Man....

I just finished seeing Judgement at Nurmeburg.

I dunno... I wasn't expecting it to be so.... devestating.

I usually associate that kind of realism and relevance to more contemporary fare (such as Schindlers List). But man... I highly recommend this film. It touches on so many topics, many which are relevent to this day such as the nature of patriotism, the ends justifying the means and collective guilt.

The Holoucast footage (real footage) was particulary hard to watch and bear. It's one of those rare times in a film where I was actually brought to tears.

Man, this one is gonna affect me for some time. Right now I feel as spent as when I saw Schilndlers List.

Listen

Quote:

But this trial has shown that under a national crisis, ordinary -- even able and extraordinary -- men can delude themselves into the commission of crimes so vast and heinous that they beggar the imagination. No one who has sat at the trial can ever forget them: Men sterilized because of political belief; a mockery made of friendship and faith; the murder of children. How easily this can happen.

There are those in our own country too who today speak of the "protection of country" -- of "survival." A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient -- to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is "survival as what?" A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult!

Before the people of the world let it now be noted that here, in our decision, this is what we stand for: justice, truth, and the value of a single human being.

The super-duper special edition of Lord Of The Ring: Return Of The King. Great movie. Exhausting. I did notice that, as the movie wore on, I was getting more and more annoyed with Frodo though.

And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.

The Manchurian Candidate with Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep...sucked big time compared to the 60s version I think anyways!

I-Robot was good but I liked the movie, "Luther" MUCH better!!!! Really awesomely well done!

Agreed.

My biggest gripe with the film was the tacked on happy ending. WTF??!

It reeked of test audience manipulation. Can't leave the theatre too disturbed now can we?

Vertigo...amazing movie. I always wondered, though, how different the movie would've been (and how Jimmy Stewart's career would've changed) if the suits hadn't forced Hitchcock to change the original ending.

I'm a big Hitchcock fan...I watched Rope last night on TCM. Another great movie.

The fact that TCM was showing old Hitchcock movies last night was what initially inspired me to go out and rent Vertigo and Rear Window... as they've been on my 'to see' list for a while. Can't wait to sit down and watch them!

I had a similar jones the other month so I bought Rear Window, Vertigo, The Birds, Psycho and North By Northwest.

I'll rate them.

Vertigo (best) * * * *
Rear Window (2nd) * * * 1/2
Psycho (3rd) * * * 1/2
The Birds (4th) * * *
North By Northwest (Last) * *

I was particularly impressed by how good Vertigo was and dissapointed by how surprisingly average North By Northwest was. That compounded with Cary Grant's annoying, very overtly acting, way of talking.... OY!

So your picks are the best picks from Hitch's best known works. Man, that Vertigo is one haunting film.....

Picked up The Goonies yesterday so that went in the DVD player as soon as I got home.

Waiting for a whole batch of DVDs ordered from Amazon at the moment so should have plenty to watch in the next week or so!
