If Ralph Nader doesn't stop dropping the N-bomb, Al Sharpton is going to wash out his mouth with soap.
"Nader is not a racist by any stretch of the imagination," Sharpton told me yesterday. "He has a good track record. But he ought to be sensitive that he does not sanitize that word."
Speaking Wednesday night at a Washington fund-raiser to retire the debt from his 2004 presidential campaign, Nader complained that Democratic Party powerbrokers had kept him off the ballot in such Southern states as Georgia and Virginia - which reminded him of the oppressive Jim Crow laws that denied African-Americans equal rights.
"I felt like a [n-word]," remarked the 70-year-old white multimillionaire graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School.
Washington gadfly Evan Gahr reported Nader's comments on his chimpstein.com Web site.
"If Ed Koch had said what Ralph Nader said, we'd be marching," Sharpton noted. "This [scolding] doesn't rise to the level of a march. It rises to the level of a wrist slap."
Yesterday, Nader told me he was using the word in the same spirit as the Black Panthers of the 1960s - "as a word of defiance."
But Sharpton retorted: "He's not a Black Panther."
Democratic operative Harold Ickes - a former civil rights activist who lost a kidney in 1965 after being beaten to a pulp by white racists in Tallulah, La. - was also troubled by Nader's use of the epithet.
"It's not something that I would say," Ickes told me yesterday. "Having grown up in the 1950s and 1960s, I think it's not a word that whites can use.
"It's unfortunate and he may regret it."

I find it interesting that Sharpton essentially admits that he picks and chooses which politicians get a "pass" on these things.

I like Al Sharpton alot. Sharpton voiced his dipleasure, and made it clear it was not acceptable. Nader used poor judgement......period. It's a word that should not be used .......especially not from a politician. Poor Form.

My concern is that he admits he would not if it was a politician he didnt "like," say, Ed Koch.

I, too, like AL Sharpton. He's a charismatic, consistant, and caring man. If he ran for President, I would vote for him.
I think after using that word, Nader can kiss whatever few votes he used to get during his feeble attempts at the White House goodbye.
The Black Panthers could use that word in public. They are black. It was used in conjunction with making a statement about how blacks are often percieved and treated in a prejudice America.
Nader said that word in public. He is white. He made a statement, too.
That he is an asshole.

Except for those "isolated incidents" of stealing campaign funds, orchestrating the "Tawana Brawley" hoax and leading marchers in choruses of "Blood Sucking Jews" and "Jew Bastards," that is.
As noted above, I think Sharpton was right in his comments to Nader. Too bad he doesn't practice what he preaches towards Jews, however.
Also, I am surprised that Nader even did this. You would think someone with his history would not have ever made these statements. I wonder if he isn't starting to lose it.

In 1995, Sharpton marched besides picketers protesting a Jewish-owned business in Harlem as they shouted "blood-sucking Jews" and "Jew bastards." That little exercise in brotherhood resulted in eight deaths, when a protester rushed into the store and started shooting employees.
I looked that up from G - Man's previous post in here.
I did not know that, and the other things about Al Sharpton.
It was still wrong for Nader to use the N word.
And Sharpton is wrong..for lots of stuff.
I would vote for a Black president.... If he didn't do or say bad things.
Oh wait! That gets rid of EVERY Politician. Oh well.

I'm not sure how saying "Sharpton acted appropriately here" but wishing he'd act/or had acted equally appropriately in other situations is somehow indicative of some refusal to hear the other side.
