What are the actors and actresses who, when their names are attached to projects, you automatically get excited about the film? Who are some of the people who have delivered the performances who made you laugh, cry, gasp, scream, or some bizarre amalgamation of the above? Heck, who are the ones you just like to look at onscreen?

Make separate lists for actors and actresses... or, if you can't think of enough, simply combine the two. Give some explanations as to why each choice made your list.

There are few actors/directors who I really give a damn about enough to watch a movie based on their involvment alone.

Tim Robbins
Guy Pierce
Christopher Nolan
Kevin Spacey
Michael Cane (based on his last few movies)

Kate Winslet..because she is a talented goddess
Salma Hayek...mostly just the eye candy
Gretchen Mol...she's cute and talented, and doesn't work that much
Emma Thompson...she has more talent than most people, in any genre
Dakota Fanning...she is that good
Miranda Otto... i saw some of her indy films throughout the last year, good stuff, especially Julie Walking Home.
Emily Mortimer....foreign affair, young adam, and lovely and amazing are recent favorite flicks...
Joan Cusack..she's always good...always.
Natalie Portman...she is talented, she just needs proper directing and asolid script.Leon and Garden State prove this.
Then I'd say Naomi Watts or Charlize Theron..both are capable, but haven't gotten the greatest roles IMO, they have talent though..

Johnny Depp...best actor working period
Ewan McGregor...2nd best actor working, see Young Adam, Moulin Rouge, etc...
Morgan Freeman...always makes a movie better
Jude Law...the new Cary Grant
Paul Giamatti...great supporting actor that could play a lead
William H Macy..he can do anything, very powerful..he seems more "real" than any actor
John Cusack...guilty pleasure, I enjoy all of his films..reminds me more of Jimmy Stewart than Tom Hanks...
Brendan Fraser..highly underrated...Still Breathing, the quiet american and Gods and Monsters are 3 of my favorite movies from the past 20 years, all 3 are excellent
Robert Redford...well, he's starred in a boatload of my most memorable movies..the Natural still makes me cry and the Horse Whispere tugs at my heart strings and that damn jeremiah johnson is one of the finest films ever.
Will farrell..hilarious...
Jean Reno..his films are always great from leon, ronin to wasabi...

Cuz I can't sleep:

Orson Welles (can't even put into words...)
Paul Newman (that guy can act nobody how young/old he is)
Robert Redford (definately an acting legend)
Cary Grant
Humphrey Bogart (what more can I say?)
Johnny Depp (the guy continually amazes me...defiantely one of the best actors!)
Ewan McGregor....(he can do star wars, comedy, mystery, just amazing!)
Gene Hackman (I love everything this guy ever acted in)
Antonio Banderas (just a great actor! i.e. once upon a time in mexico!)
George Sanders.......defiantely my all time favorite!

Katherine Hepburn (put her with any cast/genre and she shines!)
Lauren Bacall (the stuff she did with Bogie totally rocked)
Audrey Hepburn (awesomest actress ever!)
Claudette Colbert
Jody Foster
Susan Sarandon
Joan Crawford
Betty Davis
Sally Field (very impressive work!)
Shirley Temple (she was awesome "back in the day!")

I know........most of my tastes are for the classic era. You just cant find actors/actresses of that kind of caliber at all today!

Hmmm....tough call. I appreciate actors and actresses for a variety of reasons, nailing down "the best" is kind of impossible. How about I just list some top favorites...

  • Kevin Kline (Chameleon; he can do any role, and own it)
  • Edward Norton (Intelligent in life and in his craft)
  • Mel Gibson (Unbeatable acting skills and charisma; owns every movie he's in)
  • Bruce Willis (The gangster of Hollywood)
  • Bill Murray (A legend aged to perfection)
  • Hugh Jackman (Versatility x 100)
  • Johnny Depp (A pure actor, by definition and career)
  • Mos Def (Understated, underappreciated, and unexpected)
  • George Clooney (Because I like him enough that, when he plays himself in every role, it's pure fun)
  • Ewan McGregor (Because he can do a little bit of everything, and do all of it very, very well)

(Most honorable mention: Hugo Weaving, Sean Connery, Jason Stathman, Bencio Del Toro, Matt Damon, Billy Bob Thorton, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tobey Maguire)

  • Cate Blanchette (Most assuredly the modern Katherine Hepburn)
  • Angelica Houston (The most talented 'First Lady' of Hollywood in my mind)
  • Angelina Jolie (The hottest goddess in movies)
  • Michelle Yeoh (Grace, dignity, class, and can drop your ass like a bad habit...without stuntmen)
  • Sigourney Weaver (A legend aged to perfection)
  • Renee Russo (Limitless charisma and skill)
  • Natalie Portman (Star Wars aside, a first-class actress)
  • Alfre Woodard (Power acting and versatility)
  • Audrey Tautou (France's main gift to us)
  • Lucy Liu (Sultry, sexy, silly, and just fun)

(Most honorable mentions: Scarlett Johansson, Carrie-Ann Moss, Jamie Lee Curtis, Drew Barrymoore, Heather Graham, and Joan Cusack)

The guy can act a wide variety of characters/acdents and make them believable. It's not like Bloom who has the same accent for every movie. Depp reinvents himself every time. The guy's a master at the art of acting.

1. Johnny Depp
2. Edward Norton

After them, no specific order...

3. Bill Murray
4. John Cusack
5. Christopher Walken
6. Bruce Willis
7. Robert DeNiro
8. Samuel L. Jackson
9. Brad Pitt (I think he is an amazing character actor, and was typecast as a leading man just because of his looks.)
10. Ewan McGregor

(Honorable mentions to Gary Oldman, Vince Vaughn, Kevin Spacey, Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi, Nicholas Cage, John Corbett, Chow Yun Fat, Bruce Campbell, Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino, George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Michael Chiklis, Kiefer Sutherland, Christian Bale, Tim Roth, James Spader, Zach Braff, John C. McGinley, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Statham...)

Actresses are harder to think of, beyond just "She's hot!". As much as I like certain actresses, I will almost never go to a movie JUST because an actress is in it, while I will with a few of those actors.

1. Kate Winslet
2. Jennifer Connelly
3. Catherine Zeta-Jones
4. Nicole Kidman
5. Scarlett Johansson
6. Alyson Hannigan
7. Cate Blanchett
8. Janeane Garofalo
9. Cameron Diaz
10. Uma Thurman
