Got my copy yesterday. I have to admit, I like the framework with the prince and his scribe discovering Conan's life story in flashback. It adds a great mythological aspect to the forthcoming adventures we'll be getting.

As for the art...I really like the colors a lot. Dave Stewart's work here beats the pants off what he did on the Superman/Batman book. Everything's bright, rich, and vibrant here. I'm not real sure about the uninked pencils, though. There are times where the lack of inks adds a certain mood and style to the piece, but sometimes Conan looks kind of goofy without strong ink lines to define his face. He especially looks like a toothless hick right out of a Jeff Foxworthy joke book in the panel where he's drinking with the (very well-drawn) dancing girls. Maybe Nord will refine the look of the series as time goes on, but for right now I'm on the fence regarding the lack of inks.

That said, it looks to be the start of something good, and I'm looking forward to seeing where Busiek takes this. What do you guys think?

Conan the Barbarian. Remember, the Robert E. Howard character Arnold Schwarzenegger used to play? Yeah, that Conan. The big, loincloth wearing guy with a sword and an ax.

Besides, I highly doubt that Conan O'Brien could carry his own comic book....

I liked it. I'll buy the regular series. Busiek is awesome.

Actually, I liked everything in it except for the Conan character design.

I think the lack of inks has a lot to do with the problems in Conan's look. There's no definition to his face like there is with the other characters in the book. For some reason, Nord's Conan looks awfully nondescript, which makes it all too easy for his to look goofy and silly at the wrong times.

I purchased it, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. It looks good, and the price is right (25 cents !)

I like Cary Nord's art. The last thing I saw him do was a three-issue RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT series for Dark Horse.

Does anyone else hate the new Dark Horse cover logo on all their books?

I'm hoping for the best with this new CONAN series. I'm glad to see CONAN back on the stands. I previously started another topic about Robert E. Howard/Conan material:

If they ever go to a Nordic-like region, they have to bring in the Masturbating Bear!

I thought it was a great preview issue. Although it read like a preview, and not a complete story.

I hope this was a sample of the consistent quality we can expect to see from a regular CONAN series, from the same creative team.

In any case, it's the nicest CONAN work since CONAN THE ADVENTURER in 1994-1995 by Roy Thomas and Rafael Kayanan.

I really hope that level of quality can be sustained in the new series.
