Heh, this is quite humorous to me!
Been waiting for the film Grand Prix to be released on DVD for years.
So long in fact that I couldnt be bothered waiting for a UK release and bought the US version!
Just making ny way through the bonus features, and one of them is all about the race track Brands Hatch, which is my local race track, being only 10-15 mins ride from my house!
The race footage they show in this feature is of last years A1 GP race that I attended!
Basically, although you cant really make out any of the crowds faces or anything, it means I am on this DVD as I was right up the front leaning on the fence!

I just got Leni Riefenstahl's "Olympia" (Berlin Olympics), Tod Browning's "Freaks" (one of us, one of us, ooglogle oogleogle), and Jean-luc Godard's "Weekend" (French because it is too fucked up to be made in America - we would have censored the shit out of it) in the mail just today. I've seen the closing 'dive' sequance of Olympia, the wedding reception dinner scene in Freaks, and the whole of Weekend. I'll be watching all of these before school starts Monday.

The Princess Bride sucks, in my opinion. I was finally convinced to watch it last weekend. I went in with low hopes and ended up still dissappointed.

I watched The Man Who Laughs yesterday. While I'm a fan of silent cinema anyways, this was a very well constructed film. There are lots of tense moments and I really got into the story. Funny (not ha-ha) thing, the woman playing the Dutchess (who's after Veidt's character) is also the main actress in Freaks, the movie I'm gonna watch tonight.
Also, update, I'm retarded and never connected that the movie was based on Victor Hugo's book.

Freaks was rather dissappointing. All the tension and emotional involvement to draw the audiance into the film was hinged on the assumption that the audiance would be horrified by the players' physical and mental abnormalities. The editing had a choppy pace and the dialogue was unbelievable (this last aspect I can excuse as it WAS made shortly after the advent of sound in pictures).

The thing you have to remember about Freaks is that the technology we take for granted wasn't there when this film was made. And the audience was very much horrified by the fact that real freaks were used instead of regular people in make-up. It's a no-brainer that this movie doesn't stand up to more recent films. But for it's time it packs one hell of a wallop to it's audience.
One thing that Browning meant to imply is that the freaks castrated the strong man. I don't care who you are, where you're from, or in what time period you live, that's some nasty scary shit.

No, I understand the social message. That wasn't a problem with the movie. I didn't like the editing cuts, mostly. And I understand that to have also engaged the audiance in other emotions with the film would have been too heavy and alienated the audiance from participating due to its shocking nature, I just find it missing from my standpoint. The lack of character involvement was probably heightened by my watching The Man Who Laughs the day before because that film had such magnificent tension in the characters and plot.
