DC RAISES PRICES ON SIX DCU TITLES

Today DC Comics used their weekly email newsletter to retailers to serve notice that they have raised the prices on their last remaining DC Universe $2.25 titles. Beginning with their June issues, Batman, Nightwing, Robin, The Flash, JLA and Wonder Woman will arrive in stores with a new retail price of $2.50. Because they were solicited in both June and July with the previous cover price of $2.25, DC reported the affected issues will be announced as returnable at a later date.

The cover price change comes on the heels of Marvel’s elimination of their $2.25 price point on nine titles also beginning with issues on sale in June.

DC has not eliminated their $2.25 price point entirely, however. Their “Johnny DC” titles, including Justice League Unlimited, Batman Strikes and Teen Titans Go (among others) currently remain at $2.25.

Additionally, DC announced that 100 Bullets (with issue #62) and The Books of Magick: Life During Wartime, Fables, and Lucifer will have their price raised from $2.50 to $2.75, the latter three with their June on-sale issues.

Mad Magazine will arrive in stores with a cover price of $3.99 beginning with issue #454.

It's not going to stop me from buying JLA. I'll just trim down what little I'm collecting.

I preorder online at 35% off discount. Unless it's a prestige-format, or something like DC: New Frontier, I'm still getting my books for under $2 each, max. DCBS runs alot of specials at 50-75% off cover price, too... alot of times it's on new stuff I wouldn't have tried otherwise.

In that case, good luck collecting anything from DC.

Time for my cranky old man rant, but I remember getting royally pissed off when DC went from 48 pages for a quarter to 32 pages for thirty cents.

last year I remember someone did the math for inflation of a quarter comic since 1970 and said they shouldn't be more than $1.50 or so

Did they say why they were raising the prices? Better paper, color writing? Aren't they expensive enough already?

Ridiculous.

Dear, sweet Harley Kwink...I'm madly in love with you. Marry me! We can go to Canadia. Or Boston or something. It'll be grand...You know the cookies are a given. They are ALWAYS a given. You could dump me tomorrow and you'd still get the cookies. Boston..shit, wherever dyke weddings were legalized. And where better to rub their little piggie noses in how bad they suck than right on their doorstep? What are they gonna do? Be jealous of you? Stare furiously at your tah-tahs? Not willingly give you cookies, but instead begrudgingly give you their cookies? Woman, time to wake up to the powers you wield - Uschi

No me diga....any other reason...? Seriously.

Don't they usually have some excuse - rising prices of ink or some such crap that at least attempts to justify this bullshit increase?

Dont they realise that upping price pisses off fans, gets them to drop titles, and basically just pisses all over an already ridiculed and somewhat taboo industry? Do these fuckers really see any long term stake in raising the prices, because comics are already pretty shit when you consider the price and the amount of actual story where get lumped with in each issue [especially with Marvel/DC and their de-compression]

Everytime they up, i just look at my collection list and decide to throw one of the bullshit titles i get off, simple as that! Its not the money, i think i get mine at the same place Poverty Boy does [Boy, Lad, they're all the same thing], its just the fact that these fat cat whino's think they can exploit an already dwindling fanbase

Mark Miller predicted all this in a Ultimes2 interview last year, he said the raised prices would crush the industy and we'd end up with a new line where the artist once again takes the fore-front over the writer

"Now TV's all about format these days isn't it, and I've got a new type for you right here. Its me and Paris Hilton driving around in a car.... Now I know what you're thinking, but she's in the boot!" "So you see, 'Ring around the Rosey' refers to the horrible symptoms of a terrifying disease, a disease which.....a disease which....ZIM! Theres a Pigeon on you're head. You have 'Head Pigeons'. get to the Nurse before they spread to the other children." "Get off my lawn Cookie Beast!" --Invader Zim

what do you expect after the image creators almost wrecked the industry in the early '90's. all the super star fan boy crap at that point created huge salaries for comic creators much like you see in todays pro sports. and "we the fans" ate that shit up. i've got the balls to say "i'm guilty".

The other problem here is that both companies, but perhaps DC moreso these days, is driven less by a desire to attract new fans and more by a desire to exploit the ever dwindling number of existing ones.

Let's face it: the companies figure there's just enough people who won't give up "collecting" that they can keep raising prices without suffering a drop in profit.

Basic law of supply and demand, as long as the demand remains relatively constant with an increased price, there is no reason not to increase the price.

This is the reason I have only two books on my pull list anymore. It's getting bloody ridiculous when I can pick up two books in a month and pay $10 bucks (Cdn.). These crossover events (like the 'Infinity Crisis') just piss me off now...whereas they used to excite me. I hate having only bits of the story in my collection...but I'll be damned if I'm going to spend hundreds of dollars to read every tie in.

And, of course, the problem is compounded by the trend of "superstar" artist to do every third or so page as a "splash" or even double-page spread, meaning that it takes even less time than ever to read the books.

I remember when it would take 20 minutes to read a comic book.

Yeah, the Death of Superman comics were that way. Azz/Lee's Superman issues took 5 minutes to read. There are still some gems out there though...I'm just not buying them right now.

i don't pick up the crossover books. if the ones i do collect fall into a crossover fine. i will pick up a mini series if i think i'll enjoy it. i'll follow the crisis mini series. screw getting all the tie in books. if the need exists to buy the crossover issues to make the mini series worth getting then i'll stay away from all of it. i'll NEVER do that again.

Starting August I am switching to DCBS since the price of comics is getting too high even for me. All of August's books through them cost the same amount I would pay in one week of getting books through my LCS. That is a hell of a deal. This way, even though I am also cutting back on books, I don't have to cut back too much.
