Yeah, I'd read that the network's been down since last Wednesday. Now we know why.

They revealed a couple days ago that somebody hacked the admin accounts for the network.

Anywho, how is this a Sony fuck up?

Every time someone gets hacked, it's their own fault?

I'm more curious about who could have done this. Anonymous is the most likely culprit even though they say they're not responsible for it. But I suppose that it could be someone capitalizing on Anonymous' current temper tantrum to draw attention away from their digital trail.

But....Nah. It's probably Anonymous.

I'd have to agree with rex on this one. If you're going to pool people's information like that, you're responsible to keep it safe.

I didn't say they weren't responsible for keeping info safe. I'm saying that there's nothing to suggest their security was sub-par. Granted I don't know how beefed up their security is, but neither does anyone else making the claim that this is entirely their fault.

No system is unhackable. I mean, you think this couldn't happen to XBL? In which case, if it could, wouldn't that mean they're being negligent simply by the mere act of consolidating consumer information on their network?

If this happened to Microsoft, lord knows I'd be rubbing it in the X-bots' faces over at Gamespot just because they have penchant for spinning any scenario in the negative for rival companies. But in all seriousness, I wouldn't necessarily be holding Microsoft responsible. It's impractical to blame them for being hacked simply because they were hacked.

Actually, George Hotz proved that Sony has piss-poor security for this generation, in the sense that they only need to decrypt a single key and they will be able to run any code they want on the PS3 like it was officially signed software.

Now now. The system turned out more resilient than it's competition to be sure. 360 was hacked and conditioned for pirated software within months. It took the better part of the generation thus far for someone like Hotz to find the weakness in the PS3's code to do something similar.

So really: "piss-poor" compared to what?

Don't get me wrong though. It's a valid point. Variable declarations should be a tad more creative.

piss poor compared to the other consoles from its generation \:\) The other consoles, before you could pirate games, you need to crack the encryption (or find a way to run the copy) per title. With the PS3, you just need the encryption key for your console and you can burn any title you want and it will run like an officially licensed copy. The only deterrent to piracy is that downloading 50gb dumps would be more trouble than just buying a 2nd hand copy.

And that's just for pirating titles. With the other consoles, you can't go online without risking your console from being outed (and bricked/updated?). With the PS3, there's no way for Sony to find out if the console that's online has illegal code running on it (including non-game ones, like say, a rootkit that will help an individual access their servers), since the approach is not "trick the console into thinking that my unlicensed code is official" BUT "turn my code into an official one".

BTW, the PSP-3000 uses the same type of security, which led to the HEN exploit being updated into something that works 100% everytime you run it.

P.S.

You have a very good point, though. The hackers had a bit of a problem with exploiting the PS3. Took them some time, compared to the other consoles.

The problem was just that Sony's engineers probably didn't expect their ingenious security to be cracked, and had no plan Bs (which was stupid on their part. Everything gets cracked, especially now).

As soon as the doors were opened, they had no easy way of closing it again (even recalling the consoles and changing things at the hardware level could have negative results, as it means old titles will not work on new consoles without updating the games as well)

Sony is going to offer some sort of "good will" due to all of this. It will probably end up being a crappy trial of their music service that butchers the word curiosity.

Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

Its what I expected they would do. I'm hoping the free download isn't something shitty and they give us a choice. I don't care much about PSN plus and music service.

the video game debate has finally reached the issue truest to every fanboy's heart: "my console's information is more secure than yours". coupled with the might of web article links where the internet agrees, some spirited and defensive "nuh uh!"s for retorts, a punctuated laughy emoticon sprinkled here and there, a graphic or comic book-style representation of your feelings (optional), bake for 2 hours (pro!) and we're golden.

the era of political rivalry and green lantern division are over. rise, gamer fanboy security force!

one can only hope each combatant is boldly and proudly wearing a t-shirt of their respective corporation, amongst a field of company pennants, whilst assuring colleagues that, despite staying up all night to prepare additional statements, and /or research the competitor's previous comments, they don't take it too seriously. "it's the other guy."

my friends... welcome!

Basically.

Right now, a bunch of amateur server gurus are commenting on all these 'PSN breach' articles trying to make credible commentary on contrasts between Sony's and Microsoft's security.

JLA has become a pretty good example of this: "My lord god Microsoft didn't suffer a breach! Their security is miles ahead of Sony's!"

These retards don't know jack shit about either one's security and yet they pick and choose between either one based on their own anecdotal expertise.

I, personally, have no fucking clue what kind of servers Sony or Microsoft are using--nor do I know what kind of software they use to secure them. As such, I will never in a million years attach my financial info on either network.
