty quick paced. I do have to question in story logic of Sue turning invisible and stirpping on the bridge to get past the cops (I perfectly well understand any logic that has Jessica Alba strippin' down to her undies). She goes through all that to get past the cops, yet Reed and Johnny (who can't turn invisible, btw) meet her on the other side.

To sum it up: Shit plot. Shit acting, with the exception of Ben and Johnny. Good FX. At least one good action scene. Save your money. Find a bootleg to watch like I did.
