It was a good show when Shore was an amoral bastard and Crane was brilliant but insane.
Lately, however, they've made Shore into some sort of "moral authority" and Crane, instead of brilliant and crazy, is coming close to being Homer Simpson-level stupid.

It's still fun to watch but G-man's criticisms do apply. It's gotten more cartoonish overall IMHO.

It is getting too silly and cartoonish. I don't like the crossdressing assistant with MPD. Jerry and his autism was interesting in year 2, because it was treated as a serious thing that he had to overcome. Now it's just him doing wacky things which only take away from the real stars.

I will say that Boston Legal continues to be the most realistic portrayal of lawyers ever seen on tv.

I saw an episode today were Denny Crane shoots a homeless man between the eyes with a paintball gun. And another episode where a plastic surgeon had used his own ass-fat as tissue in a few womens lips

Actually, the most realistic portrayal ever was that show Ed. There, the lawyer actually went into traffic court once or twice.

all david e. kelley shows tend to be like that. they start off with a basic premise, with believable characters, and just get weirder and weirder.
the more ridiculous the subject matter or character, the more likely that subject or character will stick around for more than one episode. traditionally, this continues into the 4th or 5th season, when the show gets so inane, it implodes.
all that said, this is the longest i've ever really liked one of these shows. allan is way too moral and political and denny crane is way too retarded, but its still pretty good, and typically funny. i love the constant references to the characters knowing they're on a tv show.
last week's season finale did, however, retract allan and denny to their earlier states; allan was just a good and silent lawyer, and denny crane actually de-mad cowed and made some excellent points.
hopefully, they'll stick with that for awhile.

they need to drop Jerry and Clarence. They're dead weight and, by their very presence, make the show silly. i always liked Alan's soapbox speeches and his moral stances, but it seems lately it's all for show. Alan used to pick real fights when he thought an injustice was being done, now it seems more like an empty speech with no real substantive dialogue to it. Also, the gay subtext is getting a little weird.

sleep over tonight? though, none creepier than alan dressing as shirley for halloween.
its also a little annoying that every lawyer always wins. and often in impossible circumstances (against credit card companies, casinos, the government a number of times, etc)
one of the other aspect of david e kelley's shows that is currently missing is the use of a ridiculously hot chick -- typically a ridiculously hot black chick.
murphy brown doesn't cut it.

Yeah. I was going to mention that. Lake Bell from the first season had a sorta weird face but a killer bod. Later, of course, they had the girl who modeled "Tomb Raider" (Rhona Mitra [sp?]). Drool.
Julie Bowen is ridiculously purty but not sexy (and, of course, she's currently preggers). There just isn't a lot of good ogling opportunity there any more.

I was able to get my hands on year 7 of the Practice, where they fired most of the cast and brought in James Spader. Alan was very dark there, still witty and funny and caring about people, but he had a lot of demons. It made for some damn good stuff, his jokes were fewer and much sharper. I think they'd be smart to streamline the cast next year. Fire that girl and her boyfriend Clarence, also axe Jerry. And Denny needs to straddle that line between funny old man and sad old man.
And Julie Bowen is very pretty. Only a gay closeted traffice lawyer would criticize her in any way.

The problem with David E Kelley shows is that at some point they start introducing new characters that are completely pointless. Then they realize the characters are pointless and instead of making them work, they fire them after a few episodes and hire new ones. The worst part is that each character comes with a lot of potential plotlines (like a romantic interest for another cast member), which are completely abandoned when the actor is fired.
I watched most of season 1 of Boston Legal, and then when I was able to catch a bit of season 2, the supporting characters were completely different. Who are these people? It's not a bad show, but I stopped watching it because I see where it's going. If the show was about Alan Shore and Denny Crane, I'd still watch it.

I agree. That's why I said she's "ridiculously purty." But you have to admit that, compared to most of the girls on the show, who show lots of clevage/wear short skirts and sometimes (for example in the case of Rhona Mitra in that Robin costume) dress up in outfits, the producers do their best to make her unsexy.

I've noticed a pattern with David E Kelley which corresponds to what you've observed.
At some point, Kelley will be out of work. Then he'll come up with a great show: Picket Fences, the Practice, Boston Legal. It will be really good.
Then, the networks all beg him to create another show: Chicago Hope, Ally McBeal, Boston Public, the Girls Club, Wedding Bells, whatever, to run concurrently during the season. Most of these shows also start out pretty good (if they aren't they tend to get canceled).
Unfortunately, Kelley likes to write most of the eps of any show he produces. So now he's spread too thin writing more than one show a week. So, he gets sloppy and starts producing whatever script idea pops into his head instead of letting his internal editor throw up the stuff that isn't so good.
This, in turn, makes each show both a little "weirder" and starts him losing each show's unique "voice." Finally, all his current shows either end up canceled, very generic (see, eg, the Practice pre-Alan) or he quits.
Then, after a year or so of being out of work, he comes up with another good idea for a show, and the cycle begins anew.
