its difficult to say.
every page that you load up is filled with images. so, say, the front page. most of those larger, splash images are not on the same server, so they don't count. but, like, the header graphics and the menu gradients and all that little crap are. and small as they may be, they add up.
then there's the "cost" of the actual html/php info -- the magic powder that actually loads up the images and text and such, and reads the database. then there's the database itself, which has to recognize if you're cap'n sammitch or misterjla or just some leacher guest, and subsequently load up all of your info (last time you logged in, post count, how many unread posts there are in the rob's blog forum, etc)
those "transactions" take place when you then click on the forums link. then when you click on the wimmin's folder link, and it has to load up which threads are new, how many pages of old threads there are, how many times each thread has been viewed.... then each thread you click on has its own stuff, and each page of posts after that has its, and then when you go to the reply page, etc.
multiply that by every time you visit, every time misterjla visits, every time a guest visits, etc.
we're a massive forum, with a massive following, and a 6+ year history. there's honestly not many forums out there that are this size that aren't businesses of some sort.
the fact that i'd have to pay an extra $80 (or whatever) a month actually isn't all that bad considering everything the boards demand of the server (bandwith, processor, memory, etc). the only reason its a pain in the ass is because i don't wanna spend an extra $80 a month.

Can't you just archive most of the older posts (even sending a copy to those who care to have such a thing) and then take them out of the loop? I mean...it's fun and all that they are still there, but if it'll make things run more smoothly they aren't essential.
