According to the folks over at ToonZone, the US air date for Justice League Unlimited is August 7th . . .

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED UPDATE

The Justice League animated series is going to get bigger very quickly. Before the opening theme of the season opener of Justice League Unlimited, viewers will be treated to more than 60 heroes.

"We've got a heckuva lot more characters, pretty much a full roster of DC heroes," director Joaquim Dos Santos told The Continuum last weekend at Wizard World Los Angeles. "It's pretty much going to be bigger and badder. It's going to be huge.

"The opening teaser a huge shot of the interior of the Watchtower and it's literally just packed with every character you can imagine. I know it's going to be a pause-fest going on, where people are picking out heroes."

Dos Santos, who shares directing duties with Dan Riba, said he's already worked on five episodes for the upcoming seaosn.

While he can't reveal too many details, he did tell The Continuum how the new season will work.

"They've done away with the two-part format. It's just 30-minute episodes," he said. "The way it works out there's a core group, and they'll take a team of two or three other heroes on an adventure with them. There's basically a team leader and then the new guys on the team, the rookies.

"Other than that, there's no real format. It can kind of go anyway in wants."

Dos Santos directed the season opener, "Initiation." He said that Green Arrow figures prominently in the episode and that Supergirl and Captain Atom also play key roles.

"From the get-go, there's huge consequences," he said. "People will be taken out of the game. Stuff will matter. When a character's injured, he's injured. He's out for a while."

What was his reaction when he heard about the new approach to the series?

"I flipped out," he said. "I didn't think they were able to pull it off. Just logistically for a production coordinator to handle 60 characters from the get-go, it's a huge undertaking.

"Not should it be more fun for the viewers, but for us, too. I think it keeps it interesting because we're not just handling the same characters every episode. For us it's fun ... one show will be Captain Atom with Supergirl and Green Atom and another show will be Superman with Hawk or whomever."

Dos Santos said to look for a new Watchtower and Javelin. The director also said all systems are go for an August launch of Justice League Unlimited. "We just got some early footage back and it's looking really nice," he said.

I'm really not wild about this. The only reason I watch the Justcie League is due to the lack of BTAS and for Wonder Woman. Adding more bodies to the JL orgy just kinda cheapens it.

And really, the whole point of the show is to have FAMILIAR heroes.

Also.... I feel so sorry for Bruce Timm and his definite eventual carpul tunnel syndrome.

I didn't like this idea until I heard from Timm that there's actually an overall story arc to it. Now, I am all for it.

Never really cared for the Justice League. The stories were uninteresting and the characterization was forced(way too PC). Like a desperate attempt at compensating for Superfriends.

Oh? How much will you give me?

Making Jon Stewart as the Green Lantern to have black representation, then portraying him the biggest badass and the most experienced guy on the team.

Depowering Superman to the point where a tazer knocks him out. I know Superfriends was really just Superman(and his worthless friends), but c'mon.....

The Flash is a forensics specialist working with the police(that's what I'm remembering, at least), but like an idiot in nearly every encounter with a bad guy he charges ahead and is dispatched easily by a backhand or a force field or something.

JUSTICE LEAGUE ANIMATED UPDATE

The Atom will be appearing in the upcoming Justice League Unlimited animated series, courtesy of two veteran comics writers.

"Atom's going to be great," story editor Dwayne McDuffie told The Continuum. "Warren Ellis wrote the first Atom episode."

"He gave him an intersting personality," story editor Stan Berkowitz added. "And then J.M. DeMatteis did the second one, and built on that personality."

In other Justice League news:

* Justice League Unlimited will launch on Aug. 7 on Cartoon Network.

* Andrew Kreisberg wrote an episode involving Booster Gold.

"The concept was Rosenkrantz & Guildenstern," Berkowitz told The Continuum. "With all this big stuff going on, here's a guy who's involved in a small part of it and not very happy about his lot in life."

* The entire main voice cast returns for the third season, including Kevin Conroy at Batman, George Newbern as Superman, Michael Rosenbaum as Flash, Phil LaMarr as Green Lantern, Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman, Maria Canals as Hawkgirl and Carl Lumbly as Martian Manhunter.

Appearing twice is "prominently featured"?

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED UPDATE

Bruce Timm, producer of Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited animated series, told The Continuum that the show's second episode will be an adaptation of the Alan Moore story, "For The Man Who Has Everything."

"That actually came about when we were sittng down plotting the season, it came up in the conversation that in the first two seasons we never did a show that involved just the big three," Timm said. "And we were like, 'Yeah, I guess we should rectify that situation.'

"And it was Dwayne (McDuffie, story editor) who said that the best big three story of all time was 'For The Man Who Has Everything.' And we said, 'OK, let's go that.'"

Timm said he talked to Moore about doing the episode.

"I wasn't going to do the show if he wasn't comfortable with us doing it," Timm said. "And he said, 'Oh yes, I would be honored if you would adapt that for your show.'

"So that was great. And hopefully, he'll still feel that way once the show's done. I think he'll like it."

Eric Roberts returns to do the voice of Mongul in the episode, which, along with the season opener "Initiation," has returned from overseas animation.
