Deepdiscount.com has a sale going on, and these two films are included in the sale. I love The Magnificent Seven, and I know it's based off of The Seven Samurai. Has anyone seen these? Do you think I'll enjoy them? I've got a paycheck waiting for me, and you know how money just burns a hole in my pants.

I tried watching Seven Samurai once, but it was in Japanese and nearly as old as Llance, so I didnt like it!

Yay indeed, little cowgirl. Yay indeed.
Those films were easily made into westerns because Kurosawa was a big fan of American westerns, especially John Ford movies. They are basically westerns set in feudal Japan. If you can get past the fact that they're foreign films with subtitles, then you'll have no problems with them.

I think I remember hearing this in one of the documentarys on my Magnificent Seven DVD.
I just think it's cool because no one's playing the copyright game here. A bunch of artists admit to being inspired by other artists, and around it goes. No one's complaining that one Seven was a copy or a ripoff of the other. I think that's really classy.

by the way has anyone seen the samurai 7 anime? I thought it was a great series.

At first, I balked at the length of Seven Samurai -- it's got to be as long as Gone with the Wind. However, just finished watching the first half, and I was very impressed. Very. I'll watch the second half tomorrow and have a better review.

So, finished the other half of Samurai last night...
...my one complaint about The Magnificent Seven is that some moments are a little slow. What's interesting is that even though Samurai was longer, I didn't feel like the movie dragged on. Sure, there were moments without any dialouge, but the movie didn't lag.
Its also been a while since I've seen The Magnificent Seven, so I really couldn't remember who dies and what exactly happened. So I was a little shocked that the oldest Samurai lived -- and the drunk one died.
I'm really too dazed to think about what else to say -- maybe there's an advantage to watching foreign films -- you have to depend on more visual clues, and you're not watching it for the celebrities (Yul Brynner is the man). But it was just so well written, and visually so appealing -- like the scene with the youngest samurai and the girl. Just like a painting.
All in all, this is easily up there with Gone with the Wind and Ben-Hur as my all-time favorite movies.
Tonight I'm watching Grave of the Fireflies, and tomorow I'll start Yojimbo.

Okay, Fireflies was sad as hell. Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but it's one of those that I don't think I can watch again. Just too intense.

Saw Yojimbo the other day. Again, like Samurai, I really don't remember anyone's names. Which made it sort of hard.
But I was cracking up the entire time. Nothing beats one scene when one gang boss's brother tries to outbet the other boss's wife for Sanjuro.

I don't think it's fair to say it was better or worse than The Seven Samurai. One's meant to be funny and the other really wasn't. And that's fine. However, I've never seen the Clint Eastwood's 'Man with No Name' films (unless you could High Plains Drifter), so I can't compare it to the American Western version.
All in all, I'm really impressed. I'm glad I went and bought these instead of just renting them. Good call, whoever the hell gave me the idea.
Also, Sanjuro has to be the only Asian guy that I thought was sorta hot. Must be that five o'clock he sported...;)
