Would anyone here say that they are to any degree racist, homophobic or prejudiced against a particular social group?
I don’t mean that you look forward to going out queer bashing, or are signed-up member of the KKK, or take every opportunity to spit on Muslims. What I mean is do you have the kind of prejudice that is just a part of your personality – the kind that you may even find unreasonable or unfounded and yet you still feel it?
Have you ever been prejudiced and either taken steps to overcome it or somehow had your opinion changed?
This isn’t the thread to go pointing the finger at other people.

Honestly, yes. Deep down, I can't say that I hold everyone in the same esteem. There are groups of people for whom my initial gut feeling is that of contempt. It's a constant situation where I have to double check the motivations behind my opinions when dealing with others...'Do I genuinely disagree, or is my opinion responding to a bias?'
When I look back on my life, I can see that some of these opinions are the result of opinions held by my parents (racial biases). These are not so hard to ignore. Others (class and aesthetic biases) are my own. These I find require dilligence to constantly keep in check. This is perhaps why I try to reason with homophobes before I will attack thier dogma. They are responding to ingrained behavioral patterns rather than logic, as I am inclined to do when I am presented a case by or for a group of people that offend my own sensebilities.

I hate everyone equally, with the exception of two groups. I can't stand people that have a higher GPA even though they party all day, and I can't stand people who feel when they should think.

Another thing I judge people on is how they act in public. Since I ride the bus I hear all kinds of really horrible things about people that I don't want to hear and they really need to keep to themselves.

racist, no...prejudiced, yes. I grew up in southern Ohio with people saying the N word all day and talking all kinds of goofy things. As much as I judge people on their actions I still find myself thinking weird things when I don't want to. Mostly when I'm driving , of course. I will think or say, learn how to drive "n*****" or "S***"...that kind of stuff. I know I don't believe it, but I think it and blurt it out in stressful situations...
So, I'm guilty and admit it...

I lived in Dayton (82-92) when I went to elementary and middle school. I don't think I ever had a teacher straight out say that white people are better than black people, but I remember them saying that they are different. I also had a black teacher tell us that we should treat black people better than white people because of everything they went through. It was also socially unacceptable for whites and blacks to hang out together. I'm really glad I don't live there anymore.

It boils down to getting to know people as people. Anyone can see someone as an other, but whne you get to know and like someone as a human being it changes your perspective...as much as possible barring 32 years of racist talk from peers and elders.

When middle friends of mine say stuff about people just because they are working class and get on a middle class high horse, I get really pissed off, even if the people in question are arseholes, because I hate the British class division.
I think I kind of have a thing against the British middle classes due to an incredible smugness. Which is silly because I am one of them.
It may just be because my parents read the Daily Mail though!

I said that it was beneath my dignity. What I mean by that is that I don't want to be prejudiced.
We're all humans, and by default we're all prejudiced against something.
