On a whim, I picked up the latest issue of Superman and, I gotta say, Robinson actually succeeded in doing a good Superdog story. It was almost on a par with an issue of "All Star."
I realize that Krypto and stuff like that isn't every reader's cup of tea. However, I think Superman works best when you keep it a little lighter, a little more "out there" fantasy than typical modern comics.

I disagree. It depends on the writer and the character.

The Atlas battle has been long and drawn out, which is why I'm not enjoying Superman as much. Krypto...is okay. But the thought boxes aren't needed. The art does a good job at portraying a happy, angry, or loyal dog.

I liked the one Krypto story where he tore out Mongul's throat. That was bad-ass.

Lying in the Gutters: James Robinson and Dan [DiDio] had a stand up argument that led to Robinson quitting the Superman books and the DCU in general.

Yeah, Dan-o wants to change the status quo of Action Comics also by making it about other characters. He says that Superman has been the star of Action Comics for all its run. False. Didio needs to bone up on his post-Byrne Action Comics (which went weekly for a time). If he wants to send Superman in space for a storyline or two that's fine, but get with it. The dude does not abide.

I think Action should be a team-up book with Superman and guest star of the month, or maybe have a back-up feature starring one of Superman's supporting cast, like Steel or Jimmy Olsen or someone.

That's exactly what Byrne tried on his initial Action run in the mid 80s. Personally, I think there are so many crossovers and mini-series at this point that team-up books are actually sort of passe. Hence the failure of the latest B&B even though you had guys like Waid, Perez and Ordway working on it.

I am not sure I agree with Diddy-O but I can't say I am that bothered. Robinson's run has been quite dull and uninspiring so far.

Let's face it: the best Superman story in at least ten years, probably twenty, was the All Star book. Maybe it's time for DC to bite the bullet logo and just give us that on a regular basis.

I think Action should be a team-up book with Superman and guest star of the month No. Superman is leaving earth forever (again), but this time Action Comics is staying on earth and focusing on new characters (possibly the new Nightwing and Flamebird team that was just introduced). Learn to read. And shave that god-damn thing. I feel I should probably be more upset that they appear to be remaking the exile in space saga, but it's been twenty years since the original, so eh.

I think the quality of the story owes a lot to the fact that the creators took their time to tell it. Since, apparently, fanboys can't survive without monthly fixes of books they love (or hate, given the number of complaints about ASS-Bat's lateness), if ASS had been published as a regular book, by the third issue Quitely would have probably been replaced by one of the guys who drew Countdown.

I think most people can survive without the monthly fix as long as the gaps are logical.
If, say, Superman is not published for a couple of months between arcs and then gets published straight through the arc, most people wouldn't complain about the gap between stories. What pisses people off is when there are unjustified breaks in the middle of a storyline that seem to have no basis other than "the creator couldn't arsed to get it done in a timely manner."

Yes on both counts. "What's so funny..." was also excellent but it was only a single issue story. Further, everything that was great about it was undone soon thereafter when they tried to make Manchester Black a recurring character.

DC should change creative teams on the Supe titles every few issues like Marvel has done with Amazing Spiderman. It would keep the series form getting stale and give lesser known talents a chance to show their stuff.

I disagree. If anything, they should go back to the idea that Superman and Action are separate titles, with wholly separate creative teams and separate storylines, not unlike the Batman/Tec arrangement for most issues of the Morrison/Dini runs.

Right, but with Superman instead of Batman. There's no reason why they can't do a Superman/Steel (or insert character here) story in the Brave and the Bold from time to time. It'd probably be better than launching a Superman Family title which would doubtfully do much better than Superman Confidential. I do agree with backups in one of the titles, just not all the time. DC should change creative teams on the Supe titles every few issues like Marvel has done with Amazing Spiderman. It would keep the series form getting stale and give lesser known talents a chance to show their stuff. I disagree. I'd like to see a combination of the above two ideas, personally. Absolutely. Johns and Frank can be the main team over in Action Comics for some of the more major arcs, while other teams rotate writing/drawing chores in between. Gary Frank is awesome, it would be a shame if he got burnt out quickly or worse: overrated.
