The Transformers Come Home!
July 22, 2004 - Stax

FilmForce has learned that the live-action feature film version of The Transformers will indeed be a DreamWorks project, which confirms rumors that appeared online earlier this week. DreamWorks Pictures has inked a deal with toy king Hasbro to make The Transformers; Paramount Pictures will handle the foreign rights. Also confirming earlier Web buzz, DreamWorks honcho Steven Spielberg did indeed use his personal relationship with Hasbro founder Alan Hassenfeld to bring The Transformers over to DreamWorks.

Even better, Hasbro and DreamWorks have agreed to get Transformers going very quickly, with a 2006 release date already set!

Furthermore, G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura may become involved with the project in some capacity on behalf of Paramount. Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto are already onboard to produce Transformers. Expect the trades to confirm this report sometime very soon.

IGN FilmForce has been able to sneak a peek at a press release which includes quotes from producers DeSanto and Murphy. "Like X-Men, Transformers offers an amazing mythology with all the elements to create a successful ongoing franchise, iconic characters, global themes, and a world that has never been seen before on screen," said DeSanto. "We hope that this will be the first in a franchise that is embraced by fans and newcomers alike."

"If you go to places which are the pop culture zeitgeist center, places like this week's San Diego Comic-Con, you won't find many that engender as much enthusiasm as Transformers," said Murphy. "I have a message board on my site where most of my projects have several hundred postings from fans – when Transformers recently hit 8000 postings I knew we had something really incredible."

Needless to say, The Transformers are based on the hugely popular Japanese toy line from the 1980s, which spawned a few comic book series and a hit TV show. Cartoon Network is readying another animated Transformers series.

When can you see the movie?
April 18, 2005
- With Michael Bay now onboard to direct the live-action adaptation of The Transformers, when can fans expect to see the big-screen version of the beloved cartoon, comic book and toy franchise?

Considering Bay is currently in post-production on The Island, the soonest filming seems likely to happen is late 2005.

Given that, Transformers has now been slated for a November 17, 2006 release. It had originally been set for a summer 2006 bow.

There's no word yet on who will star in it.

May 25, 2005 - IGN FilmForce caught up with mega-blockbuster director Michael Bay at a special sneak preview for The Island last night. After watching some very cool clips from the new sci-fi summer thriller, Bay spoke today about the making of the film as well as some upcoming projects. We'll have more on The Island in the months leading up to release, but for now, we've got a bit on the director's highly anticipated next project.

After the formal interview, IGN FilmForce cornered Bay for a few questions about everyone's favorite "more than meets the eye" 80's icons, The Transformers, which Bay is developing for a possible next project.

"I mean, I've gotta finish this one first. We're starting to hire people. The thing is, I haven't read a script yet. I've just heard a pitch from the writers. The script's coming in next week."

Bay says it wasn't so much the show that appealed to him, but more the prospect of starting a new family film franchise. "I'm not necessarily a fan of the show, but I love the writer's take on this. I love the whole changing up of the machines. The hook the writers have, I'm really into. I've always wanted to do kind of a big family movie, a franchise piece, so that's why I'm interested in it."

Although Bay was reluctant to 100 percent commit to directing the film, it did sound like he's ready to get to get to work on the film should the script be ready. "It would be my next film, yes."

Earlier in the day, writers of The Island and Transformers, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, also spoke to press about Transformers. "In terms of Transformers, it's the same approach [as The Island]. How do you do giant robots and care? We used to joke that we were calling it Campbell's Soup: The Movie because it was the ultimate product placement. You know, just put the toy up there and what are you gonna do? So we've been very diligent to find what the character story is. How they relate to the story, how they relate to the humans, so it's not just a toy commercial. So I think it's going well."

Agreed. But this movie was doomed the moment they announed the writer, so I don't know how much that matters.

Independence Day for Transformers

Optimus Prime has a prime release date: The Fourth of July.

Transformers, the long-planned, live-action movie based on the robot-morphing cartoon, comic and toy franchise, will roll into theaters July 4, 2007, DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures announced Wednesday. Michael Bay (The Island, The Rock) will direct; Steven Spielberg will executive produce.

Children of the 1980s likely will be champing at the tie-in lunchbox.

"The diehard fans will like it as long as it stays true to Transformers roots and doesn't stray too far from the ideals that we grew up with," Brendan Reilly, co-Webmaster of The Transformers Archive ( www.tfarchive.com ), said in an email interview about the movie announcement. "The casual or un-familar fan will need to see something awesome to win them over, although a 40-foot robot is usually pretty cool." Cool-looking robots who convert themselves into battle tanks and other vehicles in order blow up things real good are at the mechanical heart of the Transformers, the classic tale of good automaton (the Autobots) versus evil automaton (the Decepticons) in a battle for control of Earth. Optimus Prime is the leader of the Autobots; Megatron, the dark lord of the Decepticons. Both Autobots and Decepticons hail from the planet Cybertron. All this backstory and more was revealed in Transformers, the syndicated cartoon series launched in 1984 with the help of toy-maker Hasbro, which simultaneously--and savvily--launched a still-thriving merchandise line.

No less savvy today, the makers of the new Transformers movie have already begun a full-scale offensive. The new official Website ( www.transformers.com ) went up Tuesday. Transformers: Cybertron, the latest animated series, launched this month on Cartoon Network. Burger King cooks up a monthlong action-figure promotion beginning in August. And this weekend in San Diego, on the occasion of Comic-Con International, the geek world's largest annual gawkfest, an 18-wheel truck touting the franchise's considerable wares will be beached in the convention hall.

In theory then, this thing ain't going to be Transformers: The Movie.

Transformers: The Movie was the little-loved 1986 animated feature that gave Optimus Prime, Megatron, et al., their first crack at the silver screen. Much as Fox is planning to right past cinematic wrongs with an all-new, A-list take on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, another 1980s cartoon/toy phenomenon that spawned a cheeseball 1980s film, the new Transformers crew is looking to take its property upscale.

In a message board Monday post on his personal Website ( www.donmurphy.net ), Don Murphy, a Transformers co-executive producer, said Spielberg, DreamWorks and Hasbro are committed to making a film that is no less than "GREAT" (the capital letters are all his).

"It will be GREAT," Murphy continued, "and then we will make sequel after sequel. There is no doubt that this is true."

With excellence promised, the powers that be now need only to lock in actors--none were announced Wednesday--and start cameras rolling. Time, after all, is of the essence. In publicly staking claim to July 4, 2007, DreamWorks and Paramount become the first studios to reserve that holiday date for their own. Currently, the only other release on the 2007 calendar is Spider-Man 3, set for May 4 of that year.

Until Transformers debuts in theaters, and after Comic-Con wraps, its considerable fandom can busy itself with BotCon ( www.transformersclub.com/conventions/frisco/ ), described by organizer Brian Savage as being "like a giant group hug for everyone who enjoys Transformers."

Scheduled for Sept. 22-25 in Frisco, Texas, the latest edition of BotCon--the event is more than 10 years old--is expected to draw as many as 5,000 devotees of the shape-changing robots. "The whole movie announcement just adds more fire and fuel," said Savage, director of Hasbro's official Transformers Collectors Club.

The way Savage sees it, the unlikely secret to the Transformers' success is: Personality. Anyone, he said, can make a transforming robot.

"But guess what? It's not Optimus Prime."

So, has anyone seen the teaser trailer yet?

Due to some of y'all demanding that I watch the original series, I downloaded a few episodes...five random 23 minute clips from what appears to be the first season.

See, I was born in 1984, so while I was always exposed to the merchandise associated with the Transformers, I never actually watched an episode of the cartoon. Kind of like My Little Pony, now that I think about it.

However, I was old enough to fondly remember Beast Wars. Which I liked. Some people I know bitch and moan and compare it to the original series, but whatever. I like animals, and these animals shot at each other with lasers. Maybe it's because I'm a girl, I just can't get exicted about cars beating up other cars. Now, a T-rex versus a gorilla? Little more exciting.

That being said, the older series isn't too bad. Oh, sure it smacks of everything 80s and boyish -- I mean, retro cars (where's KITT?) fighting retro planes (the F-15 is being replaced by the F-22). But I watch the episode where Skyfire buried himself in the snow after leaving the Deceptacons to help the Autobots -- and I was really touched. But it's something I can watch sober -- as opposed to some of that 60s Batman and Justice Friends stuff, which I only watch when drunk.

So, in between now and movie, I'd like to watch more of the series -- and maybe even the movie, though I already know who dies. (Although maybe the Transformers people are like comic-book people -- no one really 'dies'.)

The only problem I saw the cartoon is that they are too many damn robots running around the place. I only know two or three robots from either side, and the rest I only know by color. There's just too many.

I'm pretty optimistic about the movie. I'm sure you can update everyone (although I have no clue how they would change the one Decepticon with the casette tapes). They could cut the size of each group down to five or eight members.

Oh, and by the way, fifteen minutes into the first episdoe I decide Starscream is flippin' awesome. "Megatron, you idiot!" That takes balls.

I remember seeing an add for the premiere in TV guide. I watched every episode when it first came out. It was my favorite show as a kid.

He's rumored to be an I-Pod in the movie, which sounds really gay. They should be trying to cater to fans of the original cartoon and play up the nastalgia angle. I think they are making a couple other changes as well, Bumblebee is now a Camaro (I think).

The teaser was...interesting. It basically tells you nothing. It does make it look as though it will be a big, serious sci-fi movie and not a "cartoon" movie.

Okay, so I now know what the hell you guys are talking about.

First of all, it was good to that I could recognize my only childhood memory of the show -- the end of the second episode, where Optimus Prime is rolling down the mountain. I have a clear image of watching that scene with my sister back in our first house in Florida. Suddenly I have this urge to get my Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony stuff out again.

Now, at first, I thought the idea of those energon cubes was a little...pathetic. I mean, how the hell do you make these little cubes glow by pouring gasoline or sticking them with electric wires? I also recalled that Megatron went after 'the largest source of energy on Earth' about seven times. And I'm still not sure how a tidal wave can improve dam output. But Megatron was pretty into making lots of waves.

But then I watched Miami Vice and Nightrider this weekend, and it occured to me that I was judging Transformers with my 21st century mind. Miami Vice has such award-winning dialouge like "You've got to be cold to get in there, and you're not even cool. You're red hot." Suddenly, Megatron going after three identical-looking dams didn't seem so bad after all. My older sister is an 80s nut, my kid brother hates it, and I'm pretty much in a middle.

But seriously, there are too many damn robots! Bumblebee is cute. I thought the VW Beetle thing was kind of pansy but it grew on me. But there's two other Autobots about his size and they don't do anything but take up screen time. And the Dinobots? Despite the fact that I loved dinosaurs as a kid, I really don't like these guys. And the Decepticon's countruction robots? Just as bad. I mean...seriously...they just smash stuff. I lost brain cells watching any of there episodes. I want to hurt Grimlock. I'm not quite sure which one he is, but I'm coming at him with a flame torch. No more Dinobots, please.

I hate you.

Oh, and I don't like Megatron turning into a gun. Besides the fact that a tank would be so much cooler (and someone showed me a pic of a Megatron tank, so I guess it's been done), but having Starscream hold his pistol to shoot just has way to many sexual references.

The same thing we do every night...try to take over the world!

Now for the good stuff. The robots whose names I can remember -- Megatron, Optimus Prime, Starscream, Bumblebee, Soundwave, etc etc -- I like. I think in general, the bad guys tend to have a little more personality than the good guys, but I also have a villian complex and tend to have a slight bias.

If you are going to rebel against your leader, make your shots count. Don't shoot him, and then miss. Your leader will be pissed. Your leader will probably come after you, and he's going to bring an ass-whippin' with him. Although that did lead to my favorite scene in the whole season. "Plase...Megatron...please..don't shoot me...you wouldn't shoot me."

I can also understand the whole 'Optimus Prime rocks and should be president' stuff. He's pretty damn cool. They didn't make him a perfect prick of a leader and I thought that was pretty impressive for a kids show. (Side note: you can write in who you want for Student Body President at UF. Chuck Norris won the write-in last semester, but I was always impressed how well Optimus Prime did.)

So...now I'm downloading the movie. I read somewhere that it takes place between the second and third seasons, but the second season looked huge and I've got other stuff to do.

Oh, and apparently Hasbro released some 10th anniversary Beast Wars stuff. And while I dislike the old-school dinobots, Dinobot himself was a pretty cool badass.

Need proof he's a badass? He. Ate. His. Own. Clone.

Oh, and for more humor:

It takes place between seasons 2 & 3, so you should download and watch season 2 first. And season 3 has my favorite Starscream moment ever.

It tends to put you immediately at a disadvantage and IMO is a sign of true weakness.

Well, I cleared a whole bunch of space on my hard drive, so I can download the second season. This ought to be interesting.

Approved by the Department of Defense? Those guys must have Optimus Prime in the basement where they keep the Ark.

The approval thing is sort of interesting -- from what I gather from the first season, the Autobots are usually commercial vehicles, while the bad guys are military jets.

Okay, so I watch the first half of the second season and then watched the movie. I don't think I'll have time to watch the second half of the season before I left for Key West tomorrow, which is why I watched it last night.

So, I really liked the second season. Proof? I kind of like the Dinobots now. I mean, they have a combined IQ of 3, but Grimlock (bless his heart) is at least trying. "Shut up! Grimlock learning finesse!" And the whole Dinobot Island thing was so cool. Untill the cowboys and wooly mammoths showed up. That part was strange.

Oh, and the episode with the female Ninja created by the Japanese scientist? Priceless. I'm beginning to think maybe Starscream and Megatron did have something special. I mean, Starscream was so jealous Megatron was fawning over the new fembot.

"Nightwing will burn out before we get the *thingamabob*"
"She'll burn out when I tell her to." (Megatron WTF?!?!)
"She's not so hot."
"She's hot enough to replace you!"

Ah. Now the whole gun thing starts to make sense.

Starscream is still my all-time favorite. The episode where they go back in time? Pricless. The bird-crap collection was pretty funny. "Megatron! Aren't you glad to see me? Haven't you missed us?"

All in all, the second season was even better than the first. Hopefully I can watch the second half of the season when I get back from the beach.

Now, onto the movie. What the hell. I hate you all.

Okay, I knew Optimus Prime dies in the movie. However, I assumed that he would be the only main one killed. Whoops. I really liked the red van with the redneck twang, and then Megatron kills him and the ambulance. I mean, their freakin bodies are burning! What the hell! And then Megatron shoot the red car point-blank...*sniff* who let their kids see this movie!

Okay, so pretty much, everyone that I liked from the TV show DIED. And then, I got the impression that maybe Optimus died in the end of the movie, in some sort of self-sacrifice to defeat Megatron or Unicron.

Wrong again.

Holy cow. The fight scene was awesome, and it was good to see Optimus and Megatron bash the shit out of each other. And the death scene was really moving. What scared the shit out of me was the way he turned black and just collapsed into dust. Yeah. Good thing I didn't see this as a kid.

Ah, Starscream. I'm a little bummed by how he died, but I loved how he kicked Megatron when he was down and threw him into space. Little ambitious bastard. And the corination? HAHAHA! "Megatron?" Bam. Boom. No more Starscream. I mean, just the fact that he recognized his old boss was kind of creepy.

Oh, and Unicron. I like that dude, despite the fact that he didn't say "Rosebud" even once. He didn't take any shit from Megatron. That was awesome.

Okay, this is where I got really confused. Why the hell create Galvintron? And why the hell did he start sounding like Spock all of a sudden? Spock is a nice guy. He can't be evil. So, basically, I will refer to this new guy as Megatron 2.0.

Oh, and they got rid of the robot insects. Thank God. I didn't like those guys at all.

Oh, and I also didn't get the point of Eric Idle's robot. I didn't get him at all. If anyone can explain him or Megatron 2.0, please do.

Let's see...I really liked the new robots, and the whole ending with Hot Rod (that was his name, right?) getting the...big...shiny...I know Optimus called it something....big spark thingie...was pretty cool. Nice little comeback. And then the 80s rock music starts blaring in the background...nice...

All in all, I can't believe anyone under 11 could watch this. It would leave so many emotional scars. That, and Spike said "shit". And yes, I bitched and moaned about this acid trip of a movie...but is there some sort of 20th Anniversary DVD coming out? Because I think I'll buy it in a heartbeat. I really liked that movie in some...weird...way.

And now I really have to get the third season. I really need to see Optimus and Starscream come back for more ass-kicking.
