Some minor news in my neck of the woods:
1) Alan Embree has been designated for assignment. Buh-bye. I liked him but I can't deny that he's been atrocious this season.
2) We traded RP Scott Cassidy (lousy appearances while called up) to San Diego for back-up OF Adam Hyzdu. I liked Hyzdu last year. I was sad to see him get traded this year. But, in light of our signing Gabe Kapler (Yay!), and our desire to see what Rule 5 draftee Adam Stern has to offer, this deal makes ZERO sense.
3) We acquired IF Tony Graffanino (and a player to be named later) for two minor leaguers. This should improve us at second base. Chances are, Mark Bellhorn isn't long for this team. Which is a shame. I love listening to my brother's hate-filled rants about Bellhorn...

every relief pitcher was tired or being saved (in the case of gordon). franklin was, sadly, the only one really available.
and, truth be told, it was only one really unfortunate pitch. he did well (enough) for the first two outs.

the trade deadline was actually very, very weak. i was suprised by the lack of moves.
i knew the whole "is manny going?!" storyline was bullshit, and it was clearly made more important because of the weak deadline news, but...
i really did think soriano was getting moved somewhere. woulda been nice to have him back in new york (... as a centerfielder?)

On Saturday night, when we discovered that Manny had been pulled in the last minute, me and my friends went ape-shit believing that he'd been traded. When Terry Francona had his post-game press conference, we were certain - his story didn't REMOTELY match up with what we knew were facts! But then we noticed that both Cameron and Huff had played for their teams. And we read about the problems with the deal. By Sunday, we were too engrossed with Jon Papelbon's solid spot-start to care. I'm glad Manny didn't get traded. I would've been fine if he had, provided we got value for him, but I'm happier we didn't.
The lack of moves at the trade deadline didn't surprise me. With so many teams still looking at some form of contention, nothing huge will be done until August anyways. I was positive that Soriano was gonna go, though I couldn't figure out to whom. Yankees? Soriano doesn't want to switch postitions (and I thought they'd get Juan Pierre, if anyone). Twins? Not with their payroll.

I agree. Word around the campfire is that Timlin didn't want to be the closer, so they decided on Schilling because they thought closing would build his arm strength without causing too much stress on his ankle. I say whatever - bring up one of our young studs for set-up and then use Timlin and Myers as co-closers, like they did with Lee Smith and Jeff Reardon back in the day.

schilling, especially a hurt schilling, isn't built to be a reliever. its a whole different ball game, its not just "pitching later."
middle/long relief is much more curt's style. one of your starting 5 gives up four runs in the first three innings? bam, curty can hold'em to two additional runs, or less, until the 7th. thats priceless and shouldn't have been so passed over.

y'know...
to take a lesson from my bosox lesson, i really hope when all the "big guns" return to the yanks' rotation, they dont get their starting jobs back, and instead, hop their way into long relief.
thats if they return.
but comparing the performances of johnson, pavano, wright, and brown vs wang, chacon, small, and even leiter ... thats like a 70 million dollar difference for no discernable reason.
i'd rather the "hot hand" get played.
