JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED UPDATE

Saturday's airing of the "Starcrossed" Justice League movie on Cartoon Network gave viewers their first glimpse of Justice League Unlimited with a short promo during the final credits.

The images appear to be from "Initiation," which opens the season on Saturday, Aug. 7.

The episode, as well as the preview, features Supergirl, Green Arrow and Captain Atom.

"Supergirl's great," said Paul Dini during The Continuum's recent roundtable interviews with Justice League creators. "I saw the first episode. She's the kid of the group. Everything she does on screen reminds you that here's the energetic kid hero, trying to earn her wings."

The promo showed the much-discussed scene in the Watchtower with literally dozens of DC heroes.

The huge number of heroes won't be a pattern, though. Most episodes will focus on much small groups.

"Truthfully, some episodes of Justice League in the previous seasons were harder because we were trying to juggle seven," story editor Stan Berkowitz told The Continuum. "In the new season, seldom are there seven major heroes in one episode.

"How could you give their due to seven characters in half an hour? Or more than that? That would be impossible."

I thought they were doing it just fine. Plus, the hour format was cooler.

Wow, Ed Asner does Granny Goodness? I didn't know that. I knew about the others, but Asner doing the voice sounds right, now that I think of it.

So Kevin Conroy will do Batman on the Justice League but some new guy will do Batman on his own show? Pfah!

Now that was a good show. Too bad it got all wierd for the final episode. And too bad they decided to end the show. I considered it on par with the original Batman: TAS (before the move to WB, when they chose to stop running the old episodes).

Spoiler

This wierd thing where Maddam Web sent Peter to save an alternate reality with the help other Spider-Men from other realities. One was an actor who had no powers, who played Spider-Man, in our world. He wanted to help. After Peter saved the day, he had a talk with Stan Lee, and then he went with Maddam Web to begin his quest to find the real Marry Jane. And that's how it ended.

The whole thing with the fake Marry Jane, and then Peter losing her, that wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. Thing is, it would have been nice if he would have found MJ in the end, or at least gotten some kind of clue, or something. Instead we got a storry that had no real relevance to anything that ever happened.

In other words, I found the finally to be a let down.

JUSTICE LEAGUE ANIMATED UPDATE

Dennis Farina is providing the voice of Wildcat for Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited animated series.

"We had a good-sized list for Wildcat, and Dennis Farina was at the top," producer Bruce Timm told The Continuum. "And he was the first guy who said, 'Sure, I'd like to come play.'

"And he worked out great. He was awesome, actually."

Farina is among numerous guest-stars in the series.

"We always wind up with really good choices, I think," Timm said.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED UPDATE

Cartoon Network has relased titles, air dates and synopses for the five episodes of Justice League Unlimited.

Here's how the season is described by the network:

"As the season begins, Superman addresses an awesome assemblage of heroes. He and the rest of the Justice League, which in the past included the Flash, Green Lantern, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl, have come to realize that the universe might be best served by enlarging the group, being more proactive and coordinating more effectively. The group assembles an awesome collection of superheroes and brings them together aboard the Watchtower, the orbiting space station. It's from this perch that Martian Manhunter monitors goings-on across the galaxies and assigns teams of superheroes to tackle problems.

"But it isn't always smooth sailing for the members of the expanded Justice League. Superheroes usually work alone and have powerful, and idiosyncratic, personalities, so conflicts inevitably arise. Like any co-workers, these people don't always agree on the best way to solve a problem. But in the case of the new Justice League, these superheroes are dealing with civil wars, rogue criminals and rampaging monsters, so they must learn to work together.

"The new roster of Justice League Unlimited includes some of the most famous superheroes around, like Green Arrow, Supergirl and Captain Atom. Other members may be a bit more obscure. Hawk & Dove are siblings with a very different take on conflict resolution techniques. B'wana Beast is a jungle man-turned-superhero, a combination of the Bronx and the Bronx Zoo. The Atom is the world's smallest superhero. Booster Gold, a glory-seeking hero from the future, joins the Justice League, as does Zatanna, a beautiful magician and sorceress. While there is a universe filled with new threats, a few classic villains return, including Lex Luthor, Soloman Grundy and Mongul."

Following is a rundown of the first five episodes:

* Saturday, July 31: "Initiation"
A reluctant Green Arrow is asked to join the new Justice League. He, Supergirl and Captain Atom are dispatched on a mission to stop a rampaging nuclear monster in Asia.

* Saturday, Aug. 7: "For the Man Who Has Everything"
Batman and Wonder Woman surprise Superman at the Fortress of Solitude, in order to bring the Man of Steel his birthday present. But when they arrive, he has been immobilized by a special "gift" that Mongul has delivered to him.

* Saturday, Aug. 14: "Hawk and Dove"
Two siblings, one a pacifist and the other more aggressive, join Wonder Woman in a mission to stop a war between two neighbors. It turns out that the escalation of the conflict is all part of Ares' plan to spread misery.

* Saturday, Aug. 21: "Fearful Symmetry"
When Supergirl begins having some very disturbing dreams, she gets help from Green Arrow and The Question to figure out what is happening. It turns out she may not be dreaming after all.

* Saturday, Aug. 28: "Kids' Stuff"
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern are transformed into 8-year-olds in a desperate attempt to save the world from the magic of Mordred.

The links for those promos are on the vertical strip on the far right side of the page.

I'd also suggest going to the Justice League page and downloading the "Comic Book" promo. That's gotta be one of the best looking TV promos I've ever seen. Period.

I can't believe none of you slackers posted about the newest episode . . .

From Comics Continuum...

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED UPDATE

Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons will receive credits in the upcoming Justice League Unlimited episode, "For the Man Who Has Everything."

Moore and Gibbons created the comics story from which the episode is based. The story first appeared in Superman Annual #11 in 1985 and has been reprinted subsequently.

Producer Bruce Timm recently explained how the episode developed.

"That actually came about when we were sittng down plotting the season, it came up in the conversation that in the first two seasons we never did a show that involved just the big three," Timm said. "And we were like, 'Yeah, I guess we should rectify that situation.'

"And it was Dwayne (McDuffie, story editor/producer) who said that the best big three story of all time was 'For the Man Who Has Everything.' And we said, 'OK, let's do that.'"

Timm said he talked to Moore about doing the episode.

"I wasn't going to do the show if he wasn't comfortable with us doing it," Timm said. "And he said, 'Oh yes, I would be honoured if you would adapt that for your show.'

"So that was great. And hopefully, he'll still feel that way once the show's done. I think he'll like it."

The episode features Mongul, who also appeared in the two-part "War World" episode of Justice League. In "For the Man Who Has Everything," Batman and Wonder Woman surprise Superman at the Fortress of Solitude, in order to bring the Man of Steel his birthday present. But when they arrive, he has been immobilized by a special "gift" that Mongul has delivered to him.

"It's a really intense episode," Timm said. "Mongul is definitely more scary than in the episode 'War World.'"

Mongul is again voiced by Eric Roberts, whom Timm said brought to life through an offbeat performance in "War World."

"Honestly, Eric Roberts kind of made us nervous a little bit because he had so many different ideas on how to play this character and we recorded every single one of them,í Timm said on a recent Justice League: Paradise Lost DVD. ìHe's not consistent through the episode -- he doesn't sound like the same guy from the beginning to the end. There are times when he's real suave, and there are other times where he's really brutish, and we thought, 'Man, we don't know if this is going to cut together -- if this is going to make a consistent character -- or what.'

"Fortunately, the storyboard artists really focused in on the acting that he had provided in the vocal tracks and played up all these different facets of his personality in the show. So, when we got the show back, we thought, 'Wow, this is great, this is better than if he was just the mean bad guy.' I mean, he's vain, he's arrogant, he's petty. I think that makes him an interesting character and, fortunately, that's exactly what Eric brought out in his performance."

"For the Man Who Has Everything" is scheduled to air on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. (ET). Look for more Justice League news soon here in The Continuum.

J.M. Dematteis writing the episode was a nice treat.

Can't wait to see what Warren Ellis has to offer.

I can't wait for the Morrisson JLU/The Filth crossover Episode!

Now on to the episode:

The Moore episode IMO was as good as an abridged animated version of his story could get. That's a good thing.

It omitted ALL of the political Jor-El stuff and just stuck to the emotional stuff with Kal-El's son.

My one beef though with the episode was that in the classic 'burn" scene, the voice actor recited the word in that same wimpy Superman voice he always does, thus kind of watering down the intensity Superman was supposed to have been feeling at the time. Someone should have coached him more on the signifigance of that scene IMO.

The animators however more than made up for this in the incredible and violent slugfest they rendered. I'd say that was as violent and intense an episode as I can remember from ANY animated show. Again, that's a good thing.

The omission of Robin and some very very minor changes (no Kandor replica gift) were pretty much negligible and IMO were an improvement. Do we really need a perv Robin comment on WW's costume to make the ep. work? NO.

It would have been nice if we'd have gotten a glimpse of Mongul's "Black Mercy" inspired dream, complete with Warworld and Braniac kneeling before him as in the comic, rather than just the sound effects. But that's just fanboy nitpicking now......

I happened to give a review for the 1st Episode over at the DC boards where I posted that I was less than impressed.
The premeire Episode seemed to rely more on fanboy wish dreams of Animated versions of the ENTIRE DCU (complete with 1 dimensional personalities) more than they relied on good solid storytelling.

This episode made up for it and then some. However, the fact that this 2nd episode is derived from one of the best Superman stories ever told might actually have something to do with it.

So the jury's still out on JLU as far as i'm concerned.

P.S.
Jack in the Box happens to have a Justice League promo right now. So if you guys dig collecting tiny toy miniatures of the JLA, I suggest you get them while you can. I've already got most of them as one store happened to start passing them out earlier than the stat date of their promo.

Saturday, Aug. 14: "Hawk and Dove" 8:30PM Eastern

Two siblings, one a pacifist and the other more aggressive, join Wonder Woman in a mission to stop a war between two neighbors. It turns out that the escalation of the conflict is all part of Ares' plan to spread misery.

I still have the WW toy you requested, what was it? Two years ago? I'll get you Wondy and the rest of the League if you want and give 'em to ya two years from now!

That would be awesome, but only if they used the giant rampaging sperm. Imagine the look on Supergirl's face as it bursts through her torso.

Warren Ellis actually wrote an episode featuring The Atom, you know. I wasn't just being an arse.

I'd be lying if I said the prospect of sperm getting all over the female leaguers didn't pique my interest.
