or do you believe that an eye for an eye isn't justification?

"Eye for an eye" is an inherently flawed philosophy that can never be considered any sort of justification. I would partake of it though.

not necessarily.

the only time i could ever envision myself killing someone would be in defense of my family or loved ones. i'd not avenge myself by killing someone else, but, say, a sister of mine?

depending on the circumstances, that'd be something i might do.

No, but with the condition I leave you in you'll welcome death when it comes.

The only way I could see killing someone out of revenge is if someone did something unspeakable to my nephews or little sister.

if the situation were dire enough, "law" is not something i'd even consider.

"morals," perhaps. "ramifications," maybe -- referring moreso to the mental and emotional consequences of myself and my family, rather than, say, jail time.

if ever i was so moved and/or distraught to even consider killing, the concept of "law" would not register for even a moment.

What I meant by this was that, while I am sure I would want to, I realize I have no right to take the law into my own hands for revenge and, everything comic books have told me aside, this is why we have police, judges, etc. Otherwise, we descend into chaos and anarchy.

something i agree and hold to.

now.

but if i'm ever in a situation where i'm even contemplating killing someone? the logistics of law and standardized policing are long since removed from my mind.

But, Rob, once you make that jump, you're essentially admitting that the law against murder, and pretty much one of the central tenets of human morality, is there only so long as you find it convenient to obey.

not fully, no.

to play out a full scenario, say someone did something unspeakable to a sister of mine -- something so extreme that i am enraged to a murderous pitch. if i do, in fact, murder in this instance, i'd hold myself accountable to the laws set in place.

"taking the law into my own hands," to me, would involve ignoring the law entirely. i.e; i'd commit a crime, then think myself not responsible to fit the punishment.

i wouldn't do that.

if i were ever in a situation where i commit a murder, i'd readily accept the penalty that the laws set in place.

I agree with Rob. If I ever found it necessary to kill/murder somebody in cold blooded revenge, I would just off em. I would turn myself in, get myself the best lawyer I could get myself, and take whatever punishment the court handed down.

i could even see myself skipping the "best lawyer" part. i'd want a fair trial, but i wouldn't look to work my way out of anything, with a kobe-trial-like lawyer team.

i'd simply accept the responsibility for what i had done.

Yeah, I have to agree somewhat with klinton, Rob.

It's not uncommon for people to break the law, honestly believing they won't fight the charges, but as soon as they spend a day or two contemplating a long stretch in the big house, they suddenly want the right to a full and fair jury trial.

It's just a natural reaction.

heh.

well, i'm not in the situation, so i can't give a totally honest response.

however, based on what i know of myself, and based on the extreme to which i've already taken the theoretical situation (to the extent i'd actually be killing someone), i think its a pretty fair assessment.

i wouldn't want to go to jail. i wouldn't want to give up my freedom.

but if such a situation ever arose, i imagine it'd be more than worth it, and i'd be content with that.

...not to mention the overwhelming guilt and emotional hurt i'd no doubt suffer, both for my crime and the initial event that started it all.

I'd kill someone with no hint of remorse if the person deserved it!
And by that,I mean deserved it in my eyes!
I dont care whether I'd get caught or not because if I killed someone I'd be well past caring about myself at that point!

I did try to run someone over once, but they moved!

So would I. I have several on the list (albeit they're across the country, and I'm in no state to hnt them down) that I'd kill or leave wanting death if I ever came across. But I'll be damned if I wouldn't fight the legal process after the fact. Thier sins don't deserve to rob me of my freedom.

which part?

the situation is already being taken to the limits, as a scenario in which i'd actually kill someone would be pretty damn dire. imagining something that extreme is supposing a lot.

but, say we're there. say it happened. if something ever was that dire, that extreme, killing those responsible would be something i can project myself doing.

assuming, afterward, i ever return to something resembling my current self, then yes, i'd be willing to accept the punishment for my actions.

i don't, at all, think thats being unreasonable.

I wouldn't kill for revenge. I would torture them, keep them alive in my basement long enough for most traces of their wounds to heal, and then they would have an "accident." A really, really bad accident.

No, i wouldn't either.

Not only is it legally wrong, but also morally wrong as well.

Despite whatever power/revenge fantasies we may entertain at the moment.

With all due respect, when you write violent nonsense like that, it's hard to feel sorry for you when you say that your probation officer wants to incarcerate you.

It was a JOKE, damn it!

In all actuality, it depends on the severity of the situation. Something of high monetary value... no, I wouldn't kill for revenge for something like that. I'd possibly severely injure them, but I wouldn't kill 'em.

Listen, PCG, I'm serious about this.

When you write stuff like that, it makes me think that, maybe, in dealing with your PO and therapist, you give off a vibe that you are violent or WOULD injure people.

Not a good thing in your position.

Ah, but I don't. My therapist and I get along spectacularly. Hell, I haven't really said much to the PO, but I get your point. It's kind of like my jokes about assassinating Courtney Love, firing a Carl Gustav at Oakley, etc.
