Who is good, but I don't think it's the best. I would put Who in the top five with Babylon 5 and Deep Space nine.

Does anyone know when the next new episode of Dr Who will be shown?

First of all, shut the fuck up. Doctor Who was around before you were alive and will be around after you're dead. BOW to the MIGHT!

Second, depends on what station you are watching it on. SciFi Channel? No idea. BBCAmerica? No idea. Downloading online? Sometime this fall. This is the hiatus year as they prepare the sets for HD transmission come 2010. New Doctor, new TARDIS interior, new producers and creators, (hopefully) new opening theme. Until then, we get two one-off episodes, and then David Tennant's two-part finale sometime at the end of the year.

Finally, I don't put any stock into WIZARD having integrity by picking Who as Number One. But, I'm glad it's at least giving Who its spotlight for a bit...

Top Two have to be Star Trek (the original series) and The Twilight Zone.

The remainder can fight amongst themselves for 3rd.

You're welcome.

And you're right, the two before the NUMBER ONE (which is Doctor Who) is Star Trek and Twilight Zone. But, Who has seniority... ;\)

BTW, as much as I hate it, I'd have to give Trek the nod over Who purely based on the fact it has a much bigger fan base, and higher exposure.

Hannah Montana has a bigger fan base and higher exposure than most other musical acts. Doesn't make her better. Trek is sci-fi for children and the emotionally crippled. Dr. Who is better in all its incarnations.

I'd argue that Treks fan base has been and will be around a lot longer than Hannah Montana.
Montana is flavour of the month, Star Trek has longetivity.

Nothing lasts as long as both Trek and Who does, without having something going for it (even if it is the gay community).

And to say Trek is sci-fi for children, when Who has been aimed at kids since its inception, is quite funny!

Doctor Who may've been directed at children in its early incarnations, but I've seen enough of the Tom baker episodes to suggest that it shifted towards adult appeal. The current run, starting with Christopher Eccleston, is most certainly geared more towards a mature fan base. And, really, that's the key word: "mature." Read Beardguy's comments about Trek and tell me I'm off base about calling Trek "childish" and "simplistic." Hell, "City On The Edge Of Forever" is generally considered to be the best Trek episode, and Roddenberry had that fucker hacked down to be simpler and more palatable.

The Hannah Montana analogy has nothing to do with longevity. Both Trek and Who have longevity. My point is that you said Trek is better because of fan base and exposure. My point there was that fan base and exposure have nothing to do with quality.

Sorry Joe, I grew up watching Who as a kid.
Its always been aimed at kids, and still is.

Maybe thats not the way you see it over there, but over here its primarily viewed as a kids programme that adults can watch (kinda like the 60s Batman tv series).

And as for the quality over quantity argument, then I could say something less successful, like Quantum Leap, was better because of the quality of the show.
The point is, when you decide wich is the greatest sci-fi show ever, you have to look at not only the quality, but the success and influence it has had within the genre.
Trek, is a pile of shit in my eyes, but what it has achieved through spin offs, movies and merchandise, shows that there is certainly a reason it has been that successful for so long.

And that's a valid argument. When I look at any "best of" list, I look at it in terms of quality. Not fan base, and not longevity (because many shows that I imagine are - or should be - on that list probably lasted less than three seasons), but on the quality of the shows themselves. Which is why I don't see Trek as the best show.

Fair enough. If you consider Trek's various spin-offs part of a whole, then no one can deny its success.

Exactly. Star Trek is childish, simplistic, laughably bad television/film. But, thanks in large part to its fan base, it has been gifted with a long life span. My point has always been that Doctor Who is better. Maybe it's geared towards children, but there's plenty about the show that helps it transcend its directed fan base. Trek, on the other hand, particularly original Trek, rarely rose above its trappings.

The first season of the new who. The last 4 episodes introduces Captain Jack who isn't gay but will have sex with any form of life, male or female.

I am glad that even though this show is Sci Fi, it is still grounded in reality. I will be checking this show out

When Dark Shadows is on your list of the top 25 SCI-FI (or is it SY-FY?) shows, your criteria are way to broad. And are Buffy and Angel REALLY science fiction? What few episodes I saw ranged between horror and comedy and drama, but never sci-fi (sy-fy?).
