Personally I think it's brilliant that they made Mary turn evil (and kinky) and later had Freddy tore Red Arrow's arm off (and possibly turn out to be a villain). A stroke of genius that made those characters relevant for the first time in 40 years (or more).

I've never read anything that had to with Marvel aside from Kingdom Come, so I have no real frame of reference with regards to relevance or lack thereof.
But I'm assuming that Mary Marvel used to be the exact opposite of what you described based on the fact that Marvel was marketed to kids.
In which case--and not to lump myself in with the apparent Marvel-tards 'cuz I honestly don't care--wouldn't such a dramatic paradigm switch mean that this individual is in fact
not the once irrelevant character but rather a completely different one with Marvel's name and symbol attached?
