There is currently a bill up before the Massachusetts legislature that would redefine marriage as it currently exists, so that any two people of any gender can be legally married.
The Catholic Church is against this, but here's what I don't understand: are they against any gay unions, or just calling it a marriage? I read the "official statement" that was handed out with the church bulletin, and I noticed how they carefully skirted the issue. They want to define marriage as between one man and one woman, but how then would they define a gay union?

First of all, they haven't been called 'Alter Boys' in years. Like, back when they were saying the Mass in Latin. I say this as an 'Alter Server', by the way. And the most sinful thing any priest I knew did was start off every homily with an Irish pub joke (having been in so many).

Here's the run-down on the Church's veiw on Homosexualuty (paraphrased from The Truth of Catholicism):

Homosexual acts are morally wrong (because they violate the iconogrpahy of sexual differentiation and complementarity that makes sexual love possible as an act of mutual giving and reciprocity, and because they are, by nature, not life-generating. However, homosexulaity as an orientation is not sinful.

The Catholic Church does call on homosexuals to live chastely. The logic behind this is deeply rooted in the Church's concept of marital sex and love. Sex is seen as giving to the other person, as opposed to recieving.

However, the Catholic Church has power in only one nation--the Vatican. Here in America, we have condems (Trojan Maaaaaaan!). And rated 'R' movies. And funny beer comercials (okay, actually, I doubt the Church condemns those). Here, the government shouldn't penatize you because of your sexual orintation.

Well, I think what people might be getting at is the standard hypocricy of the Church. I can list about 5-10 gay Catholic priests that I have heard of (not making news, just gay). Were they boy-lovers? I dunno. Just know they wer gay. So they are masquerading behind the cloth and discussing virtues, while going against the very beliefs they preach.

It's not a new story, goes back to Evolution, or Galileo's discoveries involving the earth and the sun. Church is a very conservative establishment afraid of change, and therefore condemns most ideas that connect with change.

Thus, they are viewed as outdated, and generally frowned upon by normal, up-to-date intellects.

But being gay is not the sin. So, techniqually, you could have gay priest. As long as they love and serve God, right?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the Bible (see: Best selling sci-fi/fantasy novel of all time), isn't God all against Men who lie with other men?

Catholocism still involves the bible in some way, right?

Hence, to people who follow the bible, homosexuality would be a sin.

Oh, and as for a Gay Marriage Bill... whose parents would get this bill, since there really is no bride or groom (technically speaking).

Keep in mind, the section saying one man cannont 'lie with another man like a women' also mentions the protocols for selling your daughter and some other weird (by our standards) stuff. It may be outdated, but it is still a part of Jeudo-Christian history. Besides, 'lying with a man' is a physical act. You can be a homosexual and be attrached to your own gender. You don't have to have sex with someone of your own gender to be a homosexual. That's why orintation is not a sin--heck, even I will look at a guy and think he's sexy looking. But do I have sex with him? No.

You *just know* that over ninety percent of the posters here are hoping that bill passes...
