That's the part I'm having trouble with. He is technically an indigo lantern (see logo on forehead/rank patches on outfit). They can channel the power of the various other lanterns so long as there is one in the general area. I've just gotten the spoilers so far so I haven't heard much on how he was able to channel the black lantern energy, just that he did it.
