I mean no disrespect to them. But they aren't as funny as they think they are. Sorry rex they are really fucking overrated. They used to be real funny and original and now it's pretty lame.

yeah Colbert used to seem like a comedic genius but like most comedians I think overexposure shows their limitations, especially when they play the same character.

I think of watching their shows as being like mining. Sometimes you strike diamonds, but mostly you just get a lot of coal. I still watch both shows though. And, to be fair, I think they've generally done a good job with this years election coverage.

I still remember Christina Ricci showing her underwear on Jon's old show.

In Strangers with Candy he was a different and infinitely more likable comedian.

Now, as a diehard satirist, he has to devote himself to this allegedly extreme conservative image lest someone catch him out of character and then hold the two examples together.

I've never been a fan of Stewart, going all the way back to his stint on MTV 20 years ago. Colbert's funnier but, as others have noted, that shtick gets old easily.

Both of them are probably in trouble when and if the Black socialist wins next year. Sure, for the first month or two they'll get in some good riffs on Biden but after that they aren't going to know what to do since both of them are actually so far in the tank for Obama they won't be able to make fun of him for very long.

Yeah, I never got why he was called a "comedian." Complaining bitterly about shit is not the same as telling jokes.

If it were, rex would be the next Richard Pryor.

I think Stewart and Colbert got too full of themselves. They believe the hype from their own fans. I still think they're capable of being funny, but Stewart especially is starting to remind me of George Carlin in his later years when his stand-up became so bitter and angry that the funny was run right out of it.

Yep. There's an interview with the two of them in the most recent Entertainment Weakly. And, while both of them actually make some pretty good points about the state of politics in America today, the points are the kind of points you expect from people like George Will or Chris Matthews, not comedians.

And that's probably the thing that pisses me off most about Stewart. You can tell he wants to be, and thinks of himself as, the next Tim Russert. And, if he wants that gig, more power to him. But don't claim to be "just a comedian" whenever the heat gets to be a little too much.

Like iggy said when Colbert does hit it's hilarious but it's less and less. I think he needs to change characters. I don't think he's actually full of himself as said earlier, I think sometimes people get the character on the show confused with the real guy, even interviewers. In his 60 minutes interview he came off as very humble.

I think one of my favorite bits in recent memory was the one were the Word took place in an alternate universe where Colbert was a long-haired, pipe-smoking liberal.

Yeah, he seems like a good guy. The problem he faces is that, when he started on the Daily Show, he did his "Bill O'Reilly parody" with his real name. So now, for all intents and purposes, Stephen Colbert is always going to be that guy in most people's minds.

I'm sure that, when he started, he never figured it would last this long or be this big. Now he's stuck.

It's hard enough to avoid typecasting in Hollywood but its going to be nigh impossible if you play a character who has your actual name.

I think Colbert is limited by the context of his show. Occasionally, he'll break out with his 'novel' or music video; but being a parody political news show does narrow what he can do most of the time.

The last funny thing I saw Colbert do was when he tried to run for President as both a Republican and Democrat and tried to spoof how each would act.

Yep.

Colbert is like the "what if" version of Steve Carrell (or vice versa). Both had pretty much the same career trajectory until about 4-5 years ago, even working on a lot of the same shows and animated programs.

Carrell, however, was lucky or smart enough to get the gig playing characters who WEREN'T named "Steve Carrell." He may never be the biggest star in the world but, even after 'the Office' ends he'll have a career in live action (even if just as the supporting guy, ala 'Anchorman').

And the thing is: from a talent standpoint Colbert could do those kind of movies. But the fact of the matter is that he'll never get the chance because people would see him name in the credits and assume he's playing the same character he plays on Comedy Central.
