When did Bronson Pinchot have long, blond hair?

We have another big name being attached to Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman installment out of Warner Bros. Pictures. With Kevin Costner already set to become his adoptive father, Pa Kent, Variety has confirmed that Russell Crowe is also jumping aboard the fast-tracking production to become the new Jor-El, previously played by Marlon Brando in the previous films.

Both Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. executives have said this is not a reboot or a remake of Donner's films (or an origin tale) so how the re-casting of Jor-El and General Zod (Michael Shannon) plays into the story is something to be revealed later when more plot details come to the surface.

Crowe joins the previously confirmed stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon and Antje Traue. With production scheduled to begin sometime next month, Snyder is at the helm based on a screenplay by David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan. Christopher Nolan is overseeing as a producer alongside Charles Roven, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder.

Man of Steel flies into theaters December 2012.

So, I guess the rebooted origin has Jor-El go on a bender around Krypton throwing phones at people until the whole planet is destroyed.

Nearly ten days after reports surfaced that Russell Crowe was reportedly set to play Jor-El, the father of Superman in Zack Snyder's upcoming installment of Man of Steel, Deadline has revealed that Julia Ormond may be boarding the production as the superhero's mother. The Legends of the Fall actress has reportedly been offered the role of Lara, Kal-El's birth mother from Krypton. His Earth-born parents have been already set with Diane Lane and Kevin Costner set as the Kents.

If Ormond and Crowe sign on the dotted line (both are still in discussions), they will join Henry Cavill (Superman), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod) and Antje Traue (Faora).

With a release set for December 2012, director Zack Snyder is expected to begin production shortly, based on a screenplay by David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan. Batman franchise rebooter Christopher Nolan is overseeing the development as a producer.

Actor Christopher Meloni is trading a badge for a general ranking. Just a few weeks after Meloni said goodbye to "Law & Order: SVU" by exiting his long-running role as Detective Elliot Stabler, Deadline reported that he was the latest to board Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. It started out as an "unspecified" role but once speculation created a firestorm of fan activity, suggesting he could become Lex Luthor, the actor cleared the air by telling NY Mag's Vulture column that he was set to become a general.

"When Vulture caught up with the now ex–Law & Order: SVU star at the Public Theater Gala earlier this week, he told us he'd be instead playing a general in the movie. But when we pressed for more information about the role, he said, "I can't tell you, or I'd have to kill you." We did manage to learn that he starts filming at the end of August and he'll shoot his part over the course of five months in locations including Chicago, Vancouver, and Edwards Air Force Base."
