I flipped through this book on the way home today...It looks like shit. Do I give a rat's ass about Beetle? No. Do I want to read 80 pages of him running around? Not so much. Does Wonder Woman (the only hero I really follow) have anything to do with this story besides showing up on a computer screen, sporting a shit rendition on the cover, and being present for Beetle's 'we all love her' crap. No, again. I think I wasted a buck thirty-five (Canada! Where everything is more bloody expensive!).

You know, it just seems to me that, if a character isn't working out, a smart publisher could just, I dunno, stop using the character for a while, instead of killing him or her off, thereby leaving the character alive for a future writer, with potentially more talent, to bring him or her back.

Instead, we are subjected, month after month, to mini-series that kill the characters off.

Is that supposed to be creativity--telling the same, morbid story over and over?

All I'm saying is that I'm glad DC didn't create me... or I'd have been dead last year. Happy 20th Birthday, Blue Beetle!

Anyway, this book was mildly enjoyable. I might even pick up a couple of the spin-off minis. Maybe. If I do, it'll be OMAC and VU as I really don't care about magic in the DCU or Adam Strange.

But, then again, I'm a poor college student (soon to be a poor college graduate), so I'll prolly not pick up either of them...

I thought it was quite enjoyable myself.

The tone of the book reminded me of the Invasion mini actually.

My only complaint is this:

Ever since DC aquired the Charlton characters, Blue Beetle has been criminally underused and idiotically portrayed as some comic releif.

So finally a book rolls around that explores the untapped potential of the character and what happens? They build him up simply to tear him down.

What a waste.

Still, it's DCU death. Which means with the mystical scarab,he could simply return in time for "infinite Crisis".

I read this book and really liked it. I'll miss BB, but this was a very well written book that explores the DCU through his eyes and mind. It made him important in a universe that made him a laughing stock. A good read.

spoilers......

anyway...Beetle gave the wizard the scarab so that means reincarnation as the kingdom come version, or a 3rd beetle....I wish they would have offed booster but that wouldn't have made sense...atleast they will be dealing with identity crisis and Batman in the following months..which is good.

plus they will be amping up their goofy villains to be serious threats and a divided JLA won't be able to stop them..I think it's intriuging and I'll miss beetle a severely untapped character that was unfortunately redundant around Batman...I think that's what it boils down to..you can't be an important Batman type character when batman is around unless you are nightwing or robin..ask the question , the shadow or anyone else...

I liked it. Good read at a good price. Plus, it made me want to read at least two, maybe three, of the mini-series that are coming out. I wasn't planning on picking up the Rann/Thanagar War...now I'll be picking that up as well as the Adam Strange series when it's collected.

I'll get Villians United for sure. I like what's been done with Lex, I really want to see a Superboy/Superman/Luthor confrontation. I'll probably get OMAC since it probably will have more to do with Infinite Crisis. I don't care much for the other two, though I'll look at them to see how they fit in the grand scheme of things.

I think DC did address why Blue Beetle wasn't going to work in the DCU. He'd been turned into a joke. He was too close to Batman to really move out on his own. They needed a Blue Beetle who returned to the mystical origin of the original; but Ted could really, character wise, fit the bill for that. He was too science based to accept the magic of the scarab.

I think DC gave him a grand send off. A very well written story with good artists and writers. 80 pages to shine. A display that he wasn't the joke that everyone made him out to be. And to make sure everyone read it, DC slapped a Lee/Ross cover with a $1 price on it.

Personally, I'm already getting tired of the "take a character from the old Justice League, make her/him endearing to the reader, then kill him/her off" first issue formula. I can see it getting overused rather quickly.

Other than that, I liked this story.

Let's face it, if you're going to kill a second or third tier character that no one is using, odds are that he/she was part of the Justice League at some point in time.

I think Booster will get a push because of this, and I'm sure we'll get the kingdom come style beetle-or something similar..

We'll always have those old jli issues..they don't fit in modern DC context anymore though...

max lord is going to be a badass as well....

But they do. What I like about how DC is running now and what Metzler in particular with ID Crisis and his Green Arrow run is that he didn't discount the Silver Age or old stories. Instead, he put a new spin and context on them. There was even a cover to Fomerly Known As in Booster's file as a pic of his associates. My favorite line out of this book was Lord's, "I kept the Justice League ineffectual for years."

I'm sorry..I meant they don't fit in the sense that the DCU is serious now..not light hearted.. there is no place for that league anymore..unless the characters change...and in light of Lord's revelation and explanations it all makes sense...

But even that's become the new cliche: the grand send off of a character with something of a retroactive sheen of importance.

You realize that you are talking about comic books, corporate run comic books, right?

We saw the first efforts to make the brilliant JLI era seem stupid an irrelevant in the mid-90's, after Jurgens' JLA run. Jurgens was actually the one appointed with the task of "making the JLA serious again", but he did it with consequence and respect to Giffen and company. He did it gradually, too, beginning with more action-based stories featuring the same characters and the same personalities, and ending with a completely different League, using Superman's death as the moment when the League changed and making his funeral seem like the JLI's funeral too.

Then it became cool to contrast how "stupid and ridiculous we used to be" and how "cool and extreme we are now": examples from this era are Max Lord turning into the villain Lord Havock, Ice's useless death, and a character as harmless as L-Ron turning into a brutal powerhouse by taking over Despero's body.

With Morrie's JLA the group actually had good stories and didn't have to focus on comparing itself to its past to seem relevant, but that's changed. I think that what we're seeing right now is basically the same thing we saw in the mid-90's, except "cool and extreme" is replaced with "dark and tragic". "Look how stupid and ridiculous we used to be, and how dark and tragic we've become," seems to be the message.

I think DC should start using that "DC COMICZ AINT JUST FO KIDZ, YO!" logo they had in the 80's. That would be approapiate.
