Warner Bros. is taking a trip to Jellystone Park.

The studio is developing a feature version of "Yogi Bear," the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon. "Surf's Up" co-helmer/co-writer Ash Brannon will direct the film.

Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, who executive produced "That '70s Show" and are writing the feature "Tooth Fairy" for Fox, are penning the screenplay.

The project, culled from Warners' vast library, is planned as a live-action/animated hybrid along the lines of Fox's 2007 hit "Alvin & the Chipmunks." Much of the movie will be live action, but Yogi Bear and sidekick Boo Boo will be done in CG animation.

Yogi Bear first appeared as a supporting character in 1958 in another classic cartoon, "The Huckleberry Hound Show." In 1961, he got his own show, which has aired in reruns frequently over the past half-century.

Yogi's exploits take place in Jellystone Park, where he and Boo Boo get into good-natured mischief and must elude their nemesis, Ranger Smith.

Brannon has worked on such Pixar hits as "Toy Story 2" and "A Bug's Life."

Let me guess:

Ranger Smith (to be played by either a sitcom actor trying to break into film or a former A-list comedian trying for a comeback) is a harried single dad, trying to balance his work with family, having brought his citified kids out to Jellystone so they can escape the city.

Soon after arriving, one of the kids gets lost and is rescued by...a wacky talking bear and his softspoken talking bear sidekick, both of whom enlist the kid in their schemes to steal "pick a nick" baskets from unsuspecting tourists. (Yogi will be voiced by Jim Carrey [assuming they didn't get him to play Ranger Smith, in which case it'll be Seth Rogan], Boo Boo by Steve Carrell).

However, it turns out that Yogi and BooBoo are forced to steal because their food supply is dwindling because of pollution. To make matters worse, Jellystone is going to be sold off by Republican politicians (I'm thinking Tom Arnold and random old guy who looks like Dick Cheney) to greeeedy developers (Brian Doyle Murray and Jon Cryer) who want to pave that particular paradise and turn it into a parking lot.

After an hour or two of futile attempts to foil Yogi's exploits, Ranger Smith, having met a beautiful environmentalist (insert generic up and coming sitcom actress), realizes that Jellystone is in danger. At which point, he teams up with Yogi and BooBoo to thwart the developers (who have kidnapped his kids) and save the forest....all while learning valuable lessons about life, family and love.

Roll the credits, while the Jonas Brothers sing a hip-hop mashup of "Rocky Mountain High."

You just have such good, wholesome San Francisco Values ideas, G-Man. Much better than my ideas of doing a snuff film and calling it a religious piece.

Eric Brevig is picking up Yogi Bear's pic-a-nic basket.

The director has come on to helm Warner Bros.' feature take on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, which will be produced as a 3-D project.

The WMA-repped Brevig, a longtime visual effects supervisor whose credits include "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Men in Black," directed Warners and Walden's "Journey to the Center of the Earth," a 3-D pic that earned more than $230 million worldwide in the summer.

Ash Brannon, who directed "Surf's Up" for Columbia, was attached to helm "Yogi" when it was a 2-D vehicle.

Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, who executive produced "That '70s Show," are penning the screenplay for "Yogi," which will offer a new take on the half-century-old title character and his sidekick Boo Boo, who get into a series of misadventures in Jellystone Park.

The movie is expected to combine live action and CG in the manner of "Alvin and the Chipmunks," a hit for Fox in 2007.

Donald De Line and Karen Rosenfelt are producing "Yogi," with Jon Berg overseeing for Warners.

3-D has become a higher priority at many studios, with execs believing that the technology will compel more filmgoers to see movies in theaters. Disney's "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" opens Friday to high expectations.

Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake are circling Warner Bros.' upcoming live-action/CG hybrid adaptation of Yogi Bear. HR reports the three actors are in negotiations to topline the film being directed by Eric Brevig based on script by Brad Copeland and Joshua Sternin. Donald De Line and Karen Rosenfelt will produce, with Warner Bros. Pictures hoping to get "Yogi" under way in New Zealand sometime in December.

Faris will play a nature documentarian who follows the antics of a bear in fictional Jellystone Park. Aykroyd will voice Yogi, and Timberlake could end up lending his pipes for Yogi's constant companion, Boo Boo.

IMDB.com:
  • A documentary filmmaker travels to Jellystone Park to shoot a project and soon crosses paths with Yogi Bear, his sidekick Boo-Boo, and Ranger Smith...Jellystone Park has been losing business, so greedy Mayor Brown decides to shut it down and sell the land. That means families will no longer be able to experience the natural beauty of the outdoors -- and, even worse, Yogi and Boo Boo will be tossed out of the only home they've ever known. Faced with his biggest challenge ever, Yogi must prove that he really is "smarter than the average bear" as he and Boo Boo join forces with their old nemesis Ranger Smith to find a way to save Jellystone Park from closing forever.

'Yogi Bear' Among 2010's Top 10 Eco-Films: A goofy blend of live action and computer animation, “Yogi Bear” has the iconic Hanna-Barbera character doing not only what he does best (scheming to steal picnic baskets) but also trying to protect Jellystone Park from becoming a logging site.
