Speaking of which, the fish Jacob was eating at the beginning was a Red Herring.

Now that I watched the episode again I realized that at least four people died or we found out they died.

Rose and Bernard are the Adam and Eve skeletons in the cave.
Juliet and her cleavage died setting off the bomb.
Locke has been dark Locke since Ben killed him.

And the one I'm not sure about:
Claire died when her house blew up and Facob was using her body while she was in his cabin.

Was Facob also all the dead people Hurley talked to? It makes sense.

This episode was more epic than I originally thought.

Locke seemed surprised to know that Ben had spoken to his daughter. I think part of the dead people is still there when Jacob's bro/smoke monster impersonates them. Also, Christian said "Say hello to my son". The only one who seemed out of character, come to think of it, was Ben's daughter.

Claire (or Jacob's enemy posing as her) will return in the sixth season. In Season 4, after Claire was caught in her house when it exploded, Miles started looking at her strangely several times. I think he suspected that she was not what she seemed.

BTW, did anyone notice that Jacob gave a gift to each of the people he met in the flashbacks? He gave Kate that New Kids on the Block lunch pail. He gave James a pen or pencil to continue writing his letter. He gave Jack a chocolate bar. He gave Hurley a cab ride and a guitar. He gave Jin and Sun something, but I can't remember -- was it just his blessing? Likewise, with Locke, he gave him hope.

So Jacob seems to play the role of Mr. Destiny in several lives. But I'm not convinced that Jacob is a force for good. Perhaps Jacob's brother (the one who wanted to kill him) is the good one.

I forgot to mention: I think the gift-giving thing is significant. Each of the people he gave gifts to now owes him a favour in some way.

He gave Jack candy, Kate money and Sawyer a pen. Hurley got a pen, money and candy when he got out of jail. Supposedly there's some significance to that.

He touched all of them, and gave them an order (sort of). He told Kate not to steal again, and uh, I can't remember what else.

He told Kate not to steal, Hurley to appreciate his gifts, Jin and Sun their love is special and not to give up on it, Jack that sometimes people need a push and Sawyer to move on past his parents death.

But, in a way, Jacob got at least two them to do exactly the opposite of what he claimed he wanted them to do.

He told Kate not to steal but, by getting her out of trouble as a little girl, set up the idea that she could get away with stealing.

He told Sawyer to move past his parents' death but gave him the pen to finish his "promise" not to.

The Jin/Sun and Jack visits might have been the same thing but I can't figure out how without re-watching some episodes.

It was almost as if he wasn't there to make things better but to make sure that they "became" the people who would end up on the flight.

it's a chess game -- he's moving them all into place, on their path

I think that Jacob's touch is more significant than the gifts.

It even looked like he brought John back to life after his fall.

Yeah...the theory. Funny how it took Miles to point out that maybe Jack was actually going to cause the incident by nuking the hatch.

In any event as MEM points out Juliets signed for a different series next year. So unfortunately she's probably dead.

maybe.

but lost has a pretty unique (easy?) filming schedule. its possible she could work them both, and/or serve in a reduced capacity. ...titty...

one possibility:

we'll see juliet in one or two episodes. and, perhaps, this time around, she'll turn down guyliner's offer to join the island's cause -- like, maybe jacob will appear and the bus will just miss her ex-husband.

its also possible we didn't see flashbacks with jacob's interaction, but rather fast forwards.

Even so, how could they be flash forwards since they obviously occurred pre-crash?

I would simply geek-OUT if the final episode of the series has every single living-and-dead LOSTie return or cameo in some way. Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia, Libby, Michael, Walt, Claire, Charlie, Nikki, Paulo, Mr. Eko, Danielle, Artz, Frogurt, etc., etc. THAT would be so fucking kick-ass awesome...

More likely Jack's lying in the jungle because they're back on the island in the present and the only thing "changed" is that fact.

That's what I'm thinking, too. I also think Rob is pretty damn square-on as to what is happening, overall. Once I saw the finale, it all clicked with me. The Smoke Monster/"Esau"/Jacob's Adversary/The Devil is every appearance of any supernatural character, sans this final episode. Everyone from Locke's dad, to Kate's horse, to every Christian appearance, to Dave (Hurley's buddy from the mental institute), Ben's mother in the woods and daughter in the tomb, Eko's brother, etc., etc. It's fucking brilliant and makes the most sense.

He gave Jin/Sun the message not to give up on their love or each other. Not to take each other for granted. That's what Jin ends up doing when he was the corporate hitman for her father, and she cheats on him with the bald rich guy. However, his message seems to have also stuck, because they haven't given up on each other all through this. From their initial "distance" with each other, to her cheating and pregnancy, to his "death" and her current search to get back to him, they haven't given up.

Jack's "little push" will probably bear real fruit by the end of the series...

if the "reset" notion is correct, and a chunk o'time was restarted, maybe that chunk wasn't just 3 years (no real reason to think it would be) but 20 or 50 or 100. in that instance, maybe what we saw was jacob visiting a young kate/sawyer, etc after the events in the season finale.

note how his appearances could indicate things were being changed; like telling james to let go of the anger towards his parent's killer, or telling kate not to be the dumb fuck that gets every body captured all the time. ... er... steal.

That would make a lot sense. Jin and Sun never take each other for granted, Kate and Sawyer live different lives, etc... EXCEPT that Jacob's involvement in Locke and Sayid's stories fits with the present continuity. Locke did survive the fall, and Sayid wasn't ran over by the car that killed his girlfriend.

maybe.

either way, i still think we witnessed jacob "setting the board", so to speak. and, yeah, its possible they were all flash backs. or maybe some were flash backs, some were flash forwards.

the jin, sun, kate, sawyer, and jack ones could be viewed as something changed, like a FF - kate and sawyer's being the more potentially obvious ones, jin/sun and jack's being more "here's an important tip for you" kinds. maybe locke's is more on that level, too.

for example: immediately after the fall, jacob, in a jesusial way, apologizes for locke's situation ("im sorry this happened to you"), which could be a/the small bit of good will locke needed in his life at the time, having reached the point of doubting everything.

...and, maybe jacob just really hated sayids wife.

But how did Sayind survive in previous continuity? Without Jacob there he would have crossed the street.

I like the idea of these being flash forwards. But I can't see them explaining that some of them belong to the new continuity and some of them took place in the previous one without half the viewership dying horribly from head explosions.

I still think that was facob in the flashbacks. I think what he did encouraged people to go to the island or back to the island. That was he got his loophole and was able to kill the real Jacob.

I can't find a good write up of the rest of the panel but a reset did happen. Most of the season one cast will return. This season will be very similar to season one.
