OK, im reading the early issues of Jim lee's WildCATS from the Image early days, and liking it

Questions--

1] Any other decent Image titles from back in the day? I was thinking of things like Gen13, Grifter, Backlash, Stormwatch etc.... but related opinions are partially welcomed, depending how on topic and sane they are

2] Stormwatch. From the Jim Lee early days to the final days under Warren Ellis. Am i missing anything by not picking them up? How many issues did all these runs go on for?

3] Liefield and Silvestri went on to make the companies Awesome Entertainment and Top Cow. They ever publish anything anygood?
When'd Liefield and Awseome go out of business?

4] How come the Spawn cartoon was so perfect with its plots, violence language and blood, while the comic was patheticly written filth?

I recently discovered the original Stormwatch series, and I'm liking it (and I also enjoy WildC.A.T.s) I've heard Shadowhawk is pretty good as well, and eventually I'll get around to buying some Shadowhawk comics. Savage Dragon is great for sex and violence, but not so much for serious storytelling.

Sam Kieth's The Maxx came out in the time frame you're asking about. It's some trippy, fun stuff and DC Comics is releasing the entire series in TPB form. It's not standard capes 'n' cowls but, if you're looking for something a bit different, it's well worth your time.

i think that the Spawn cartoon owed its quality to the fact that the stories were being put together by people with a little bit of experience and some writing ability telling the stories while Spawn the comic was being put together by Todd Mcfarlane.

that being said, my 14 year old self loved the first 20 issues or so of Spawn where things seemed really new and exciting and anything could happen. after those 20 issues or so it became obvious that that wasn't the case.

The Maxx was great. MTV made some of it into a cartoon.

I liked the first ten or so issues of Witchblade.

Other than that, it is pretty grim pickings.

I found much of early Image incomprehensible at the time, and I still do. The name "Image" says it all -- they were all about the art, and not so much about the writing. I read comics for the stories first and the art second, so I didn't enjoy them too much (though I did pick up a few of the earliest issues of SPAWN and SAVAGE DRAGON and remember them as being fun to look at -- and YOUNGBLOOD was crap through-and-through). Plus, other than Larsen and McFarlane at the time, I didn't like any of the other Image artists.

The Maxx, eh? I'll find out more and most likely get some issues to check it out. Sounds like it was an ongoing from 'Mama's words......?

Reading issue #9 of WildCATS earlier today and there was an advert in it for a legitimate CATS cartoon. Did the show fall through, or what?

No, it was produced and it was aired, but it only lasted one short season:

Maxx lasted about 37 issues, so figure six TPBs, with teh first four already out.

What was with the stupid creator owned crap that ran abundant through Image? did they really think that everyone owning a few characters would actually work out? They had a close sense of continuity in the early days, but then when everyone split the universe really fell apart. It was like getting the JLA and saying they couldnt meet any other heroes and that most of the villains were gone. It would have been better if Darkness, The Authority, The Coven etc. were all running around the same world
