the 8 year gap also helps tie the nolan films a bit more to reality, since DKR will hit theaters about the same span of time after BB did. the characters and plot points can almost be detailed to have aged in real time. aka, no need to explain why everyone looks 8 years older when only 3 weeks (or whatever silly movie time) had passed between plots.
