It was long time ago, but it's funny how music can bring something back to you like it happened only yesterday.

Black & White Town - Doves

The guys in Doves have been around for a long time. In the early 1990s they were a group called Sub Sub and collaborated with Melanie Williams on an utterly fantastic, 'my man's done me wrong', disco-funk number titled: Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use).

A few years later when their career was in the doldrums, their studio burned down and they began again from scratch. Doves are a more maudlin proposition than Sub Sub but they've always had a love of northern soul that shows through in their music.

Black & White Town starts off with a stomping drum beat and piano riff straight out of Heatwave by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas. There’s a massively life affirming bit at the end of the chorus where the guitar just hangs before Jimi Goodwin steps up to sing the final line. The song sounds like it’s been recorded in a garage - It's played and sung from the heart.
