(Court TV) — A would-be car thief in Fort Smith, Ark., owes his victim more than an apology.
Police in Fort Smith, Ark., think Joseph McQuade owes the woman his life.
McQuade, 29, was attempting to burglarize one of the woman's two vehicles shortly after midnight on August 15 when he sliced a major artery on his wrist after punching through a glass window.
Sgt. Jarrard Copeland of the Fort Smith Police Department said the robber, who was bleeding profusely, kicked down the door of the woman's home, waking her up in the process. McQuade told the woman he was hurt and needed help; she dialed 911.
"He's lucky he broke into the home of someone who was willing to help him," Sgt. Copeland said. "He was not far from bleeding out."
Copeland said McQuade, who was lying in a pool of blood when officers and EMT workers arrived at the scene, needed several units of blood at the hospital.
McQuade was released from the hospital August 17 and was transported to jail. He is facing burglary and breaking and entering charges.
