Maybe you’ve seen the trailer or vaguely get the premise of Hot Tub Time Machine (it’s below, just in case). Four guys get into a hot tub and are sent back in time to a universe that still only knows Michael Jackson for his music and . It’s Bill and Ted with a more outlandish concept and less Keanu Reeves. I’ve seen that trailer way too many times because, or at least I believe, that I’m the targeted demo of a 25-34 male who watches sports and Comedy Central too much. It should be my sense of humor, but I was doubting it.
Something’s happening this morning. I noticed it first last night when Roger Ebert posted the link to his review, and then Pat Kiernan, Mediaite contributor and the guy who, in my head, will always be the host of the World Series of Pop Culture, noted that New York Daily News was also fairy complimentary:
I’m sorry, but how can you not want to see a movie called “Hot Tub Time Machine”? I’ve been intrigued since I read about it months ago. The premise is that a group of male friends is transported back to the 1980s via, of course, a hot tub. The New York Daily News says “this guys-gone-wild comedy is actually pretty damn funny,” due in large part to Rob Corddry, whose role is the most “memorable showcase for a goofball co-star since Michael Keaton in 1981’s ‘Night Shift.’”
Now I just may have to go check it out, and that scares me. Could this year’s Hangover really involve meta-80’s jokes and a jacuzzi that breaks the time-space contiuum? Let’s see how it does come the release of box office numbers on Sunday…
It is worth noting that Mediaite’s Smart Hollywood started this trend, with a super smart and insightful review from Wednesday. Check that review for the real deal.
I kind of want to see this. However, at the same time, the fact that they are now making "nostalgia" movies about a time period in which I was in high school and/or college (or even law school) is kind of depressing.
As someone else noted, if they remade "Back to the Future" now, and Marty went back the same number of years as he did in the original, his parents would be graduating high school in the early to mid-eighties.
Actually, the more I saw the trailers, the more I've wanted to see this movie. It looks like it's one of those that realizes that it's stupid and just runs with it for some good laughs. When the guys said, "It's some kind of hot tub time machine" and then looks at the camera, I was sold.
whomod said: I generally don't like it when people decide to play by the rules against people who don't play by the rules. It tends to put you immediately at a disadvantage and IMO is a sign of true weakness. This is true both in politics and on the internet."

just saw it. just loved it. awesome, awesome movie.
not-really-related aside, i really thought "hangover" was not great. and perhaps it was ruined by expecting too much out of it when everyone said it was awesome. ...and it so very wasn't.
but "hot tub" is just aweshome. its so stupid and loves being stupid. so very many 80s bits, but not in a super hoaky way. the whole film is just a farce of itself, and just makes it sweet. can't wait to own it.
Warning, Spoiler:
"put'em in a body bag" was glorious, but... no "better off dead" references? really? ...two dollars cash? nothing?

Same here, though I'm looking forward to seeing it again because I hear it gets better.

rented it over the weekend. got the "un-rated" version and couldn't spot a difference from the theatrical release. still quite awesome, though, sadly, lesser so. maybe it's cuz now i was expecting it to be funny, or maybe parts of the movie were shock-value-dependent. either way, it's still awesome. and the hangover is still shit.
Shit yeah, I loved it! Cordry was a less-annoying and far funnier version of Jack Black. Damn funny! Not to mention, TITS! Nothing says 80's like random nipples...
Black is good in the right film (Tenacious D, Hi Fidelity, Tropic Thunder and even School of Rock) but like a lot of comedians he tends to phone it in in shit movies with crap directors.
Black is a lot like Ferrel. He's pretty much only got two, maybe three characters in him. He's got to find a movie that fits one of those characters right for him to be funny. Otherwise, he's annoying.

i liked tenacious d & school of rock. ooh, and be kind rewind!
i actually hated him in tropic thunder. i thought he was one of the few sour notes in that film.

I finally saw this today and can see what you're saying. I really enjoyed it and will probably get the unrated blu-ray but a lot of things in the movie were dependent on you not knowing what was going to happen, like when Glover was going to lose his hand or how much they were going to screw with the past. I think it would be a great movie to watch next time I watch the Back To The Future trilogy.
November 6th, 2012: Americas new Independence Day.
Just watched this yesterday. It had its moments but I didn't think it was as funny as everyone told me it was.
big_pimp_tim-made it cool to roll in the first damn place! Mon Jun 11 2007 09:27 PM-harley finally rolled with me "I'm working with him...he's young but, there is much potential. He can apprentice with me and then he's yours for final training. He will remember the face of his father...
Some day, Knutreturns just may be the greatest of us all...."-THE bastard

The movie was pretty funny. The only 80's cliche it lacked was a ski off. Great to see the Karate Kid bad guy still getting some work.

agreed on all counts.
Oderint, dum metuant.
You are a god damned idiot, you know that? You ought to be smacked upside your dumb-fuck head, even after all these years. Shame on you!
Actually, I believe there was a 'two dollars' reference. It came from one of the extras, but it was still there.
