Coach resignes after being charged with sex abuse
  • RED CREEK, N.Y. -- A coach at Red Creek Middle School has resigned after being accused of sexually abusing a student. Kelly Powers has been charged with sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child after she turned herself in to the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office.

According to the school district, Powers worked as an office monitor and coached several girls athletic teams. Investigators say the victim, who was under the age of 14, was a family friend of Powers. They say the sexual abuse occurred several times and in a couple different locations.

"According to our investigation, this abuse began in October of 2008 and continued up until approximately a week and a half ago. There were incidents that occurred at the victim's residence in Cayuga County and incidents that occurred at Red Creek School on school property, as well as on a school bus,” said Joseph Weeks, Cayuga County Sheriff's Detective.

Powers was charged in Cayuga County, where she lives, and could face additional charges in Wayne County, which is where the school is located.

The district says she has resigned from her job at the school.
